Book The Skies Belong to Us

Download or read book The Skies Belong to Us written by Brendan I. Koerner and published by Crown. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true stroy of the longest-distance hijacking in American history. In an America torn apart by the Vietnam War and the demise of '60s idealism, airplane hijackings were astonishingly routine. Over a five-year period starting in 1968, the desperate and disillusioned seized commercial jets nearly once a week, using guns, bombs, and jars of acid. Some hijackers wished to escape to foreign lands; others aimed to swap hostages for sacks of cash. Their criminal exploits mesmerized the country, never more so than when shattered Army veteran Roger Holder and mischievous party girl Cathy Kerkow managred to comandeer Western Airlines Flight 701 and flee across an ocean with a half-million dollars in ransom—a heist that remains the longest-distance hijacking in American history. More than just an enthralling story about a spectacular crime and its bittersweet, decades-long aftermath, The Skies Belong to Us is also a psychological portrait of America at its most turbulent and a testament to the madness that can grip a nation when politics fail.

Book excerpt: Working in cities from Liverpool and Glasgow to Paris and New York, the interventionist artist transforms ordinary urban spaces, disrupting everyday life in ways that reinvent the way we encounter and experience art and compelling people to act and think differently about the world around them. Providing incisive new insights into the work and life of the artist,Cultural Hijack examines how these artists use the city as a playground, a stage, or an instrument for unsanctioned artworks, informal creative practices, activist interventions, and political actions. Drawing on a series of essays, personal testimonies, and original interviews from artists such as Tatsuro Bashi, BGL, Gelitin, Michael Rakowitz, and Krzysztof Wodiczko, this illuminating work enlarges our understanding of the creative process and how artists are developing new weapons in the arsenal of critical resistance, both emancipating and expanding the spaces of artistic and cultural production.

The challenge repeats itself when humankind is forced to flee the doomed solar system from an incoming danger. In various galactic environments, often hostile, will humankind survive? Will men return to warfare measures against one another as the number of colonies multiply on foreign planets? Will the human race maintain common values despite the growing distance between their frontiers? Will they return to a double-faced justice system to match the color of the day? As foreign civilizations unite, this last volume of The Eden Democratic Kingdom trilogy keeps the door open to another adventure series: The Eden Galactic Confederation.

Book Hijacking and Hostages

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. Paul D. Taillon
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2002-06-30
  • ISBN : 0313012229
  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book Hijacking and Hostages written by J. Paul D. Taillon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-06-30 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorism and its manifestations continue to evolve, becoming deadlier and more menacing. This study considers the evolution of terrorism since 1968 and how airlines and governments have attempted to deal with this form of violence through a series of nonforce strategies. Using historical examples, we see how governments, particularly the United States, attempted to counter politically motivated aerial hijacking with metal detectors, legal means, and, finally, in frustration, counterviolence operations to subdue terrorists. As nations witnessed aerial hijacking and sieges, the requirement for paramilitary and military counterterrorist forces became a necessity. Through use of examples from Israel (Entebbe 1976), West Germany (Mogadishu 1977), and Egypt (Malta 1985), Taillon concludes that cooperation—ranging from shared intelligence to forward base access and observers—can provide significant advantages in dealing with low-intensity operations. He hopes to highlight those key aspects of cooperation at an international level which have, at least in part, been vital to successful counterterrorist operations in the past and, as we witnessed again in the campaign in Afghanistan, are destined to remain so in the future.
