Book Report of the Symposium on Stock Enhancement in the Management of Freshwater Fisheries

Download or read book Report of the Symposium on Stock Enhancement in the Management of Freshwater Fisheries written by European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission and published by Conran Octopus. This book was released on 1982 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symposium on stock enhancement discussed two aspects of management of freshwater fisheries by manipulation of stocks. The first of these was stocking with native species and it was concluded that there is a general paucity of information on the success and failure of current stocking practices in most species. The second aspect was the introduction of species exotic to the European national faunas. Here, the risks of such introductions were discussed and it was recommended that the formulation of a Code of Practice to reduce the risk of such adverse effects should be undertaken.

Book Initial Results of an Atlantic Salmon River Acid Mitigation Program

Download or read book Initial Results of an Atlantic Salmon River Acid Mitigation Program written by Edmund A. Halfyard and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acid precipitation negatively affects Atlantic salmon and other aquatic organisms. As stream acidity has not decreased concurrently with decreasing industrial emissions, immediate mitigation initiatives are required for the persistence of some salmon populations. The West River, Sheet Harbour Acid Mitigation project was designed to treat the once prolific salmon river. A monitoring program was conducted over 2.5 years to assess the early impacts of lime additions to the downstream aquatic communities. While signs of salmon recovery are assumed to require at minimum 3.5 years, preliminary signs of recovery were shown in stream chemistry and aquatic invertebrate communities. Acidity levels were reduced to those conducive to successful juvenile Atlantic salmon survival. Downstream aquatic invertebrate communities increased in abundance and realized shifts in relative dominance of some taxa, with the resurgence of those presumably the most acid sensitive.

Book Acidification Status of Rivers in Several Regions of Nova Scotia and Potential Impacts on Atlantic Salmon

Download or read book Acidification Status of Rivers in Several Regions of Nova Scotia and Potential Impacts on Atlantic Salmon written by Gilles Lucien Lacroix and published by St. Andrews, N.B. : Fisheries and Oceans Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of pH variation throughout eight river systems in three regions of Nova Scotia was completed to evaluate the potential impacts on Atlantic salmon. Sampling at 428 sites on seven occasions during a one year period provided a high level of resolution in pH distribution within each system and throughout the year,'Rivers were either chronically acidic (near minimum pH at all times) or episodically acidic (minimum pH from November to March). Low pH episodes followed increased rainfall, and they were usually correlated with increased dissolved organic carbon concentrations with some regional exceptions where low pH episodes were not correlated with the flushing of organic acids. Minimum pH was 5.0 in 80-90% of sites in five of the river systems indicating that they had little habitat where salmon would survive acid episodes. Minimum pH was 5.0-5.5 in 30-40% of sites and 5.5 in about 4540% of sites in the three other systems which were considered to be responsible for much of the salmon production within the regions surveyed. However, minimum pH during acid episodes was low enough to limit salmon survival In at least 35-50% of sites in the three least affected systems. The survey indicated that a high degree of both spatial and temporal resolution in pH distribution in a river is required to accurately assess potential acidification impacts on salmon populations

Book The Atlantic Salmon in the History of North America

Download or read book The Atlantic Salmon in the History of North America written by R. W. Dunfield and published by Fisheries and Oceans, Scientific Information and Publications Branch. This book was released on 1985 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) has occupied a salient position in the history of eastern North America for at least the past 1000 years. Initially the species occupied a prominant niche in the prolific web of life that existed throughout its former occurrence area; millions of pounds of salmon were produced annually from the freshwater streams between New York and Ungava - a resource that was a principal food source for the Amerindian cultures which shared its range. In a chronological and cumulative way, the salmon became an increasingly important factor in both the domestic and commercial life of the developing colonies; it provided a recreational outlet for the sportsman, and evolved as a principal object of intellectual and scientific investigation. The documented specifics of the salmon's history, however, are largely comprised of repetitive instances of overexploitation, careless destruction of stocks and their environment, and ineffectual conservation actions. Despite the species' former importance, its more recent history is one of declining presence, and its destiny appears to be extinction. By documenting this story of discovery, exploitation, and decline, the urgent need for the employment of sound resource management practices to preserve the salmon is emphasized. Appendix A: Historical methods of packing salmon.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen separate rivers on the Northumberland Strait shore of Nova Scotia support Atlantic salmon stocks. Stock status information for 1999 is provided for eight of those stocks based on the conservation requirements and escapements calculated either from a mark-and-recapture experiment (River Philip), capture (exploitation) rates in the angling fishery, or a count of fish by snorkel divers (Sutherlands River). Additional information is included for the three principal rivers in the area. East River, Pictou; River Philip and West River, Antigonish.
