Pursuant to the idea of "specific neutrality" and strategic key terms such as "low cost monuments" or "Ikea classicism," Atelier Kempe Thill has continually come up with new solutions that, despite times of upheaval and increasing costs, still manage to recall the legacy of European architecture in a powerful, natural, and innovative way. Today, the office, founded in Rotterdam in 2000 by André Kempe (*1968 in Freiberg) and Oliver Thill (*1971 in Chemnitz), has about fifteen employees. This publication illuminates the architects' distinct approach based on very personal and not always politically correct statements with respect to selected projects from the past twelve years.

ATELIER KEMPE THILL wurde 2000 von den deutschen Architekten André Kempe (*1968) und Oliver Thill (*1971) in Rotterdam gegründet, die auch in Forschung und Lehre tätig sind und aktuell eine Professur an der Leibniz Universität Hannover innehaben. Angefangen mit kollektivem Wohnungsbau und kleinen Aufträgen für öffentliche Gebäude hat sich das Portfolio des Büros um große Renovierungs-, Infrastruktur- und Stadtplanungsprojekte erweitert. Shanghai-based Atelier Deshaus, founded in 2001 as one of the first private architectural firms in China, is also one of the country's most distinguished and innovative design studios. The firm made its name worldwide in 2014 with the much-acclaimed West Bund site for Shanghai's Long Museum, which has since been followed by a series of further museum and other art-related projects. Such cultural and community buildings of various scales are the main focus of Atelier Deshaus, who deliberately eschew the usual commercial construction tasks in China. Their strong buildings are developed from reading the sites with special attention paid to the preservation of Shanghai's industrial heritage after decades of a tabula rasa policy in the city's urban development. At the core of this book are Atelier Deshaus's twenty most important designs from 2001 to 2020.
