Book Dartmouth Athletics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dartmouth Athletics: A Complete History of All Kinds of Sports at the College Readers of this book should keep constantly in mind three facts which have been very stubborn ones at all times that Dartmouth students are somewhat removed from the large centres of activities, and hence have few opportunities for friendly tests and competition; that her facilities for physical culture have been of the hum blest, and that short purses have necessitated close atten tion to remunerative employment; with these factors duly entering into the account, the record must seem to candid judges a very creditable one. Dartmouth has taken its full share of pennants, and when not able to secure the coveted prize, has maintained a prominent and honorable place in the contest, giving her a high average among the New England colleges in the athletic arena. Book Inside Dartmouth Athletics

Book excerpt: The first class I took in the MALS program was Oral History in Theory and Practice. Not only was the genre of oral history new to me, but this was also the first time I had been in a classroom in nearly a decade. Needless to say, I wasn't sure what to expect. To my surprise, I discovered that my natural curiosity to learn about the past through first-hand accounts was ideally suited to the field of oral history, where one tells a story through the words of others. Equally surprising was that Professors Harvey and Myrna Frommer were excited about my role in the athletic department and they encouraged me to explore a final project that related to my career. As a result, I chose to tell the story of the 1970 Dartmouth football team. On the surface, it was a tale about one of the greatest seasons in the history of the College. But I recognized that the story went much deeper than the limited scope I was permitted for a class project and I wanted to learn more. What I found most fascinating was the behind-the-scenes decision making that proved instrumental to the team's success on the field. As an aspiring athletic director, I wanted to further explore the topic and learn more about building a great team, a great department, and a great experience for young men and women. But I wanted to do so at an institution that places tremendous value on the undergraduate education - a seemingly rare combination these days. My thesis explores the idea that it is indeed possible to have both a successful Division I athletic program and high academic standards. Using Dartmouth as an exemplar of this balance, I interviewed coaches, administrators, admissions officers, faculty members and student-athletes and explored both the process of running a program effectively as well as the philosophical underpinning necessary to maintain the proper academic-athletic balance. I hope this work will grant the reader a behind-the-scenes look at the struggles necessary to achieve an ideal that in some respects may be considered a dying notion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps more than any other two colleges, Harvard and Yale gave form to American intercollegiate athletics--a form that was inspired by the Oxford-Cambridge rivalry overseas, and that was imitated by colleges and universities throughout the United States. Focusing on the influence of these prestigious eastern institutions, this fascinating study traces the origins and development of intercollegiate athletics in America from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Smith begins with an historical overview of intercollegiate athletics and details the evolution of individual sports--crew, baseball, track and field, and especially football. Then, skillfully setting various sports events in their broader social and cultural contexts, Smith goes on to discuss many important issues that are still relevant today: student-faculty competition for institutional athletic control; the impact of the professional coach on big-time athletics; the false concept of amateurism in college athletics; and controversies over eligibility rules. He also reveals how the debates over brutality and ethics created the need for a central organizing body, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which still runs college sports today. Sprinkled throughout with spicy sports anecdotes, from the Thanksgiving Day Princeton-Yale football game that drew record crowds in the 1890s to a meeting with President Theodore Roosevelt on football violence, this lively, in-depth investigation will appeal to serious sports buffs as well as to anyone interested in American social and cultural history.

Book Dartmouth College Football

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notre Dame and Nebraska may have their claims, but Dartmouth's football tradition is special, perhaps unrivaled. Football, above all, is an emotional game, and nowhere is that spirit more vibrant, more enduring, more a part of the collegiate experience than in Hanover, New Hampshire. Since 1881, Dartmouth has established its place in the annals of college football, rising to national-championship heights and, during the past half-century, ranking as the Ivy League's most successful program. Dartmouth College Football: Green Fields of Autumn captures the colorful tradition of Dartmouth football. On a campus that President Dwight D. Eisenhower described as "what a college ought to look like," football is at the center of an autumn rite that has left its mark on the game. Dartmouth teams have played in stadiums across the continent, produced Hall of Fame performers, and sent players to the NFL and to the nation's CEO ranks. It is a legacy that continues with each crisp New Hampshire autumn.

Through this reciprocity, small ideas grow into big plans, local efforts have a global impact, and productive managers become great leaders. When you have the tools to generate the combined effort of your team in a unified direction, you develop the power of leading without a title and getting greater results through coordinated efforts.Working in Sync tells the stories of eleven highly successful professionals who learned the principles of connection and teamwork on the Dartmouth class of '86 crew under coach Whit Mitchell. After a twenty-five year team reunion, Whit wanted to find out the secret to their professional success. He conducted months of one-on-one interviews, uncovering outstanding insights on excellence in life and business. These interview produced staggering results. Whit discovered that each of his former rowers had found professional success at a high level. They had each taken very different routes along the way, but they had all been able the reach the height of professional excellence in their various fields. Each rower also credited his success to the basic skills and principles gleaned from his time on Whit's crew.
