Book Atlas of Human Hemopoietic Development

Download or read book Atlas of Human Hemopoietic Development written by E. Kelemen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 20 years, celJ biology has made immense strides which have completely transformed the time-honored morphological hematology of yesterday. This progress is primarily due to the introduction of new techniques which allow functional rather than anatomic studies: labeling techniques have made possible the study of celJ kinetics from birth to death of a celJ: culture techniques (both in vivo and in vitro) have made it possible to establish the progeny of certain stern celJs, their growth poten tiaL and the mechanisms of their regulation. The results have been so impressive and have so aroused the enthusiasm 01' young hematologists that it has become fashionable in so me quarters to consider the microscope an "extinct instrument" and morphology littlc more than an outmoded (if agreeable) pastime of little scientific interest. One of the consequences is the wish of some investigators to study cytology without the aid of their eyes. The present book makes us realize once more that morphology is the science of structure and shape and that its aim is not to colJect pictures but to understand them. It is true that microscopic observation, even when made with the electron microscope, cannot by itself answer some basic questions of celJ biology. However, the hematologist who uses only a single technique is like a person who would describe the world from the point of view of a single sensory organ and would refuse the aid of the others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a Pageburst digital textbook; Ideal for identifying cells at the microscope, this atlas covers the basics of hematologic morphology, including examination of the peripheral blood smear, basic maturation of the blood cell lines, and discussions of a variety of clinical disorders. Over 400 photographs, schematic diagrams, and electron micrographs illustrate hematology from normal cell maturation to the development of various pathologies. Numerous illustrations include excellent schematic diagrams, photomicrographs, and electron micrographs. Introductory chapters succinctly describe the peripheral blood smear, its preparation and examination, and hematopoiesis in general. Coverage of cellular maturation includes schematics that illustrate the maturation of each cell line individually and highlight the cell in question. Descriptions for each cell type include size, reference intervals, and nuclear and cytoplasmic characteristics. Body Fluids chapter covers the other fluids found in the body besides blood, using images from cytocentrifuged specimens. White blood cell differential table shows cells found in a normal white blood cell differential. Overview of hematopoiesis includes a schematic drawing along with a detailed presentation of each cell, demonstrating the relationship between individual stages of hematopoiesis and the overall development scheme. Morphologic abnormalities are presented in chapters on erythrocytes and leukocytes, along with a schematic description of each cell, to provide correlations to various disease states. Coverage of common cytochemical stains, along with a summary chart for interpretation, aids in classifying malignant and benign leukoproliferative disorders. Spiral binding and a compact size make this book easy to use in a laboratory setting. NEW Normal Newborn Peripheral Blood Morphology chapter covers the normal cells found in neonatal blood. More examples of specific cells and disorders allow you to compare abnormal cells to each other and to normal cells, differentiating those that are similar. Download or read book Atlas of Clinical Hematology written by Herbert Begemann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hematology, the study of the blood and its disorders, has existed as a science for about one hundred years. During that period it has remained true to its goals. Despite many advances in the submicroscopic and biochemical realm, hematology has clung to its basic postulate that the majority of blood disorders are expressed in morphologically distinct cell changes. Even modern hematology relies largely on the morphologic examination of cells, and the microscope con tinues to be its main diagnostic tool. Today we may describe hematology as the only morphologically oriented clinical science. It owes its existence chiefly to the development of staining methods which make it possible to assign mor phologic structures to specific cellular functions and thus to specific pathologic states. The first step in this direction was the brilliant discovery of panoptic stains in the early part of this century by Pappenheim, Wright, and others. This was followed in the 1950s and 1960s by the development of numerous cytochemical procedures for the differentiation of diverse biochemical reactions and cell types. In the last decade, immunologic methods have been employed to identify cell type-specific antigens as a means of classifying lymphoid and other cells more precisely and more objectively. This has aided in the differentia tion of many important hematologic diseases. In this fourth edition of the Atlas of Clinical Hematology, we have attempted to update the text and bring it in line with recent developments.
