Book Distribution of Organic Contaminants in Bottom Sediments Peace and Athabasca River Basins 1988 to 1992

Download or read book Distribution of Organic Contaminants in Bottom Sediments Peace and Athabasca River Basins 1988 to 1992 written by Brian G. Brownlee and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents results of contaminant analyses of bottom sediments collected from the Peace and Athabasca river basins 1988-90 and 1992. Contaminant groups represented are the polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, resin acids, chlorophenolic compounds, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Contaminant concentrations were correlated with percent organic carbon of the fine fraction (the fraction on which analysis was performed. Correlations between concentrations of bleached kraft mill related contaminants were also investigated and results are presented.

Book An Assessment of Drinking Water Quality for Alberta Communities in the Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins

Download or read book An Assessment of Drinking Water Quality for Alberta Communities in the Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins written by Dennis Scott Prince and published by The Study. This book was released on 1997 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents results of site visits to 38 water treatment facilities located in the Northern River Basins Study area along the Peace, Athabasca, and Slave rivers. The 38 sites selected for the visits (out of 180 treatment facilities in the area) represent an overall cross-section of the types of facilities found in the area, based on existing data regarding raw water source, treatment process used, size of facility, and treated water quality. Parameters reported include turbidity, microbial contamination, trihalomethane, temperature, pH, conductivity, colour, and ammonia. Plant operating practices, sampling routines, and chemical dosing strategies are also reported.

Book Concentrations of Metallothionein in Fish Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins September to December 1994

Download or read book Concentrations of Metallothionein in Fish Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins September to December 1994 written by J. F. Klaverkamp and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallothioneins are a family of proteins whose synthesis in animal organs and tissues can be induced by exposure to heavy metals. This report describes metallothionein concentrations in fish collected from northern Alberta rivers and tributaries. The analyses incorporate results from examination of kidney, liver, intestine, and gill tissues of burbot, longnose sucker, northern pike, and flathead chub. Results are organised into reference (upstream locations and tributaries receiving no inputs from pulp mills), near-field (within 100 kilometres downstream from a pulp mill), and far-field (over 100 kilometres downstream).

Book Analyses of Dehydroretinol Retinol Retinyl Palmitate and Tocopherol in Fish Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins September to December 1994

Download or read book Analyses of Dehydroretinol Retinol Retinyl Palmitate and Tocopherol in Fish Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins September to December 1994 written by Scott Barrie Brown and published by The Study. This book was released on 1996 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vitamin A (retinoids) and E (tocopherol) have received increasing attention as possible indicators of exposure to a variety of environmental pollutants. This study examines vitamin A and E indices in fish collected from northern Alberta rivers, where fish are exposed to a variety of industrial effluents, as part of a multi-faceted study into altered fish physiological function due to environmental contaminants. The fish species targeted for collection were burbot, northern pike, and longnose sucker. The investigators conducted biochemical analyses in the laboratory to determine levels of retinol, dehydroretinol, retinyl palmitate (three storage forms of vitamin A), beta carotene (precursor form of vitamin A), and tocopherol in fish livers. For comparison, results are organised into reference (upstream locations and tributaries receiving no input from pulp mills), near-field (within 100 kilometres downstream from a pulp mill source), and far-field (over 100 kilometres downstream) groups, where sample sizes were adequate.

Book Assessment of Drinking Water Quality in the Northern River Basins Study Area

Download or read book Assessment of Drinking Water Quality in the Northern River Basins Study Area written by Tanya Faye Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NTBS was designed to address the ecological concerns about pulp mill expansion, and to increase scientific knowledge about environmental conditions [ecology, ecosystem sustainability, water pollution and control, habitat, effect on fish and fishing, etc.] in the major river systems of the north. The study's objectives were to gather and interpret sound scientific information about the basins, develop appropriate recommendations for basin management, and communicate effectively with the public. The government response report confirms the governments' commitment to ecosystem sustainability and to pollution control in northern rivers. First Nations and Metis aboriginal [native] peoples contributed significantly to the NRBS.

Book An Overview of Streamflows and Lake Levels for the Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins

Download or read book An Overview of Streamflows and Lake Levels for the Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins written by James Choles and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a summary of flow and lake level information for water bodies in the Peace, Athabasca, and Slave river basins to provide a hydrologic background for many of the other reports in the Northern River Basins Study series. It examines trends in river flows for both the main stems and significant tributaries; for lake levels, both natural and regulated conditions are examined. Ice processes are also discussed along with some of the environmental effects.

Book Water Resources Use and Management Issues for the Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins

Download or read book Water Resources Use and Management Issues for the Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins written by Michael Williams and published by The Study. This book was released on 1996 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a survey of residents of northern Alberta river basins, respondents were asked to choose the best and worst examples of various sets of threats to water quality/quantity in the basins as well as best and worst examples of possible management actions. This report analyses the responses to the two sets of best/worst questions, using logistic regression. The analysis produced the following estimates: the probability that each of 11 possible threats to water quantity/quality will be selected as the area of most concern; and the probability of each of 11 possible management actions will be selected as the most effective response to such concerns. The probabilities produced by this analysis are ranked to determine the preferences of northern households and various stakeholder groups within the basin.
