Using Astin's student involvement theory (1984), which posits the more a student is involved at the university, the more likely the students will be retained and graduate from the university. Much of the research over the past 20 years has been limited to study the impact of one form of involvement has on retention and graduation, while this study combines different forms of involvement and how they impact retention and graduation rates. This study occurs with a first-year cohort entering fall 2012 at a public four-year university in the Pacific Northwest. While considering students' entering characteristics, this study uses multiple analyses to explore how first semester student involvement (Greek life, Recreation center use, working on campus, etc.) affects first semester GPA, first-semester and first-year retention, and graduation rates. Overall findings show first semester GPA is still the best predictor of six-year graduation rates. The study also showed certain types of student involvement impacts first semester GPA. This impact led to the creation of a weighted Student Involvement Index in an attempt to predict six-year graduation rates. This new Student Involvement Index accurately predicted over 61% of the student outcomes based on student involvement during the first semester at the university."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether Alexander Astin's Theory of Student Involvement could be applied to an academic experience in an overseas setting. Using data collected from the program evaluations of 79 students who had participated in the Oregon University System exchange program in Lyon, France during a five year period, 14 research questions were formulated and their attendant hypotheses were tested. These questions asked about the relationships that existed between pairs of variables from the following list of six: extracurricular involvement, overall program satisfaction, housing satisfaction, residence hall satisfaction, academic achievement, and language level. The hypotheses for variable dyads, which had academic achievement as one of the components, were tested using regression analysis. All other hypotheses were analyzed using the Pearson's chi-square test. A P-value of .05 or less indicated a significant relationship between the two variables of interest. Only one significant finding, that the relationship between extracurricular involvement and language level is not independent, was proven in this study. The cross-tab display associated with the chi-square test for this hypothesis indicated that students in the higher language level group (Direct Exchange) were more involved in extracurricular activities than were the lower language level group (Institute) students. Although not statistically significant, three other findings of interest were discovered. These were: the relationship between extracurricular involvement and overall program satisfaction, the relationship between extracurricular involvement and housing satisfaction, and the relationship between overall program satisfaction and housing satisfaction. Based on this study alone, one could not conclude that Astin's Theory of Student Involvement is applicable in a study abroad program. The researcher suggests several possible reasons for this conclusion and makes recommendations for further research.

Book excerpt: Enhancing the self-beliefs of college students—in particular, academic self-concept—has been suggested as one way to enhance college student success. However, the literature on the influence of college often does not clearly identify nor effectively assess the type of self-belief being investigated, and little remains known as to how and when college specifically influences student self-beliefs during different periods of the undergraduate experience. This study used an original survey to investigate what college environmental factors and what types of student involvements, if any, influence academic self-concept during the first-year of college. The survey was developed using Alexander Astin’s theory of student involvement and Input-Environment-Outcome conceptual model as a guideline. The survey also included a pretest of academic self-concept using questions adapted from the Academic Self-Concept Scale. Six significant predictors of academic self-concept were identified, lending both theory and practice recommendations for higher education institutions that seek to improve academic self-concept among first-year students and, by extension, student retention rates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participation in non-classroom activities has been documented to extend the intellectual, social, and psychosocial outcomes of the college experience. However, the benefits of non-classroom activities are often difficult to quantify due their voluntary nature, with findings mostly related to students within four-year institutions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether rural community college full-time freshman students who participate in non-classroom activities differ from nonparticipants with regard to self-identified values of academic integration, social integration, degree commitment, collegiate stress, and institutional commitment. These five factors have been demonstrated to influence student persistence and were adopted from Davidson et al.’s (2015) College Persistence Questionnaire, Version 2 (CPQ-V2). CPQ-V2 data were collected using an electronic survey distributed during the Fall 2021 semester. Survey participants offered details about their personal background and involvement in non-classroom activities, followed by responses to a series of questions from an adapted form of the CPQ-V2. The chi-square test of independence and one-way ANOVA were used to identify significant associations or relationships between variables. Data were analyzed through the lens of Astin’s theory of student involvement and Tinto’s theory of student departure. The results of analysis detected statistically significant associations between students’ level of involvement and their program of study, residency, employment, parental education, and volume of online classes. Their type of involvement was found to have a significant association with student residency. The level of involvement among students was also found to be significantly associated with their self-reported sense of social integration and degree commitment, a finding that was accompanied by the types of involvement and their statistical significance to their sense of social integration. Results from the survey instrument can vary across institutions and student populations; still, the results further demonstrate the differences among student groups in their non-classroom involvement. Accordingly, practitioners should continuously monitor their institution’s effectiveness in providing non-classroom opportunities that meet community college students’ needs and support their persistence efforts.
