Book excerpt: West Texas, the 1950's. Buck, a motherless, brilliant boy whose wealthy father's death leaves him without purpose, seeks answers in a quest to medical school. He succeeds but lapses into drink and despair. At his bunkhouse door appears a beautiful and perceptive Hispanic girl-Maria, a dark wanderer who speaks English like a peeress. She rescues him and restores his home to its glory. Falling in love, Buck is inspired and in his bam laboratory builds a device which can prevent deaths like his father's. One great obstacle remains and torments the inventor. Maria, pregnant, proud and unwilling to distract him, strikes out on her own. Her real reason for leaving and her devotion to Buck are obscured by the trickery of Gaines Brill, a medical classmate who comes to cash in 011 Buck's work and fortune. With intense ambition Brill builds a promising enterprise, enlisting the aid of shadowy Washington figures who want to control and pervert the device Buck created. Finally unable to stay away Maria returns with her infant and bestows upon Buck the key to completion of his work. Buck's last experiment upon himself, however, produces a fatal injury and Maria succumbs as well, both of their deaths caused by Brill's neglect and consuming greed. But the baby girl survives. Her life is used by Brill in his pose as a humane industrialist, but her enlightenment, and her revenge, will come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use this spiritual guide to equip yourself with the tools needed to tear down anxiety and build inner peace. Spiritual people often find that their own expectations of living a life dedicated to a higher power makes them more susceptible to high-functioning anxiety. Sometimes, traditional relaxation techniques either do not work, don’t last, or, in some cases, actually increase their anxiety. Psychotherapist, yoga teacher, and interfaith minister Rev. Connie L. Habash has helped hundreds of spiritual people overcome fear and anxiety, regain happiness, and feel calmer. In over twenty-five years as a counselor helping spiritual people overcome anxiety, Rev. Connie has taught that it takes more than chanting mantras, stretching, or relaxation techniques to calm anxiety. It requires a transformation in perception, moment-to-moment body awareness, and a conscious response to thoughts and emotions. Awakening from Anxiety provides valuable psycho-spiritual tools to deepen spiritual awakening and calm fears:Learn what anxiety is and when it becomes a problemUnderstand the six mistakes spiritual people make that increase anxietyDiscover the seven keys to a more calm, confident, courageous lifeKnow how to break through the old patterns of stress, worry, and fear into a new perception of your true selfExplore spiritual principles and yoga philosophy to cultivate inner peace If you enjoyed Stop Anxiety from Stopping You and First, We Make the Beast Beautiful, Awakening from Anxiety will take your healing and renewal from anxiety to the next level. “A book I will recommend to many for both practical advice and spiritual insights for handling stress, worry, and anxiety.”?Becca Anderson, author of Prayers for Calm

Download or read book A World in a Shell written by Thom van Dooren and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the trails of Hawai‘i’s snails to explore the simultaneously biological and cultural significance of extinction. In this time of extinctions, the humble snail rarely gets a mention. And yet snails are disappearing faster than any other species. In A World in a Shell, Thom van Dooren offers a collection of snail stories from Hawai‘i—once home to more than 750 species of land snails, almost two-thirds of which are now gone. Following snail trails through forests, laboratories, museums, and even a military training facility, and meeting with scientists and Native Hawaiians, van Dooren explores ongoing processes of ecological and cultural loss as they are woven through with possibilities for hope, care, mourning, and resilience. Van Dooren recounts the fascinating history of snail decline in the Hawaiian Islands: from deforestation for agriculture, timber, and more, through the nineteenth century shell collecting mania of missionary settlers, and on to the contemporary impacts of introduced predators. Along the way he asks how both snail loss and conservation efforts have been tangled up with larger processes of colonization, militarization, and globalization. These snail stories provide a potent window into ongoing global process of environmental and cultural change, including the largely unnoticed disappearance of countless snails, insects, and other less charismatic species. Ultimately, van Dooren seeks to cultivate a sense of wonder and appreciation for our damaged planet, revealing the world of possibilities and relationships that lies coiled within a snail’s shell.
