Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Folks' AstronomyThe commendation which the astronomical articles in the Young Folks' Cyclopaedia of Com mon Things have received from parents and teachers has led to the preparation of this little volume, in the hope that it will fill a want long felt in homes and schools. There can be little question of the propriety of early grounding a child in an elementary knowledge of the astro nomical features of the earth on which he lives and of the universe of which it forms a part; yet it is almost impossible to find a text-book in which either the language or the ideas are within an ordinary child's comprehension, most of the books miscalled astronomy primers being fit ted only for those who already possess some knowledge of the science and of its correlated subjects. In the present work the topic is treated in the most elementary way, the child being first taught that the earth is a heavenly body which moves in the heavens in the same way as the moon, and which would look from the moon at night much as the moon looks to us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earth and Sky: A Primer of Astronomy for Young Readers Looking more carefully at the difference between the two directions of the new education we can see what each accomplishes. There is first an effort to train the original powers of the individual and make him self-active, quick at observation, and free in his thinking. Next, the new education endeavors, by the reading of books and the study of the wisdom of the race, to make the child or youth a participator in the results of experience of all mankind. These two movements may be made antagonistic by poor teaching. The book knowledge, containing as it does the precious lesson of human experience, may be so taught as to bring with it only dead rules of conduct, only dead scraps of information, and no stimulant to original thinking. Its contents may be memorized without being understood. On the other hand, the self-activity of the child may be stimulated at the expense of his social well-being - his originality may be cultivated at the expense of his rationality. If he is taught persistently to have his own way, to trust only his own senses. To cling to his own opinions heedless of the experience of his fellows, he is pre paring for an unsuccessful, misanthropic career, and is likely enough to end his life in a madhouse. It is admitted that a too exclusive study of the knowledge found in books, the knowledge which is aggregated from the experience and thought of other people, may result in loading the mind of the pupil with material which he can not use to advantage. Book The Stars and Their Stories

Download or read book The Stars and Their Stories written by Alice Mary Matlock Griffith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stars and Their Stories: A Book for Young People MY purpose here is to interest the child in the stars, which are always with him; to stimulate his imagination; and to direct him in a pastime - the hunting out of the constellations and individual stars - that may become an enduring joy. With the help of the oblong charts and their duplicates, in which Miss Boroughs has placed the animals, he can learn the constellations separately and in groups, with the ancient mythic animals in their places; and by using the round charts at the back of the book, he can see the sky as a whole, as it appears from our Northern Hemi sphere during the different seasons, and trace out the smaller or less important constellations which I have not given. A good way to learn the configurations that form the constellations is to draw them. If the charts are held over the head, with the cardinal points in the proper places, the stars can be seen as they are in the sky; or the same result can be obtained by one who sits facing the south and holds the charts with the north end upwards. If any child has as much pleasure in reading this book as I have had in preparing it, or obtains a broader outlook upon life from its perusal, all my efforts will be fully repaid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Overhead: Or What Harry and Nelly Discovered in the Heavens Next to the teacher, comes the book: and there is a good field for the writers who, having the genius for pleasing the severe critics which a tenth of a century can produce, shall exert their genius in presenting, in entertaining ways, the truths of Natural Science so far as they relate to things of every - day life. The present little book is an example in point. To be sure, I think the writers have rather stolen a march on the little folks in covering up a primer of astronomy under the guise of a story, but the deception is of the same nature as we use in the Kinder garten. We appeal to the boy's interest in what he sees about him, and while he thinks he has only pleasure of the lighter sort in the story or the game, we know that some new truth is being added to his mind, some new muscle is being called into play, he is taking another step in the analysis of cause and effect, he is steadily learning to think. It need hardly be said that this little book is not meant for a text-book even in the most modest of the Institutes for which some sections of our country are so justly - we'll say - noto rions. It belongs in the nursery intermediate between Cinder ella and Robinson Crusoe, and perhaps somewhat displacing Sanford and Merton and dear old Mr. Barlow, though the two former must have grey beards by this time, and doubtless Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historicals for the Young Folks The time will probably never come when the school histories of America shall be so crowded With valuable records that there will not be room for a sketch of the lives of Columbus and 'washington. Still, there are many interesting biographies and incidents for which there is not space in those books for anything more than a passing notice. We are well aware that there are large historical works where all these subjects are thoroughly handled by abler pens than our own, but there are many readers who do not have access to such books. Our object has been to collect and arrange, in the form of a continuous narrative, an account of a few charac ters and events in so small a volume that it shall be within the means of all who wish to obtain more information on these topics than is given in works prepared only for study.
