Book Astronomy a Simple Introduction to a Noble Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book Astronomy a Simple Introduction to a Noble Science Classic Reprint written by Edmund Neison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-07 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Astronomy a Simple Introduction to a Noble Science Many of the illustrations in the first portion of the work are taken from woodcuts in the earlier contributions to our knowledge of Astronomy. But, throughout, no attempt at refinement has been made in the illustrations, as the soft aspect and delicate gradations of light and shade inseparable from the proper delineation of the planets, comets, and nebulae, can rarely be reproduced by ordinary woodcuts; whilst for the present purpose any other process was out of the question. The figures are sufficient, however, for the only purpose desired, - the elucidation of the descriptive text. Book An Introduction to Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Astronomy Classic Reprint written by Forest Ray Moulton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-28 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy An illustration will make the process clearer than an extended argument. Obviously, all men have observed moving bodies all their lives, yet the fact that a moving body, subject to no exterior force, proceeds in a straight line with uniform speed was not known until about the time of Galileo (1564 - 1642) and Newton (1643 When the result is once enunciated it is easy to recall many confirmatory experiences, and it now seems remarkable that so simple a fact should have remained so long undiscovered. It was also noted by Newton that when a body is acted on by a force it has an acceleration (acceleration is the rate of change of velocity) in the direction in which the force acts, and that the acceleration is proportional to the magnitude of the force. Dense bodies left free in the air fall toward the earth with accelerated velocity, and they are therefore subject to a force toward the earth. Newton observed these things in a large number of cases, and be inferred by induc tion that they are universally true. He focused particularly on the fact that every body is subject to a force directed toward the earth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Introduction to Astronomy

Download or read book An Introduction to Astronomy written by John Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy: Designed as a Reader and Text-Book for Schools and Families This work is designed to fill a vacuum in schools and families. With the advancement of science there should be a corresponding advancement in the facilities for acquiring a knowledge of it. To economize time and expense in this department is of as much import ance to the student as frugality and industry are to the success of the manufacturer or the merchant. Im pressed with the importance of these facts, and having a desire to aid in the general diffusion of useful know ledge by giving them some practical form, this work has been prepared. It has a double purpose. As a reader, it contains a great variety of topics; and, being almost entirely divested of scientific terms and phrases, its language is level to the comprehension of the youthful mind. As a text-book, it treats first of the sun and those heavenly bodies with which we are all, by obser vation, most familiar, and advances, consecutively, in the investigation of other worlds and systems which the telescope has revealed to our view. Thus to enhance the interest and value of this work to the student and casual reader, nearly all of the topics that it contains are fully illustrated by engravings, prepared expressly for that purpose. And to promote this object still further, and impart knowledge in the most impressive manner by a sensible demonstration of the arrangement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Astronomy: For the Use of Science Classes and Elementary and Middle Class Schools The present Work is intended to supply a want which has been. Felt for a long time by those engaged in the scientific education of the young. Astronomy has not been generally cultivated in this country to nearly the extent that it has been, and still is, upon the Continent and in America; and it is believed that this is in some part owing to the want of elementary works on the sub ject. They must be sufficiently cheap to form class-books for middle-class schools, sufficiently scientific to imbue the youthful mind with a love for the science in its true aspect, and yet at the same time sufficiently easy and free from technicalities and mathematical reasoning to be read and understood with the imperfect knowledge of pure mathe maties, possessed by this class of students. Such then has been the aim of this Work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendium of Astronomy: Containing the Elements of the Science, Familiarly Explained and Illustrated; Adapted to the Use of High Schools and Academies, and of the General Reader The extensive patronage which this work has enjoyed, both as a private manual, and as a text-book in the schools, lays the author under peculiar obligation to render it deserving of public favor. He has therefore, with much care and pains, prepared this revised edition, using his best endeavors to present to the learner, in a short com pass, a clear, faithful, and comprehensive outline of the noble science of Astronomy. The earlier portions of the work, treating as they do of subjects which are in their nature of a fixed ch aracter, such as definitions and the doctrine of the sphere, have appeared to him susceptible of little improve ment, and accordingly have been suffered to remain unchanged but the latter portions, relating to the Planets, Comets, Fixed Stars, and Nebulae, have required to be entirely rewritten, in order to embrace those nu mercus and grand discoveries with which astronomy has been enriched within a few years past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Depths of Space: A Primer of Astronomy The object of this little book is to give in simple language a comprehensive idea of the Universe. It is intended to supply a felt want, and does not aspire to be an exhaustive text-book of the science of astronomy; neither does it aspire to deal with the mathematical and instrumental sides of the science. The use of technical phrases has been as far as possible avoided, so that the beginner may have no difficulty in thoroughly mastering the book and in proceeding to the more advanced works on the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendium of Astronomy: Containing the Elements of the Science, Familiarly Explained and Illustrated, Adapted to the Use of Schools and Academies, and of the General Reader By omitting mathematical formula, and employing much familiar illustration, we have endeavored to bring the leading facts and doctrines of this noble and interesting science, within the comprehension of every attentive and intelligent reader. In no science, more than in this, are greater advantages to be derived from a lucid arrangement - an order which brings out every fact and doctrine of the science, just in the place where the mind is ready to receive it. A certain maturity of mind, and power of reflection, are, however, indispensable for under standing this science. Astronomy is ne study for children. Let them be employed on subjects more suited to the state of their capacities, until those faculties are more fully developed, which will enable them to learn to conceive correctly of the celestial motions. A work on Astronomy that is very easy, must be very superficial, and will be fodnd to enter little into the arcana of the science. The riches of this mine lie deep and no one can acquire them, who is either incompetent or unwilling to penetrate beneath the surface.
