Book excerpt: The Advanced Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) is a research facility instrument on NASA’s Terra spacecraft. We celebrated the 20th anniversary of ASTER’s launch in December 1999. ASTER has been providing high spatial resolution multispectral data in the VNIR, SWIR, and TIR regions, and along-track stereo data. Starting April 2016, ASTER data have been distributed to the public at no cost. Another important and the most popular data set is the ASTER Global DEM, which covers almost the entire land surface at a 30 m grid size. ASTER data have been widely used in a variety of application areas such as land surface mapping and change detection, volcano and other natural hazard monitoring, mineral exploration, and urban heat island monitoring. This Special Issue consists of 12 papers (2 reviews, 9 articles, and 1 technical note) and covers topics including development of new techniques to process ASTER data, calibration activities to ensure long-term consistency of ASTER data, validation of the ASTER data products, and scientific achievements using ASTER data.

Book Computer Processing of Remotely Sensed Images

Download or read book Computer Processing of Remotely Sensed Images written by Paul M. Mather and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-04-11 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Processing of Remotely-Sensed Images A thorough introduction to computer processing of remotely-sensed images, processing methods, and applications Remote sensing is a crucial form of measurement that allows for the gauging of an object or space without direct physical contact, allowing for the assessment and recording of a target under conditions which would normally render access difficult or impossible. This is done through the analysis and interpretation of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) that is reflected or emitted by an object, surveyed and recorded by an observer or instrument that is not in contact with the target. This methodology is particularly of importance in Earth observation by remote sensing, wherein airborne or satellite-borne instruments of EMR provide data on the planet’s land, seas, ice, and atmosphere. This permits scientists to establish relationships between the measurements and the nature and distribution of phenomena on the Earth’s surface or within the atmosphere. Still relying on a visual and conceptual approach to the material, the fifth edition of this successful textbook provides students with methods of computer processing of remotely sensed data and introduces them to environmental applications which make use of remotely-sensed images. The new edition’s content has been rearranged to be more clearly focused on image processing methods and applications in remote sensing with new examples, including material on the Copernicus missions, microsatellites and recently launched SAR satellites, as well as time series analysis methods. The fifth edition of Computer Processing of Remotely-Sensed Images also contains: A cohesive presentation of the fundamental components of Earth observation remote sensing that is easy to understand and highly digestible Largely non-technical language providing insights into more advanced topics that may be too difficult for a non-mathematician to understand Illustrations and example boxes throughout the book to illustrate concepts, as well as revised examples that reflect the latest information References and links to the most up-to-date online and open access sources used by students Computer Processing of Remotely-Sensed Images is a highly insightful textbook for advanced undergraduates and postgraduate students taking courses in remote sensing and GIS in Geography, Geology, and Earth & Environmental Science departments.

Book Locust Projects The 20th Anniversary Retrospective

Download or read book Locust Projects The 20th Anniversary Retrospective written by Locust Projects and published by Tra Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 20th Anniversary Retrospective from Miami’s Locust Projects comprehensively documents and celebrates 20 years of ground-breaking contemporary art from the Southeast’s leading alternative art space with a playful and sophisticated graphic design. Locust Projects, the Southeast’s leading alternative art space, documents its first 20 years in The 20th Anniversary Retrospective. The cutting-edge art space offers contemporary visual artists the freedom to experiment with new ideas. Locust’s ethos of encouraging exploration and breaking boundaries has, at times, extended to the very integrity of its physical space (think jackhammered floors). This volume includes a comprehensive visual record of over 150 exhibitions and projects, essays and commentary, a written timeline, and extensive quotes. Included are works by renowned artists such as Daniel Arsham, Hernan Bas, Nathan Carter, Francesa DiMattio, Jim Drain, Jon Pylypchuk, Retna, and Cristina Lei Rodriguez. The book includes text by director Lorie Mertes and board members Steve Lanster and Debra and Dennis Scholl. The innovative book design, like Locust Projects itself, experiments with convention. Visually referencing a calendar, the volume leads readers on a voyage of discovery through the organization’s history, with each year’s images visually bleeding into the next across French-fold pages. The cover’s thin strips of images are details from installation photos. This book will appeal to anyone interested in contemporary art, including artists, art lovers, collectors, students, curators, gallerists, and arts administrators.

Book Global Land Ice Measurements from Space

Download or read book Global Land Ice Measurements from Space written by Jeffrey S. Kargel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international team of over 150 experts provide up-to-date satellite imaging and quantitative analysis of the state and dynamics of the glaciers around the world, and they provide an in-depth review of analysis methodologies. Includes an e-published supplement. Global Land Ice Measurements from Space - Satellite Multispectral Imaging of Glaciers (GLIMS book for short) is the leading state-of-the-art technical and interpretive presentation of satellite image data and analysis of the changing state of the world's glaciers. The book is the most definitive, comprehensive product of a global glacier remote sensing consortium, Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS, http://www.glims.org). With 33 chapters and a companion e-supplement, the world's foremost experts in satellite image analysis of glaciers analyze the current state and recent and possible future changes of glaciers across the globe and interpret these findings for policy planners. Climate change is with us for some time to come, and its impacts are being felt by the world's population. The GLIMS Book, to be released about the same time as the IPCC's 5th Assessment report on global climate warming, buttresses and adds rich details and authority to the global change community's understanding of climate change impacts on the cryosphere. This will be a definitive and technically complete reference for experts and students examining the responses of glaciers to climate change. World experts demonstrate that glaciers are changing in response to the ongoing climatic upheaval in addition to other factors that pertain to the circumstances of individual glaciers. The global mosaic of glacier changes is documented by quantitative analyses and are placed into a perspective of causative factors. Starting with a Foreword, Preface, and Introduction, the GLIMS book gives the rationale for and history of glacier monitoring and satellite data analysis. It includes a comprehensive set of six "how-to" methodology chapters, twenty-five chapters detailing regional glacier state and dynamical changes, and an in-depth summary and interpretation chapter placing the observed glacier changes into a global context of the coupled atmosphere-land-ocean system. An accompanying e-supplement will include oversize imagery and other other highly visual renderings of scientific data.
