They are in a short-lived but important stage of stellar evolution, characterized by pulsations, dust formation, and the production of expanding circumstellar shells. This conference highlighted the physics of evolved cool stars in relation to their stage of evolution, atmospheric structure and dynamics, stellar winds, and associated dust formation. The conference was held at the Millennium Centre near the campus of East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee, in July 2007. It brought together astronomers, both professional and amateur, who are working on different aspects of cool star research. These included dust theorists, numerical modelers, and experts in observations at different wavelengths. The result of the meeting was a more complete picture of these stars, which is summarized in this volume. Several recent developments motivated the need for this conference. Current hydrodynamic models of evolved stars are now able to reproduce the optical/UV spectra of such stars. However, simultaneous modeling of the infrared spectrum has proven difficult. Also, adding dust to such modeling is problematic because of the complicated physics of dust formation, destruction, and emission in these dynamic environments. Furthermore, the exact evolutionary relationship between the various types of cool evolved stars still is uncertain. The perceptive reader will discover a number of provocative research directions embedded in the many fine contributions herein.

Book excerpt: "In the spring of 2006 a four day international workshop was held in Lunteren, The Netherlands, in honor of the formal retirement of Prof. Henny Lamers. These proceedings provide a comprehensive overview of mass loss in massive stars and of the dynamical fate of clusters. The dynamical evolution of clusters is affected by stellar winds, mass loss outbursts and supernova explosions as well as by the loss of stars in dynamical interactions, thus linking the two central themes of the workshop. It is becoming clear that mass loss by radiation pressure on spectral lines is not only at work in normal O, B, and A stars but also in Luminous Blue Variables and Wolf-Rayet stars. The importance of these line-driven winds relative to outbursts in the Luminous Blue Variable phase of evolution is under debate. A central issue in this discussion is the importance of small and possibly large scale structure in stellar winds and its implications for the measured mass loss rates. These proceedings report on progress establishing wind properties, on theoretical predictions of mass loss and wind structure as a function of stellar properties, and on the effects of mass loss on the evolution of massive stars. As a result of dynamical interactions, clusters may dissolve completely over time. Observational studies of cluster dissolution timescales as a function of cluster formation history and cluster and environmental properties, are at the focus of cluster studies in the last decade. A key topic discussed in this book is whether the old globular clusters we observe today were once similar to present-day massive young clusters. The mass function of the two types of clusters is observed to be different. Is this a result of dynamical evoltuion or were the mass functions different at formation? The 12 invited reviews, 18 contributed talks, 48 poster papers, and two discussion sessions combine to provide and in-depth assessment of both observational and theoretical issues. This conference was the third in a series of international colloquia on this topic. The first one took place in Mysore, India in 1985, and the second one a decade alter, 1995 in Bamberg, Germany. Twelve years later it was considered useful to gather again to discuss the progress and the future directions in this field. At the conference 68 participants from 20 countries presented 25 invited talks, 27 contributed talks, and 16 posters. Hydrogen-deficiency is exhibited by many evolved high-and low-mass stars. Therefore research on hydrogen-deficient stars is quite diverse since such stars are found in almost every region of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. The stellar classes discussed in detail at the conference were: R Coronae Borealis stars, extreme helium stars, Wolf-Rayet central stars of planetary nebulae, PG 1159 stars and related objects, white dwarfs of spectral type DO, DB, and DQ, and helium-rich subdwarf O and B stars. Also highlighted were hydrogen-deficient stars in close binary systems (AM Cvn and ultracompact low-mass X-ray binaries), massive Wolf-Rayet Stars and their relation to Type I supernovae and Gamma-ray bursts. The GMRT has been in operation for close to a decade. Early results have been reported from LOFAR. The next generation of telescopes such as the LWA, MWA, MeerKAT, ASKAP and SKA should provide exciting challenges, results, and opportunities. To discuss recent results and astrophysical problems as well as a range of technical issues at low radio frequencies, a conference and workshop was held at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. This event commemorated the birth centenary of Dr. Homi J. Bhabha, who contributed immensely in both the sciences and the arts. There were approximately 130 participants from over a dozen countries. The conference brought together experts with a wide range of interests from major observatories and institutions across the world as well as younger research workers largely from within India. There were over 100 papers presented, including several extensive reviews, on a large variety of topics including low-frequency surveys and cosmology, extragalactic neutral hydrogen and OH, extragalactic radio sources, clusters of galaxies, our Galaxy, pulsars, transients and high-energy sources, Sun and planetary studies, and instrumentation and techniques. The book provides an overview of research at low radio frequencies and should be of interest to a wide spectrum of students and researchers.
