Book Reinventing Hippocrates

Download or read book Reinventing Hippocrates written by David Cantor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name of Hippocrates has been invoked as an inspiration of medicine since antiquity, and medical practitioners have turned to Hippocrates for ethical and social standards. While most modern commentators accept that medicine has sometimes fallen short of Hippocratic ideals, these ideals are usually portrayed as having a timeless appeal, departure from which is viewed as an aberration that only a return to Hippocratic values will correct. Recent historical work has begun to question such an image of Hippocrates and his medicine. Instead of examining Hippocratic ideals and values as an unchanging legacy passed to us from antiquity, historians have increasingly come to explore the many different ways in which Hippocrates and his medicine have been constructed and reconstructed over time. Thus scholars have tended to abandon attempts to extract a real Hippocrates from the mass of conflicting opinions about him. Rather, they tend to ask why he was portrayed in particular ways, by particular groups, at particular times. This volume explores the multiple uses, constructions, and meanings of Hippocrates and Hippocratic medicine since the Renaissance, and elucidates the cultural and social circumstances that shaped their development. Recent research has suggested that whilst the process of constructing and reconstructing Hippocrates began during antiquity, it was during the sixteenth century that the modern picture emerged. Many scholastic endeavours today, it is claimed, are attempts to answer Hippocratic questions first posed in the sixteenth century. This book provides an opportunity to begin to evaluate such claims, and to explore their relevance in areas beyond those of classical scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women and Gardens celebrates the achievements of women in gardening and horticultural history. Today, women outnumber men in landscape architecture and related fields. But for centuries, male historians overlooked women's important contributions to horticulture. During her long and distinguished career, feminist historian Susan Groag Bell (1926-2015) published several seminal works on women's place in history and how it had been written out. Upon her death, Bell left behind a fascinating, unfinished project, exploring women's roles as gardeners and founders of horticultural schools. Now, horticultural historian Judith M. Taylor has completed Bell's work. Women and Gardens expands upon Bell's original research and features new material from Taylor-including a full chapter on the accomplishments of women flower breeders and a comprehensive listing of women rose breeders in Australia. In Women and Gardens, Taylor and Bell offer gardening and horticulture enthusiasts an exclusive look into the previously unexplored world of women and gardens. Order your copy today. ----- Praise for Judith M. Taylor's Work "For many years, the distinguished pioneer feminist historian, Susan Groag Bell, was fascinated with women's involvement with gardens, gardeners themselves and also as teachers through the schools they established for other women. Over the years she had worked on this project but hadn't completed it at the time of her death. Now the superb horticultural historian, Judith Taylor, using and expanding Susan's material, has created a joint work devoted to the extremely interesting and important world of women and gardens." - Dr. Peter Stansky, Frances and Charles Field Professor of History, Emeritus, Stanford University "One of the most important studies in garden plant history in English for a long time...for anyone interested in the history of garden plants and plantmanship it is essential reading." - Noel Kingsbury on Taylor's Visions of Loveliness ----- About the Cover The famous early twentieth century artist Childe Hassam painted Celia Thaxter's garden in the Isles of Shoals off the Maine coast in 1896. Thaxter was a noted poet in her day. She ran an hotel on Appledore Island and planted many flowers to decorate the hotel's rooms. Writers and artists spent their summers at the resort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, Scotland and England produced such well-known figures as David Hume, Adam Smith, and John Locke. Ireland’s contribution to this revolution in Western thought has received much less attention. Offering a corrective to the view that Ireland was intellectually stagnant during this period, The Irish Enlightenment considers a range of artists, writers, and philosophers who were full participants in the pan-European experiment that forged the modern world. Michael Brown explores the ideas and innovations percolating in political pamphlets, economic and religious tracts, and literary works. John Toland, Francis Hutcheson, Jonathan Swift, George Berkeley, Edmund Burke, Maria Edgeworth, and other luminaries, he shows, participated in a lively debate about the capacity of humans to create a just society. In a nation recovering from confessional warfare, religious questions loomed large. How should the state be organized to allow contending Christian communities to worship freely? Was the public confession of faith compatible with civil society? In a society shaped by opposing religious beliefs, who is enlightened and who is intolerant? The Irish Enlightenment opened up the possibility of a tolerant society, but it was short-lived. Divisions concerning methodological commitments to empiricism and rationalism resulted in an increasingly antagonistic conflict over questions of religious inclusion. This fracturing of the Irish Enlightenment eventually destroyed the possibility of civilized, rational discussion of confessional differences. By the end of the eighteenth century, Ireland again entered a dark period of civil unrest whose effects were still evident in the late twentieth century.
