Book excerpt: Reaction to Stanley Harts previous stories and novels: he is unquestionably one of our finest story tellers. Harts characters come vividly alive. Harriet Shapiro, devoted cousin on Harts mothers side. Stan is the authors authors author. I love his work. Truly imaginative. Jonas Aarons, long time friend with questionable taste. What a masterful writer I cant put his books down.. Victoria Ryvkin, Harts daughter and mother of the cutest girl in the world. His books should be required reading for all ages. Stanley Hart, author. Stanley who? I never heard of him, Rodger Strauss, president, Ferrar, Strauss, Giroux The less said about Stanley Hart, the better. He atones for being a poor speller by being a natty dresser. If you chance to meet him, give him a warm Hello and say something nice. He is very sensitive the only trait he shares with Marcel Proust. Twilight Time is Harts third volume of short stories. With any luck, there wont be a fourth.

Anna Cameron is a new Sergeant in the Flexi Unit. On her first day in the new job she discovers she'll be working with her ex, Jamie. In at the deep end emotionally, she's also plunged headlong into the violent underworld of Glasgow's notorious Drag - the haunt of working girls, drug dealers and sad, seedy men. Cath Worth, Jamie's wife, watches jealously from the sidelines, having given up police work to raise their child. Anna's life could have been hers; hers could have been Anna's. When Cath attempts to get involved in a situation she is no longer equipped or entitled to tackle, the consequences for both women could be far-reaching.. Atmospheric, affecting and beautifully written, THE TWILIGHT TIME is a stunning crime debut from a remarkably talented new writer. Praise for Karen Campbell 'Gritty as all hell, shot through with black humour and with enough pace and atmosphere to give the likes of Denise Mina a run for their money. All this and the chutzpah to create a seedy and unpleasant superintendent named Rankin!' font size="+1">Mark Billingham/font 'The plot is wonderful, the characterisation of a family in crisis is both sharp and sympathetic, and the author does not shy away from examining the less palatable aspects of relations between the police and the public' Guardian 'I loved it . . . Anna is a great, original character and Karen Campbell has a great way with images' Kate Atkinson 'Karen Campbell deserves to be admitted to membership of what's becoming a very large club - Scottish crime writers of excellence . . . As to be expected from a former police officer, Campbell portrays her milieu with harsh authenticity, and Anna Cameron is wholly believable in her unheroic role. Glasgow and its citizens are described with vivid passion' The Times

Book excerpt: Their young carefree days are over, but they've shaped Crista and Maggs' lives... The Devonshire village of Ford is full of excitement and curiosity at the arrival of their new doctor, the dashing young Scotsman, Jamie Murray. Among the fluttering female hearts are sisters Maggs and Crista Fletcher. And though Maggs frequents the local pub, the Angel, in the hope of a chance meeting with the young doctor, it is Crista to whom Jamie has taken a shine. Not that Maggs is exactly drinking on her own. Her admirers include Dickie Trippett, her childhood sweetheart, now scarred for life in the First World War, and handsome, confident and rich Rupert Swain, son and heir to the local paper mill. For Maggs, there is no contest as to where her affections lie: Rupert wins hands down. Except that Rupert is a member of the most hated family in Ford: the Swains run the paper mill in the most ruthless and cruel fashion, paying the lowest rates in dangerous working conditions. And just as Maggs cannot reveal the object of her love, Rupert wouldn't dream of doing so either. As far as he's concerned, she is just another village girl to be loved and left.

Book excerpt: Laiel Brockade is a broodling of Hell, one of the children of the Devil, and a master of black magic. Hearing rumors of the discovery of the scroll of Abaddon, the Destroying Angel, a magical artifact whose purpose is to summon said bringer of the biblical Apocalypse to the earth, Laiel sets out to gain possession of it. He is soon joined by allies such as a gang of ruthless biker outlaws and a vampire, and with enemies arrayed against him at every turn such as witches, cultists, warlocks, and monsters of every stripe, as well as his own siblings, among them the Antichrist, himself. Determined to gain control of the scroll, and increasingly desperate, the various forces involved use every power of magic at their disposal to defeat and destroy one another. Treachery, deception, and murder abound as every villain and monster (un)imaginable arise from behind every shadow and out from under every bed to fight for dominance. As the body count rises, and the destruction mounts to epic proportions, the question becomes: How many battles can be fought, how many must die, and how much of the earth must lie in ruins before we acknowledge that a magical war has begun?

Book excerpt: Insect Photoperiodism reviews the many aspects of photoperiodism, particularly in insects, emphasizing the concepts that serve to place the subject in a meaningful relationship to the whole of modern biology. Photoperiodism is the study of the adaptive mechanisms by which living systems exploit this source of temporal information. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins by discussing the relationships between an endogenous behavioral rhythm and the exogenous photoperiod. Aside from behavioral activities, it also shows that some observable developmental events tend to occur at species-typical times of the day and to be photoperiodically regulated. Notably, photoperiod may exert either or both of two regulatory effects on insect development: growth rate effects or polymorphism. Furthermore, the characteristics of some of the principal physiological rhythms that have been studied; role of photoperiod in the control of diapauses; and the circadian functions and theoretical nature of biological clock are explored in this book.
