Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is to investigate the effect of an athletic injury on Division III athletes' identity and mental health. Division III collegiate athletes from a northeastern conference located in the United States (N= 49) completed an online survey with questions regarding injuries they obtained while playing collegiate athletics, social media usage, NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deal, recovery, mental health, and identity. Six Division III student athletes from a university located in the northeastern United States participated in an in-depth interview regarding injury and the effects on the athletes' physical and psychological health. Quantitative results did not show any statistical significance related to collegiate athletes having a season ending injury versus a non-season ending injury, gender differences in the process of recovery, nor the effect of an NIL deal and social media following on an athletes' recovery. Qualitative results suggest that an injury does affect an athlete's mental health, identity, and performance pressure, yet they can overcome these challenges through a strong support system, determination, and resilience.

Book excerpt: Following their participation in athletics after their collegiate retirement, this research examines whether there is a relationship between college athletes' mental health and their athletic identity. Specifically, it examines whether athletic retirement leads to anxiety and depression. Participants will be asked to answer a survey that relates to their athletic identity, and the occurrence of symptoms related to depression and anxiety at different periods of their collegiate career and after their athletic retirement. Results are predicted to demonstrate a significant relationship between retired athletes' level of athletic identity and the prevalence of depression and anxiety following cessation of athletics. However, this effect is likely to be moderated by their participation in athletic endeavors post-graduation. Future research should explore athletes' identity and their mental health throughout their careers and after retirement.

Book excerpt: "The current study aimed to measure the impact of athletic identity and vocational identity on Division III student-athlete thriving as they prepare to graduate from college and transition into the workforce. There is a paucity of research on this topic for the Division III student-athlete population as well as for research which evaluates positive psychological outcomes in collegiate student-athletes. This study aimed to fill the gap in the current literature on both counts. Quantitave methodology was used to assess 108 collegiate student-athletes from an NCAA mid- Atlantic Division III sport conference. The Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, the Vocational Identity Measure, and the Comprehensive Inventory of Thriving were used were used to evaluate the relationship of athletic identity, vocational, identity and thriving in this population. Data was analyzed using a stepwise regression model which yielded a moderate, significant, and positive relationship between vocational identity and thriving; removing athletic identity from the model all together. Past research also indicated that gender may play a role in student-athlete career maturity such that females tend to have more career maturity than males (Murphy, Petitpas, & Brewer, 1996); and have lower scores of depression and anxiety (Armstrong & Oomen-Early, 2009). Unlike past research, the current study found no significant gender differences across all variables. A reflection on these findings, implications, future research, and study limitations are discussed. " -- Abstract

Book excerpt: "Intercollegiate athletes balance many roles during a vital time of their identity development. Research regarding collegiate level athletic identity has grown in the past thirty years. More specifically, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS; Brewer, Van Raalte, and Linder, 1993) was developed to assess the psychological benefits and risks associated with athletic identity. Much of the previous literature has examined these benefits and risks in Division I student-athletes. The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between athletic identity and well-being in Division III student-athletes, a generally understudied population. An additional aim of the study was to determine if participation in non-athletic activities (campus involvement) positively impacted well-being in Division III student-athletes. The results indicated a significant relationship between athletic identity and well-being. Furthermore, the interaction of campus involvement, athletic identity, and well-being was determined to not be significant. Clinical implications, limitations and strengths to the study, and future directions are discussed. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between athletic identity, sportconfidence and injury. Participants included injured {n = 16) and noninjured (n = 59) collegiate student-athletes. Participants completed a demographics questionnaire, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS; Brewer, Van Raalte, & Linder, 1993), and the Trait Sport-Confidence Inventory (TSCI; Vealey, 1986). Injury information was collected from team athletic trainers. A baseline correlation was conducted to assess the relationship between athletic identity and trait sport-confidence. A moderation analysis of injury was conducted on the relationship between Athletic Identity and Trait Sport- Confidence. No significant linear relationship (r = .07; p > .05) was found between Athletic Identity and Trait Sport- Confidence at pretest; Injury was not a significant moderator (p > .05). Sport psychology consultants and athletic trainers may focus on strengthening sportconfidence for injured athletes as they recover and return to play.

Book excerpt: In the span of five academic years, 23,710 injuries were reported to the National Collegiate Athlete Association (NCAA)-participating schools, and these injuries can be attained with practices, strength training workouts, and/or games. When injuries occur, negative psychological effects can occur, such as anxiety and decreased quality of life (QOL). The primary purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the overall mental wellness of athletes who have had long-time absence injuries in collegiate sports and to evaluate the resiliency response of these athletes. An electronic survey assessing rate of injury among sports, psychological responses to injury and QOL was distributed to athletes at one NCAA Division III school for three weeks in spring 2021. Most participants were white (89.7%), female (55.9%), and 82.3% of all participants experienced injuries during their collegiate career. However, 41.1% reported longterm injuries (more than 4 weeks) that had significant impacts on symptoms of anxiety and depression with 90% indicating moderate to high risk for poor mental wellness and decreased QOL with 31.7% indicating neutral to highly dissatisfied QOL. Many participants reported that the best way to support them during injuries was through the support of athletic trainers. Further research is needed to better understand the psychological impact of long-term injuries on college athletes as well as optimal forms of support for these athletes.

