The secoCavafy's Historical Poems is the first volume of a four-book set constituting a study of the life and opus of this fascinating poet. The second volume is an anecdotal life detailing Cavafy's home and its atmosphere: the man, the poet, and his lifestyle; the odes of his compatriot partisans; the praises of his foreign admirers; the barbs and insults of his critics and revilers; the poet as a critical ironist; and the last part of his life. More than one hundred commentators are quoted, and just as many of his poems are used where it seemed appropriate. A third volume consists of erratic commentaries containing the author's evaluation and criticism of the main contributions to Cavafy's poetry. That is these of George Seferis, Sir Maurice Bowra, Robert Liddel, Edmund Keeley, Grigorios Xenopoulos, Timos Malanos, Stratis Tsirkas, John Sareyiannis, and others. These follow an opening chapter on Hellenization and a second chapter on the controversial subject of the dates of composition of Cavafy's poems. The fourth volume, The Canon, is a verse translation of the 150 poems Cavafy accepted as his mature opus, including the original Greek verses, accompanied by detailed examination of the poet's craft and style. That is to say the meter, length of verse, wedging, rhyme, enjambment, titles, organization, punctuation, the absences, lyricism, periphrasis, description, narrative, suggestive image, abstractions, transmission, maturity, content, language, irony, intellectuality, etc. nd volume is An Anectodal Life detailing Cavafy's home and its atmosphere: the man, the poet and his lifestyle; the odes of his compatriot partizans; the praises of his foreign admirers; the barbs and insults of his critics and revilers; the poet as a critical ironist, and the last part of his life. Download or read book The Rivals of Aristophanes written by David Harvey and published by Classical Press of Wales. This book was released on 2002-12-31 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of the 'other' comic poets of classical Athens, those who competed with, and in some cases defeated, their (eventually) better-known fellow comedian, Aristophanes, has almost eluded the historical record. The poetry of Cratinus, Phrynichos, Eupolis and the rest has survived only in tantalising, often tiny, fragments and citations. Modern studies in this field have themselves often been difficult of access. Here an exceptional cast of scholars, including most of the leading international authorities, provides a set of 28 interpretative essays to cover every one of these 'other' poets of Athenian Old Comedy for whom significant evidence survives. The work includes a comprehensive bibliography, and is a landmark in the study of Old Comedy.

Book Acquired Taste

    Book Details:
  • Author : T. Sarah Peterson
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN : 9780801430534
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Acquired Taste written by T. Sarah Peterson and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peterson explores a change in French cooking in the mid-seventeenth century - from the heavily sugared, saffroned, and spiced cuisine of the medieval period to a new style based on salt and acid tastes. In the process, she reveals more fully than any previous writer the links between medieval cooking, alchemy, and astrology. Peterson's vivid account traces this newly acquired taste in food to its roots in the wider transformation of seventeenth-century culture which included the Scientific Revolution. She makes the startling - and persuasive - argument that the shift in cooking styles was actually part of a conscious effort by humanist scholars to revive Greek and Roman learning and to chase the occult from European life.
