It aims to provide an all-encompassing view of graffiti practices and corpora in ancient Egypt, ranging from predynastic rock art in the Eastern Desert, to hieratic inscriptions in Middle Egyptian tombs, and demotic signatures in Karnak temple. A range of specialists present primary data from three different environments-deserts, tombs, and temples-following common lines of inquiry that aim to look beyond their textual or iconographic content and address graffiti's agency more closely. Accordingly, this book investigates the interplay between secondary inscriptions and images, the space in which they were embedded, and the audiences for whom they were intended. The ancient site, its town, its temples, and its necropolis had not been the focus of any archaeological interest since the 1920s. In the 1980s and 1990s some attempts to start scientifi c work in Asyut failed. Only in 2003 a new field project began: The Asyut Project. A joint mission of the Universities of Munster (2003 and 2004), Mainz (2004 up to present) and Sohag (2003 up to present). Fieldwork and studies of former research work enabled the author to reconstruct for the first time the history of the ancient necropolis, and thereby of the ancient town and its different fortunes as a city of culture, as a border town, and as a wounded city.

Book excerpt: The fruit of fifteen years' research, this new book documents the 600 votive stelae and other objects discovered in 1922 in the Salakhana tomb on the Western Mountain of Asyut in Middle Egypt. The tomb belonged to Djefaihapy III, monarch of Asyut during the XIIth Dynasty, and was later used either as a shrine for votive offerings or as a depository for them. The stelae and figurines of the Salakhana trove date from early Dynasty XVIII to the Late Period, most of them falling within the Ramesside period. They provide a unique record of personal life and religion in Asyut during this period and represent a cross-section of society in that city. Donors came from almost all social strata and include, unusually, a number of women who dedicated stelae on their own initiative. The Salakhana stelae provide entirely new information on private worship in Middle Egypt.
