Book Astro4U An Introduction to the Science of the Cosmos

Download or read book Astro4U An Introduction to the Science of the Cosmos written by Richard Ignace and published by Cognella Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Astro4U: An Introduction to the Science of the Cosmos excites students about the grandeur of astronomy and how the universe functions. Filled with vibrant figures and informative tables that support the written text, the book has a fresh, casual, student-friendly tone that dramatically increases interest in the material while also making it more accessible. The book provides a college-level description of science with astronomy serving as the vehicle of delivery for displaying the scientific model. The content follows a traditional progression of scale, beginning with a study of the sky, followed by discussions of ancient and medieval astronomy, modern scientific practices, and key physical principles. Chapters move through the Solar System, stars, then galaxies, and finally the cosmos as a whole. Additionally, the book presents astronomy as the story of light and gravity, crucial threads that permeate the text. Chapters often include a Ponder Section--in-depth, quantitative passages dealing with particular applications of interest such as space junk, the solar energy budget, and light travel time. Appendices provide information about physical constants and astronomical symbols. Because students often express concern about the math content in astronomy classes, the book begins with a chapter entitled "Astro Maths" that reviews all the mathematical skills and concepts needed to complete the course. This up-front investment increases student confidence, eliminates one of the primary blocks students face, and improves chances for student achievement and success. Astro4U is written for general education survey courses in astronomy that are geared to non-science majors.

Book Defending Planet Earth

  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2010-07-21
  • ISBN : 0309149681

Download or read book Defending Planet Earth written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-07-21 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States spends approximately $4 million each year searching for near-Earth objects (NEOs). The objective is to detect those that may collide with Earth. The majority of this funding supports the operation of several observatories that scan the sky searching for NEOs. This, however, is insufficient in detecting the majority of NEOs that may present a tangible threat to humanity. A significantly smaller amount of funding supports ways to protect the Earth from such a potential collision or "mitigation." In 2005, a Congressional mandate called for NASA to detect 90 percent of NEOs with diameters of 140 meters of greater by 2020. Defending Planet Earth: Near-Earth Object Surveys and Hazard Mitigation Strategies identifies the need for detection of objects as small as 30 to 50 meters as these can be highly destructive. The book explores four main types of mitigation including civil defense, "slow push" or "pull" methods, kinetic impactors and nuclear explosions. It also asserts that responding effectively to hazards posed by NEOs requires national and international cooperation. Defending Planet Earth: Near-Earth Object Surveys and Hazard Mitigation Strategies is a useful guide for scientists, astronomers, policy makers and engineers.

Book STAT2

  • Author : Ann Cannon
  • Publisher : Macmillan Higher Education
  • Release : 2018-11-05
  • ISBN : 1319067506
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book STAT2 written by Ann Cannon and published by Macmillan Higher Education. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: STAT2 introduces students to statistical modeling beyond what they have learned in a Stat 101 college course or an AP Statistics course. Building on basic concepts and methods learned in that course, STAT2 empowers students to analyze richer datasets that include more variables and address a broader range of research questions. Other than a working understanding of exponential and logarithmic functions, there are no prerequisites beyond successful completion of their first statistics course. To help all students make a smooth transition to this course, Chapter 0 reminds students of basic statistical terminology and also uses the familiar two-sample t-test as a way to illustrate the approach of specifying, estimating, and testing a statistical model. Using STAT2, students will: Go beyond their Stat 101 experience by learning to develop and apply models with both quantitative and categorical response variables, and with multiple explanatory variables. STAT2 Chapters are grouped into units that consider models based on the type of response and type of predictors. Discover that the practice of statistical modeling involves applying an interactive process. STAT2 employs a four-step process in all statistical modeling: Choose a form for the model, fit the model to the data, assess how well the model describes the data, and use the model to address the question of interest. Learn how to apply their developing judgment about statistical modeling. STAT2 introduces the idea of constructing statistical models at the very beginning, in a setting that students encountered in their Stat 101 course. This modeling focus continues throughout the course as students encounter new and increasingly more complicated scenarios. Analyze and draw conclusions from real data, which is crucial for preparing students to use statistical modeling in their professional lives. STAT2 incorporates real and rich data throughout the text. Using real data to address genuine research questions helps motivate students to study statistics. The richness stems not only from interesting contexts in a variety of disciplines, but also from the multivariable nature of most datasets.
