Book Sacred Music Piano Study Series

Download or read book Sacred Music Piano Study Series written by Brenda A. McGee and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-08-08 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This piano book, for beginners from children to adults, is the first in a series of piano study books. This series is to teach the student hymns and African-American spirituals. It will cover sight-reading and later will help to incorporate the musical knowledge for playing chordally, or by ear. This book is for Christians and non-Christians alike. Those who are not yet Christians may hopefully be led to the knowledge or further knowledge of Jesus Christ through the teachings of Sacred Music. Brenda A. McGee has over forty-five years of teaching piano as well as music composition experience. She graduated from Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and the school of Performing Arts in New York City; Mercy College/Westchester Conservatory of Music in Dobbs Ferry, New York; and the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, California. While a graduate student at CalArts, Ms. McGee created the piano program at the Watts Towers Arts Center, which is still functioning today with one of her former students as one of the piano instructors. Ms. McGee states, “I pray that this book, and all the other piano books in this series be a launching pad for those piano students whom God may purpose for future church musicians and worship leaders in the Christian Church worldwide, part of the body of Christ. This first book is a small beginning, but an extremely important beginning for a young child. “For the adults that are starting with this first book, you may not have started early in childhood, but it is never too late to start learning hymns for piano, as it is never too late to come to Christ.” “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee.” Psalm 63:1a KJV

Book John Cage s Concert for Piano and Orchestra

Download or read book John Cage s Concert for Piano and Orchestra written by Martin Iddon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Cage's Concert for Piano and Orchestra is one of the seminal works of the second half of the twentieth century, and the centerpiece of the middle period of Cage's output. It is a culmination of Cage's work up to that point, incorporating notation techniques he had spent the past decade developing - techniques which remain radical to this day. But despite Cage's vitality to the musical development of the twentieth century, and the Concert's centrality to his career, the work is still rarely performed and even more rarely examined in detail. In this volume, Martin Iddon and Philip Thomas provide a rich and critical examination of this enormously significant piece, tracing its many contexts and influences - particularly Schoenberg, jazz, and Cage's own compositional practice - through a wide and previously untapped range of archival sources. Iddon and Thomas explain the Concert through a reading of its many histories, especially in performance - from the legendary performer disobedience and audience disorder of its 1958 New York premiere to a no less disastrous European premiere later the same year. They also highlight the importance of the piano soloist who premiered the piece, David Tudor, and its use alongside choreographer Merce Cunningham's Antic Meet. A careful examination of an apparently bewildering piece, the book explores the critical response to the Concert's performances, re-interrogates the mythology surrounding it, and finally turns to the music itself, in all its component parts, to see what it truly asks of performers and listeners.

Book The Mechanical Muse The Piano Pianism and Piano Music c 1760 1850

Download or read book The Mechanical Muse The Piano Pianism and Piano Music c 1760 1850 written by Derek Carew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the piano's accession from musical curiosity to cultural icon, examining the instrument itself in its various guises as well as the music written for it. Both the piano and piano music were very much the product of the intellectual, cultural and social environments of the period and both were subject to many influences, directly and indirectly. These included character (individualism), the vernacular ('folk/popular') and creativity (improvisation), all of which are discussed generally and with respect to the music itself. Derek Carew surveys the most important pianistic genres of the period (variations, rondos, and so on), showing how these changed from their received forms into vehicles of Romantic expressiveness. The piano is also looked at in its role as an accompanying instrument. The Mechanical Muse will be of interest to anyone who loves the piano or the period, from the non-specialist to the music postgraduate.

Book Music City and the Roma under Communism

Download or read book Music City and the Roma under Communism written by Anna G. Piotrowska and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the role of Romani musical presence in Central and Eastern Europe, especially from Krakow in the Communist period, and argues that music can and should be treated as one of the main points of relation between Roma and non-Roma. It discusses Romani performers and the complexity of their situation as conditioned by the political situations starkly affected by the Communist regime, and then by its fall. Against this backdrop, the book engages with musician Stefan Dymiter (known as Corroro) as the leader of his own street band: unwelcome in the public space by the authorities, merely tolerated by others, but admired by many passers-by and respected by his peer Romain musicians and international music stars. It emphasizes the role of Romani musicians in Krakow in shaping the soundscape of the city while also demonstrating their collective and individual strategies to adapt to the new circumstances in terms of the preferred performative techniques, repertoire, and overall lifestyle.

Book Edward MacDowell s European Piano Music

Download or read book Edward MacDowell s European Piano Music written by Paul Bertagnolli and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-10 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward MacDowell’s European Piano Music is a critical study of the piano music that MacDowell composed during his European sojourn (1876–1888), steeped in reception history and with a special emphasis of programmaticism. The book expands current knowledge of MacDowell’s childhood in four of the chapters based on his previously uninvestigated sheet music collection, thereby achieving a better balance among the stages of MacDowell’s life than is evident in most books of the life-and-works variety. Prolific contemporaneous music criticism, meticulously preserved in MacDowell’s scrapbooks, is likewise undervalued in the MacDowell literature, but it furnishes penetrating observations about the expressive and programmatic content of numerous compositions, especially as it was revealed to critics when MacDowell performed his own works. Lastly, the book offers explanations for why MacDowell immersed himself in European culture for decades and then, at a crucial juncture in his career, embraced diverse American heritages and worked toward a conception of a pluralistic music that was American “in a creative sense.” The book’s content and methodology would appeal most directly to specialists within the broad fields of musicology and music theory, particularly within American art music and its composers; nineteenth-century music; program music; reception history; and piano literature.
