Book excerpt: Quests for cod, herring and other sea fish had profound impacts on medieval Europe. This interdisciplinary book combines history, archaeology and zooarchaeology to discover the chronology, causes and consequences of these fisheries. It crosscuts traditional temporal and geographical boundaries, ranging from the Migration Period through the Middle Ages into early modern times, and from Iceland to Estonia, Arctic Norway to Belgium. It addresses evidence for human impacts on aquatic ecosystems in some instances and for a negligible medieval footprint on superabundant marine species in others (in contrast with industrial fisheries of the 19th-21st centuries). The book explores both incremental and punctuated changes in marine fishing, providing a unique perspective on the rhythm of Europe's environmental, demographic, political and social history. The 20 chapters - by experts in their respective fields - cover a range of regions and methodological approaches, but come together to tell a coherent story of long-term change. Regional differences are clear, yet communities of the North Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic, North and Irish Seas also followed trajectories with many resonances. Ultimately they were linked by a pan-European trade network that turned preserved fish into wine, grain and cloth. At the close of the Middle Ages this nascent global network crossed the Atlantic, but its earlier implications were no less pivotal for those who harvested the sea or profited from its abundance.

Book Separation of Atlantic Herring Clupea Harengus Stocks in the Southern Gulf of St Lawrence Using Digitized Otolith Morphometrics and Discriminant Function Analysis

Download or read book Separation of Atlantic Herring Clupea Harengus Stocks in the Southern Gulf of St Lawrence Using Digitized Otolith Morphometrics and Discriminant Function Analysis written by S. N. Messieh and published by Dartmouth, N.S. : Fisheries and Oceans, Canada. This book was released on 1989 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The identification of Atlantic herring stocks inhabiting both sides of the northern Atlantic has been the subject of numerous investigations for many years. In more recent years, the discreteness of the spring and autumn herring populations in the Gulf of St. Lawrence was established, a separation important for delineating proper fishery management units. Otolith characteristics, such as shape and first year's growth, were used in both the Gulf and Newfoundland regions, but the method used requires well-trained technicians and was criticized because of its subjectivity. A semi-automated microcomputer-based measuring system was developed for otolith measurements in the Gulf region to eliminate such subjectivity. The method uses a microscope with a drawing tube and a digitizer interfaced to a personal computer which analyzes the digitized otolith measurements using software packages. This report presents results using this system to separate herring spawning groups by otolith morphometrics.

Book The Herring Fishery of the Northwest Atlantic

Download or read book The Herring Fishery of the Northwest Atlantic written by Leslie W. Scattergood and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general account of the history of the Northwest Atlantic fishery for herring (Clupea harengus L.) from aboriginal days to the present. The average catch during the last three decades has been 142,000 metric tons annually (313 million lb). About half of the catch is made on the Maine coast and in the Bay of Fundy; the Canadian Atlantic and Gulf of St. Lawrence regions yield almost all of the remainder. The size of the catch seldom reflects the availability of the species in the fishing areas. Expansion of the fishery depends upon increased demand accompanied by a price that will make the fishery profitable. Offshore herring stocks, yet unfished, can be harvested, and new and better types of hear can be developed to yield greater catches.
