L V, LO, and other lines drawn from the point L to the borders of VO will be dark. The regiou Vost'k dark and it is called the shadow of VO. If the source of light is not a mere point the shadow is not so simple. The candleflame AB shines on the sphere DC and illuminates onehalf of it. The region to the right of the sphere and between the lines BDS' and ACS receives no light at all. If a screen is interposed the shadow is shown quite black at S'S. None of the region to the right of the sphere between the lines AP' and BP is fully illuminated. Some of the candle-flame is cut off...
