Book At the Corner of Guilt and Delight

Download or read book At the Corner of Guilt and Delight written by Jeffrey L. Carrier and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It isn't easy growing up in the Bible Belt of East Tennessee when you start having same-sex fantasies as a child, especially when your father is a preacher who thinks that homosexuality is a sin. Moments of pleasure and the torment of guilt intersect in this memoir by Jeffrey L. Carrier. He relates the exploration of his nature and his effort to make sense of his feelings, taking us along on his journey of acceptance. Beginning with his childhood in the 1960s, he introduces us to the many people he meets along the way, including his grandmothers, an aunt with a refreshingly open mind, two strong southern women who taught the boy some important life lessons and a kind and nurturing professor’s wife in Michigan. He presents his father as a man of contrasts, a beloved pastor devoted to his profession whose priorities shift when his wife dies and he quickly remarries. The joy and pain of loving another man for the first time while attending a Baptist college climaxes with a suicide attempt. We follow Jeffrey’s journey as he leaves the hills of Tennessee for the skyscrapers of Manhattan. There he finally comes to terms with his sexuality and takes his first steps into an openly gay lifestyle, the AIDS crisis of the 1980s looming large in the background. His life takes another turn when he meets silent film star Patsy Ruth Miller. Trying to reclaim lost fame by penning her memoirs, she introduces him to a life of old-Hollywood glamour. Other highlights include a life-changing experience in Northern Michigan, working at a hectic advertising agency, and discovering faded gay love letters in the basement of a Brooklyn brownstone. By turns romantic, heart-wrenching and sentimental, the book offers something for anyone seeking more understanding of the challenges facing the LGBTQ community.

Book The Book of Rumi

Download or read book The Book of Rumi written by Rumi and published by Hampton Roads Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Pullman, author of 'His Dark Materials' trilogy, has remarked that "after nourishment, shelter, and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world." This new collection of Rumi stories fills that need. This fresh prose translation of 105 short teaching stories by Rumi, which form the core of the six-volume Masnavi, explores the hidden spiritual aspects of everyday experience. Rumi transforms the seemingly mundane events of daily life into profound Sufi teaching moments. These prose gems open the mystical portal to the world of the ancient mystic. These stories include well-known and popular tales such as "Angel of Death," "The Sufi and His Cheating Wife," "Moses and the Shepherd," "Chickpeas," and "The Greek and Chinese Painters" as well as the less commonly quoted parables: "The Basket Weaver," "The Mud Eater," and "A Sackful of Pebbles." Rumi's voice alternates between playful and authoritative, whether he is telling stories of ordinary lives or inviting the discerning reader to higher levels of introspection and attainment of transcendent values. Mafi's translations delicately reflect the nuances of Rumi's poetry while retaining the positive tone of all of Rumi's writings, as well as the sense of suspense and drama that mark the essence of the Masnavi.

Book Confessions of a Kept Man

Download or read book Confessions of a Kept Man written by Jeffrey L. Carrier and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-07-26 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An 80-year-old woman who was once a famous movie star entices a 20-year-old newspaper reporter to help in the writing of her memoir, gradually enfolding him within a web of control and manipulation. If it sounds like Sunset Boulevard, there are indeed similarities in this fascinating true story. Patsy Ruth Miller was a silent movie star, best known as Esmeralda in the 1923 silent classic, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, opposite Lon Chaney. Jeffrey L. Carrier was a 20-year-old college student and part-time news reporter who fell under her spell. Beginning in 1984, It took four years to complete the book, and Carrier writes about that fascinating experience in clear and engaging prose as he describes happy days and heated conversations, a feeling of giddy delight and almost unbearable stress, sometimes enjoying being pampered and sometimes being rigidly controlled. It was often an uncomfortable experience, making him feel like a “kept man,” and he made his escape when the book was finished. Dramatic moments (the sudden death of her husband, a serious angina attack) are juxtaposed with moments of pathos (Miss Miller’s touching admission that she felt forgotten by Hollywood), making it a book that offers something to savor on every page. Patsy Ruth Miller’s memoir was published in 1988 and has been delighting fans of silent films ever since. This book pulls back the curtain to reveal how that book was created and describe how two people – one an old and faded star and one a young and naïve reporter -- formed a very unusual friendship.

Book excerpt: All of us sometimes feel as if we’re spinning our wheels without going anywhere, that life is a constant struggle, and that our only objective is to avoid falling over and knocking down everyone in our path. Faced with these issues, it’s easy to live in fear and exhaustion. But it takes only the presence of God to give us peace, take away fear, and cause us to do what is right. He truly is our only audience. In Audience of One, author Trisha Dahlheimer shares the story of her journey of faith with candor and vulnerability. She recounts her struggles and misconceptions regarding who she thought Jesus was and what she believed a relationship with Him should look like. Using biblical illustrations and context, she recalls the process she went through as she made Jesus her one and only audience. Through her story, she hopes others carefully evaluate the voices they listen to in their lives and realize that God is the one who is listening to and delighted by your life. This biblical study and personal narrative offers one woman’s testimony, recalling her walk of faith as she discovered that God is the only audience in her life that matters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Instant New York Times Bestseller! A BuzzFeed Best Young Adult Book of 2020 Perfect for fans of The Last Magician and Serpent & Dove, this heart-stopping debut is an imaginative Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920s Shanghai, with rival gangs and a monster in the depths of the Huangpu River. The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery. A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang—a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal. But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mae Murray (1885--1965), popularly known as "the girl with the bee-stung lips," was a fiery presence in silent-era Hollywood. Renowned for her classic beauty and charismatic presence, she rocketed to stardom as a dancer in the Ziegfeld Follies, moving across the country to star in her first film, To Have and to Hold, in 1916. An instant hit with audiences, Murray soon became one of the most famous names in Tinseltown. However, Murray's moment in the spotlight was fleeting. The introduction of talkies, a string of failed marriages, a serious career blunder, and a number of bitter legal battles left the former star in a state of poverty and mental instability that she would never overcome. In this intriguing biography, Michael G. Ankerich traces Murray's career from the footlights of Broadway to the klieg lights of Hollywood, recounting her impressive body of work on the stage and screen and charting her rapid ascent to fame and decline into obscurity. Featuring exclusive interviews with Murray's only son, Daniel, and with actor George Hamilton, whom the actress closely befriended at the end of her life, Ankerich restores this important figure in early film to the limelight.

Book excerpt: Absence is as crucial as presence. The decision to stop dating has made Vaughn Hargrave’s life infinitely simpler: he has friends, an excellent wardrobe, and a job in the industry he loves. That’s all he really needs, especially since sex isn’t his forte anyway and no one else seems interested in a purely romantic connection. But when a piece is stolen from his art gallery and insurance investigator Jonah Sondern shows up, Vaughn finds himself struggling with that decision. Jonah wants his men like his coffee: hot, intense, and daily. But Vaughn seems to be the one gay guy in Toronto who doesn’t do hookups, which is all Jonah can offer. No way can Jonah give Vaughn what he really wants, not when Jonah barely understands what love is. When another painting goes missing, tension ramps up both on and off the clock. Vaughn and Jonah find themselves grappling not just with stolen art, but with their own differences. Because a guy who wants nothing but romance and a guy who wants nothing but sex will never work—right? Not unless they find a way to fill in the spaces between them.