Moreover, an athlete is more likely to have sport transitioning issues if he or she sustains a career ending injury (Heil, 1993). Although this is the case, questions arise examining the coping styles and life impact career ending injuries may have on athletes who play at different levels. Sturm et al., (2011) suggested that the athletic identities of NCAA Division I athletes are similar to those of NCAA Division III athletes. Thus, the purpose of this study is to qualitatively examine and compare the coping strategies and injury impact of NCAA Division I and NCAA Division III athletes who have sustained a career ending injury. Data was transcribed and analyzed; emerging themes were identified as a) emotional response to injury, b) redefining identity, c) adopting a coping strategy, and d) feelings of unpreparedness to cope with transition. NCAA Division I athletes experienced more negative emotions than NCAA Division III athletes. All NCAA athletes adopted coping strategies to cope with the transition out of sport. The majority of the athletes felt unprepared to cope with this transition.

Book excerpt: The number of sports-related injuries that occurs annually in both youth and collegiate athletics is staggering, and the psychological consequences of a sports-related injury can be very crippling. Personality traits have been shown to play a role in recovery from athletic injuries, though the literature on this topic is quite limited. The present study sought to explore the impact of the Big Five personality traits, optimism, and resilience, on sports-related injury, rehabilitation, and recovery. A total of 228 NCAA Division III student athletes (ages 17-23) were recruited, and completed measures of personality, depression, stress, and anxiety during injury, rehabilitation adherence, and questions about their injury recovery. Participants completed a retrospective survey during their pre-season, concerning injuries sustained last season, and a prospective survey after their season ended, inquiring about injuries sustained in the current season. Personality traits, especially optimism, extraversion, and negative emotionality, were found to predict the onset of athletic injury, subjective response to injury, number of missed practices and games, and overall perceived recovery. A relationship between rehabilitation adherence and conscientiousness may also exist. The findings from this study indicate that individual differences in personality may influence how an individual responds physically and psychologically to a sports-related injury. Future research should incorporate the Big Five in the realm of personality and health-related outcomes.

This investigation involved the administration of a self-report survey to 222 student-athletes representing 12 athletic teams at two Midwestern NCAA Division III institutions. Targeted teams for participation included men's and women's teams of the three sports of basketball, ice hockey, and swimming. Results indicated that the expectation of toughness aspect of the sport ethic, which involved willingness to play through pain and willingness to make physical sacrifices for the game, along with attitude toward pain as something to be denied and ignored, negatively influenced athletes' help-seeking tendencies for pains and injuries experienced in sport. An athlete who experiences pain and injury and chooses to ignore or deny its occurrence places himself or herself at risk for experiencing more severe and potentially disabling injury. In addition, significant mean gender differences were found for expectation of toughness and instrumental and emotional social support help-seeking tendencies. Significant mean differences based on sport were found for athletic identification and expectation of toughness. It is clear from this investigation that athletes' expectations of toughness in sport, in particular, negatively influenced athletes' willingness to seek help for pains and injuries. Additional research is warranted to address what can be done to buffer the effects of the sport ethic and promote athletes' willingness to seek help for pains and injuries experienced during participation in sport."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: Athletes have been found to have more negative attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help than non-athletes despite experiencing comparable amounts of mental illness. The purpose of the present study was to examine factors that are associated with athletes help-seeking attitudes, including athletic identity and emotional competence. A sample of 144 college student athletes from a small, private Midwestern college in the United States participated in the study. The athletes competed at the NCAA Division III level. Participants were asked to complete the following measures: Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Short Form, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Self-Stigma of Seeking Help Scale, the Problem Orientation Scale of the Social Problem Solving Inventory for Adolescents, and the Rumination subscale of the Inhibition Rumination Scale. Correlational analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were used to examine the extent to which athletic identity and emotional competence, as measured by alexithymia, problem orientation, and rumination, predicted attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Results revealed that both athletic identity and the emotional competence variables entered as a block predicted unique variance in the athletes attitudes toward seeking help. Among emotional competence variables, alexithymia had a significant negative bivariate relationship with attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help and emerged as worthy of further study. Problem orientation was identified as a significant predictor in the regression models, however, functioned as a suppressor variable and did not have a significant bivariate correlation with attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Findings, implications, and directions for future research are discussed.

The purpose of this book is to accumulate the latest development in psychological analyses, evaluation, and management of sport-related injuries, including traumatic brain injuries. No two traumatic injuries are alike in mechanism, symptoms, or symptoms resolution. There is still no agreement upon psychological diagnosis and there is no known comprehensive treatment for sport-related injuries for regaining pre-injury status. Physical symptoms resolution is not an indication of "psychological trauma" resolution.
