Book Shame and Glory of the Intellectuals

Download or read book Shame and Glory of the Intellectuals written by Peter Viereck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this classic volume, written at the height of the Cold War, with a new preface of 2006, Peter Viereck, one of the foremost intellectual spokesmen of modern conservatism, examines the differing responses of American and European intellectuals to the twin threats of Nazism and Soviet communism. In so doing, he seeks to formulate a humanistic conservatism with which to counter the danger of totalitarian thought in the areas of politics, ethics, and art.The glory of the intellectuals was the firm moral stance they took against Nazism at a time when appeasement was the preferred path of many politicians; their shame lay in their failure to recognize the brutality of Stalinism to the extent of becoming apologists for or accomplices of its tyranny. In Viereck's view, this failure is rooted in an abandonment of humane values that he sees as a legacy of nineteenth-century romanticism and certain strands of modernist thought and aesthetics.Among his targets are literary obscurantism as personified by Ezra Pound, the academicization of literary culture, the rigidity of adversarial avant-gardism, and the failure of many writers and cultural institutions to conserve the very heritage their political freedom and security depend on. Viereck represents their attitude in a series of satirical dialogues with Gaylord Babbitt, son of Sinclair Lewis' embodiment of conservative philistinism. Babbitt Junior is as unreflective as his father, but the objects of his credulity are the received ideas of liberal progressivism and avant-garde mandarinism. Ultimately, Viereck's critique stands as a timely rebuke to the extremism of both left and right.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if you could trust in getting the health care you need in ways that felt good and helped you thrive? What if the health system honored and valued queer and trans people’s lives, bodies and expertise? What if LGBTQ+ communities led and organized our own health care as a form of mutual aid? What if every aspect of our health care was rooted in a commitment to our healing, pleasure and liberation? LGBTQ+ health care doesn’t look like this today, but it could. This is the care we dream of. Through a series of essays (by the author and others) and interviews, this book by the editor of the Lambda Literary Award-winning anthology The Remedy offers possibilities—grounded in historical examples, present-day experiments, and dreams of the future – for more liberatory and transformative approaches to LGBTQ+ health and healing. It challenges readers to think differently about LGBTQ+ health and asks what it would look if our health care was rooted in a commitment to the flourishing and liberation of all LGBTQ+ people. This book is a calling out, a calling in and a call to action. It is a spell of healing and transformation, rooted in love.

Book First Hymn to Life in Congo

Download or read book First Hymn to Life in Congo written by Constant Tsouza and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maria had been raped by a way of lifea way of life known as Coconis, which refers to various kinds of vicious, horrific, and inexcusable forms of barbaric behaviour. As a direct consequence of this horrific and violent crime, Maria gave birth a few months later, just like several other young girls who had also become innocent, silent, and secret victims of similar crimes in this country. However, unlike some of the other young woman victims, Maria was blessed with a strong faith in God. She was determined not to resort to taking her own life and not to destroy the tiny life which was already gradually starting to grow inside her womb. Maria had simply decided to transform this violent and hateful act which had stripped her of all human dignity into something much more powerful and good. She wanted to be able to truly forgive, not just the kind of forgiveness given by those who have no choice, but the kind of forgiveness proffered by the weak and feeble to those who are stronger because they have no other choice in the matter. Neither was it the biblical kind when one simply forgives ones fellow men for their sins and wrongdoings. It wasnt like the forgiveness given by God either, but more of Marias own personal and unique quest for forgiveness that she so yearned to be able to give to the young men who had raped her. Maria was determined that her rapists should recognize the brutality and wickedness of their acts and then implore her forgiveness so that she herself could, in turn, sincerely forgive them. It was the only way for her to redeem her personal dignity. She felt that she had suffered enough and that she had every right to expect her rapists recognition of the terrible suffering that they had inflicted on her. So it was on a beautiful sunny Saturday morning of June that Maria finally gave birth to twin boys. She called them Kimia and Elikia (which means peace and faith in the Congolese language). Maria brought up and educated her twin boys in a traditional way. She possessed a sufficient sum of money to pay for their education and see them through to the end of their high school education. She knew that she had done her very best with regard to their civil education. She died not long after receiving her twin sons baccalaurat results. She died in peace, but without having had the opportunity to be able to truly forgive her brutal attackers. She died without anyone coming to ask her for forgiveness and without having been able to offer her sincere forgiveness. But her last thoughts really went out to her wonderful children. She remembered the great ocean of motherly love that she had been able to give them during their upbringing. Before she closed her eyes for the last time, she asked God to bless them. On her deathbed, she didnt have the slightest inkling of the powerful impact of the incredible testimonial that she had succeeded in bequeathing to her children. As Maria, Africa had also been kidnapped, raped (and its not a Belgian story), and tortured for centuries. From those repeated rapes were born sick and weak republics. None of the many rapists did recognize the shameful paternity despite the fact that their saliva and blood were still visible everywhere, and there was no need for complex DNA analysis to find out whom they belong to.

Book This Is All a Dream We Dreamed

Download or read book This Is All a Dream We Dreamed written by Blair Jackson and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years after the Grateful Dead was formed, the band still exerts a powerful influence over hundreds of thousands of fans around the world. Today, an entire generation of Deadheads who have never experienced a live Dead show are still drawn to the music and the complex and colorful subculture that has grown up around it. In This Is All a Dream We Dreamed, Blair Jackson and David Gans, two of the most well-respected chroniclers of the Dead, reveal the band's story through the words of its members and their creative collaborators, as well as a number of diverse fans, stitching together a multitude of voices into a seamless oral tapestry. Woven into this musical saga is an examination of the subculture that developed into its own economy, touching fans from all walks of life, from penniless hippies to celebrities, and at least one U.S. vice president. The book traces the band's evolution from its folk/bluegrass beginnings through the Jug Band craze, an early incarnation as Rolling Stones wannabes, feral psychedelic warriors, the Americana jam band that blazed through the '70s, to the shockingly popular but still iconoclastic stadium-filling band of later years. The Dead broke every rule of the music business along the way, taking risks and venturing into new territory as they fused inspired ideas and techniques with intuition and fearlessness to create a sound-and a business model-unlike anything heard and seen before.
