Book excerpt: Due to a poor history of research and the deprival of many of its monuments, Asyut had been forgotten for a long time. The ancient site, its town, its temples, and its necropolis had not been the focus of any archaeological interest since the 1920s. In the 1980s and 1990s some attempts to start scientifi c work in Asyut failed. Only in 2003 a new field project began: The Asyut Project. A joint mission of the Universities of Munster (2003 and 2004), Mainz (2004 up to present) and Sohag (2003 up to present). Fieldwork and studies of former research work enabled the author to reconstruct for the first time the history of the ancient necropolis, and thereby of the ancient town and its different fortunes as a city of culture, as a border town, and as a wounded city.

Book Asyut Tomb III Objects

Download or read book Asyut Tomb III Objects written by Nadine Deppe and published by Harrassowitz. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German-Egyptian "Asyut Project" has been working in the Gebel Asyut al-gharbi, the Asyut necropolis in middle Egypt since 2003. One of the most studied tombs is that of prince Iti-ibi, ruler of the city at around 2040 BC. His tomb is considered to be one of the largest of the First Intermediate Period in Egypt. It has been repeatedly re-used, raided or used for storage space by early archaeologists. Despite, or rather thanks to, its unhappy history, the tomb contained many findings from the First Intermediate to the Early Modern Period, the first part of which is presented in this study: amulets, glass, wooden models, mollusks, clay offering plates and Ushabtis. These collections provide the first systematic insight into the specific regional characteristics of Asyut culture.

Book excerpt: Volume 2 in the series "The Asyut Project" presents the contributions of an international conference held at Sohag University after the first seven seasons of Egyptian-German cooperation in archaeological fieldwork in the necropolis of Asyut, Middle Egypt. The volume is edited by scholars of the three Egyptological institutions involved in the project, the Universities of Berlin (Freie Universitat), Sohag and Mainz. The first article gives an overview of the present state of knowledge of the historical background of Asyut, the different functions of the western mountain (Gebel Asyut al-gharbi), and its architectural structures from Egyptian Old Kingdom to Late Antiquity and partially Islamic Period. It is followed by a study on the succession of the First Intermediate Period/ Middle Kingdom local ruling elite (the so-called nomarchs) which reconstructs the eventful history of these eras. Special contributions are devoted to wooden models and offering plates as grave goods, hieratic visitors' graffiti, methods of epigraphy, reconstruction of tomb architecture, and Islamic pottery. In addition, analyses of the anthropological and botanical finds are presented. All articles are written in English and provided with an Arabic abstract. The plates include, among others, a systematic documentation of the investigated tombs.
