Book High Angular Resolution in Astrophysics

Download or read book High Angular Resolution in Astrophysics written by A. Lagrange and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade many efforts have been made to develop high angular resolution techniques in astrophysics. Combined with imaging facilities, they have rapidly proved their efficiency and have already led to major astrophysical results. During the decade to come, astronomers will be offered new, even more sophisticated high angular resolution tools, especially in the IR and optical domains, coupled with much bigger telescopes, either on the ground or in space. In such a context of rapidly evolving techniques and a growing need for higher angular resolution to test theories or discover new objects, the present book reviews both instrumental and scientific aspects. The main questions addressed are: what kind of science will benefit from high angular resolution techniques? How can they best be used? Audience: The book is accessible to students and research workers in both instrumental and astrophysical aspects.

Book Interferometry and Synthesis in Radio Astronomy

Download or read book Interferometry and Synthesis in Radio Astronomy written by A. Richard Thompson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-11-20 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive, authoritative coverage of interferometric techniques for radio astronomy In this Second Edition of Interferometry and Synthesis in Radio Astronomy, three leading figures in the development of large imaging arrays, including very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI), describe and explain the technology that provides images of the universe with an angular resolution as fine as 1/20,000 of an arcsecond. This comprehensive volume begins with a historical review followed by detailed coverage of the theory of interferometry and synthesis imaging, analysis of interferometer response, geometrical relationships, polarimetry, antennas, and arrays. Discussion of the receiving system continues with analysis of the response to signals and noise, analog design requirements, and digital signal processing. The authors detail special requirements of VLBI including atomic frequency standards, broadband recording systems, and antennas in orbit. Further major topics include: * Calibration of data and synthesis of images * Image enhancement using nonlinear algorithms * Techniques for astrometry and geodesy * Propagation in the neutral atmosphere and ionized media * Radio interference * Related techniques: intensity interferometry, moon occultations, antenna holography, and optical interferometry Interferometry and Synthesis in Radio Astronomy, Second Edition is comprehensive in that it provides an excellent overview of most radio astronomical instrumentation and techniques.

Book Optical Infrared and Radio Astronomy

Download or read book Optical Infrared and Radio Astronomy written by Rosa Poggiani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook presents the established sciences of optical, infrared, and radio astronomy as distinct research areas, focusing on the science targets and the constraints that they place on instrumentation in the different domains. It aims to bridge the gap between specialized books and practical texts, presenting the state of the art in different techniques. For each type of astronomy, the discussion proceeds from the orders of magnitude for observable quantities that drive the building of instrumentation and the development of advanced techniques. The specific telescopes and detectors are then presented, together with the techniques used to measure fluxes and spectra. Finally, the instruments and their limits are discussed to assist readers in choice of setup, planning and execution of observations, and data reduction. The volume also includes worked examples and problem sets to improve student understanding; tables and figures in chapters su mmarize the state of the art of instrumentation and techniques.

  • Author : Pierre Lena
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last twenty years astronomy has been developing dramatically. Until the nineteen-fifties, telescopes, spectrometers, and photographic plates consti tuted a relatively simple set of tools which had been refined to a high degree of perfection by the joint efforts of physicists and astronomers. Indeed these tools helped at the birth of modern astrophysics: the discovery of the expan sion of the Universe. Then came radioastronomy and the advent of electronics; the last thirty years have seen the application to astrophysics of a wealth of new experimental techniques, based on the most advanced fields of physics, and a constant interchange of ideas between physicists and astronomers. Last, but not least, modern computers have sharply reduced the burden of dealing with the information painfully extracted from the skies, whether from ever scarce photons, or from the gigantic data flows provided by satellites and large telescopes. The aim of this book is not to give an extensive overview of all the tech niques currently in use in astronomy, nor to provide detailed instructions for preparing or carrying out an astronomical project. Its purpose is methodologi cal: photons are still the main carriers of information between celestial sources and the observer. How we are to collect, sample, measure, and store this infor mation is the unifying theme of the book. Rather than the diversity of tech niques appropriate for each wavelength range, we emphasize the physical and mathematical bases which are common to all wavelength regimes.
