Book At Home in Mumbai

Download or read book At Home in Mumbai written by Chandrima Pal and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mumbai is place you can call home and yet remain homeless. Friendly and hostile, generous and ruthless, no other city captures your imagination with such fierceness. And no other city obsesses as much over space with such passion. The boy who calls a square on the pavement his 'ghar' or the globetrotting fashion entrepreneur at her Cumballa Hill home, a star waving out to his fans from his Bandra terrace, to the migrant who struggles to find acceptance in the city teeming with 'outsiders', every person in this city has a story of negotiating the idea of space. This is an attempt to tell some of these stories, to understand what being 'at home' really means to those who have been part of the incredible narrative that is Mumbai.

Book A Place to Call Home

Download or read book A Place to Call Home written by Ramya Ramanath and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any city is a product of politics and economics, organizations and people. Yet, the life experiences of women uprooted from its poorest quarters seldom inform urban resettlement plans. In this ethnographic field study, Ramya Ramanath, Associate Professor at DePaul University, examines the lives of women displaced by slum clearance and relocated to the largest slum resettlement site in Asia. Through conversations with diverse women of different ages, levels of education, types of employment, marital status, ethnicity, caste, religion, and household make-up, Ramanath recounts how women negotiate a drastic change in environment, from makeshift housing in a park slum to ownership of a high-rise apartment in a posh Mumbai suburb. Each phase of their city lives reflects how women initiate change and disseminate a vision valuable to planners intent on urban and residential transformations. Ramanath urges the concerted engagement of residents in design, development, and evaluation of place-making processes in cities and within their own neighborhoods especially. This book will interest scholars of public policy, women and gender studies, South Asian studies, and urban planning.

Book excerpt: Hazy how it all began Was there ever a middle Or just a harsh end Words were mine to set free But were they worthy of every eye Or just meant to be kept hushed inside For every woman who ever tried Wanting a life that could mirror her mind Or forced to surrender to an unjust fate Never wanted to be a hero Nor thought of herself as brave Or would she have if she knew how it ends Hope a dew for just a while Wonder who drops it from the sky Or are they tears of a lonely night She needs no name For its forever some unknown name Or does she even have a name The one who loved And had seen no pain Or was there ever such a fair game See her, but see her through my eyes Let thoughts linger a while longer inside Or forever wonder, did she run or at least hide?

Book Maharashtra Human Development Report 2012 TOWARDS INCLUSIVE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Download or read book Maharashtra Human Development Report 2012 TOWARDS INCLUSIVE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT written by Jayachandran Usha and published by Sage . This book was released on 2014 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present Maharashtra Human Development Report (MHDR) 2012 keeps the spirit of the Eleventh and Twelfth Five Year Plans of ‘faster, sustainable and more inclusive growth’ at the core of its analysis. MHDR 2002 was the state’s first effort in focusing on the prevailing human development scenario in the spheres of growth, poverty, equity, education, health and nutrition. Since then the state has come a long way in the last decade, achieving near-complete enrolments at the primary school level, a wide coverage of health infrastructure and initiation of new incentives, to name a few. The 2012 Report goes beyond being just a situation-analysis of the current human development scenario to a more analytical exercise in facilitating a deeper understanding of what and where the inequalities are, how capabilities can be enhanced, what has been the progress, where the shortfalls are and where the thrust of efforts to promote human development should be. Recognizing the centrality of inclusive growth processes to human development, the need to study human development outcomes disaggregated by gender, rural–urban, regional and social groups is the focal point of this Report. The outcome would be the identification of specific human development goals, evidence-based policy recommendations and directions to how those excluded from the growth and human development processes can be included to reap the benefits of the same.

Book The East India Company at Home 1757 1857

Download or read book The East India Company at Home 1757 1857 written by Margot Finn and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East India Company at Home, 1757–1857 explores how empire in Asia shaped British country houses, their interiors and the lives of their residents. It includes chapters from researchers based in a wide range of settings such as archives and libraries, museums, heritage organisations, the community of family historians and universities. It moves beyond conventional academic narratives and makes an important contribution to ongoing debates around how empire impacted Britain. The volume focuses on the propertied families of the East India Company at the height of Company rule. From the Battle of Plassey in 1757 to the outbreak of the Indian Uprising in 1857, objects, people and wealth flowed to Britain from Asia. As men in Company service increasingly shifted their activities from trade to military expansion and political administration, a new population of civil servants, army officers, surveyors and surgeons journeyed to India to make their fortunes. These Company men and their families acquired wealth, tastes and identities in India, which travelled home with them to Britain. Their stories, the biographies of their Indian possessions and the narratives of the stately homes in Britain that came to house them, frame our explorations of imperial culture and its British legacies.

Book The Modern Anthropology of India

Download or read book The Modern Anthropology of India written by Peter Berger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Modern Anthropology of India is an accessible textbook providing a critical overview of the ethnographic work done in India since 1947. It assesses the history of research in each region and serves as a practical and comprehensive guide to the main themes dealt with by ethnographers. It highlights key analytical concepts and paradigms that came to be of relevance in particular regions in the recent history of research in India, and which possibly gained a pan-Indian or even trans-Indian significance. Structured according to the states of the Indian union, contributors raise several key questions, including: What themes were ethnographers interested in? What are the significant ethnographic contributions? How are peoples, communities and cultural areas represented? How has the ethnographic research in the area developed? Filling a significant gap in the literature, the book is an invaluable resource to students and researchers in the field of Indian anthropology/ethnography, regional anthropology and postcolonial studies. It is also of interest to students of South Asian studies in general as it provides an extensive and critical overview of regionally based ethnographic activity undertaken in India.
