Book An Athletic Director s Story and the Future of College Sports in America

Download or read book An Athletic Director s Story and the Future of College Sports in America written by Robert E. Mulcahy and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Mulcahy’s chronicle of his decade leading Rutgers University athletics is an intriguing story about fulfilling a vision. The goal was to expand pride in intercollegiate athletics. Redirecting a program with clearer direction and strategic purpose brought encouraging results. Advocating for finer coaching and improved facilities, he and Rutgers achieved national honors in Division I sports. Unprecedented alumni interest and support for athletics swelled across the Rutgers community. His words and actions were prominent during a nationally-reported incident involving student athletes. When the Rutgers Women’s Basketball team players were slandered by racist remarks from a popular radio talk show host, Mulcahy met it head on. With the coach and players, he set an inspiring example for defending character and values. Though Mr. Mulcahy left Rutgers in 2009, his memoir reflects continued devotion to intercollegiate athletics and student athletes. His insights for addressing several leading issues confronting Division I sports today offer guidelines for present and future athletic directors to follow.

Book JUNIOR COLLEGE AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE ATHLETIC CAPITALISM AND THE WORK OF ATHLETIC TRAINERS

Download or read book JUNIOR COLLEGE AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE ATHLETIC CAPITALISM AND THE WORK OF ATHLETIC TRAINERS written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reviewed the funding, budgeting, revenue generating practices of community college athletics. Several theories informed the research including institutional theory (isomorphism) academic capitalism, resource dependency, and role/work conflict. The design of the study was to interview an athletic administrator or athletic director, a coach, and an athletic trainer from each of the community colleges in a western state. These interviews occurred on the community college campus to allow for observation of the facilities. In addition, a national sample of athletic trainers from community colleges was interviewed. The study indicates that community college athletics is philosophically resisting the pressure to look and behave like larger collegiate athletic departments. Resistance is not universal however; some community college athletics personnel consider the move toward budget driven decisions and marketing similar to Division I (one) institutions as coming and inevitable. Isomorphism is alive and well among community college institutions. The decisions for spending and growth are not always the decisions, which are best for the institution and its athletes. At times these decisions are made because of mimetic isomorphism. The study indicates that athletic personnel can base decisions in the context of the budget and fund raising practices. These decisions are not yet raised to a critical state where untoward influence on the institution is felt at the community college level. Overall, community college athletic personnel are individuals who care about the student athlete model and believe the role of collegiate athletic is to contribute to the community and the college. I found the athletic personnel to be professional and supportive of athletics from the president to the departments, through the athletic directors, coaches and athletic trainers.

Book excerpt: With the enactment of Assembly Bill 2295 (Chapter 1060, Statutes of 2002), the California Department of Education and the California Postsecondary Education Commission were directed to conduct a study of Title IX compliance in athletics in California?s public high schools, community colleges, and universities. This study found that California public educational institutions, overall, are not fully in compliance with Title IX, especiallywith regard to athletics participation and coaching parity. Based on the findings, this report makes recommendations that generally fall into the following four categories: (1) better data collection; (2) increased technical assistance to districts and schools; (3) improved training for school administrators, athletic directors, and coaches; and (4) additional research regarding specific areas of compliance, particularly coaching.
