Download or read book Focusing written by Eugene T. Gendlin and published by Bantam. This book was released on 1982-08-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic guide to a powerful technique that can increase your mindfulness and lead to personal transformation Based on groundbreaking research conducted at the University of Chicago, the focusing technique has gained widespread popularity and scholarly acclaim. It consists of six easy-to-master steps that identify and change the way thoughts and emotions are held within the body. Focusing can be done virtually anywhere, at any time, and an entire “session” can take no longer than ten minutes, but its effects can be felt immediately–in the relief of bodily tension and psychological stress, as well as in dramatic shifts in understanding and insight. In this highly accessible guide, Dr. Eugene Gendlin, the award-winning psychologist who developed the focusing technique, explains the basic principles behind focusing and offers simple step-by-step instructions on how to utilize this powerful tool for tapping into greater self-awareness and inner wisdom. As you learn to develop your natural ability to “focus,” you’ll find yourself more in sync with both mind and body, filled with greater self-assurance, and better equipped to make the positive changes necessary to improve and enhance every aspect of your life.
Download or read book The Syntax of Information Structural Agreement written by Johannes Mursell and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this research monograph, Johannes Mursell discusses the syntactic impact of information-structural features on agreement. So far, the syntactic contribution of this type of feature has mostly been reduced to movement of topics or foci clause-initial position. Here, the author looks at a different phenomenon, syntactic agreement, and how this process can be dependent on information-structural properties. Based partly on original fieldwork from a typologically diverse set of languages, including Tagalog, Swahili, and Lavukaleve, it is argued that for most areas for which information-structural features have been discussed, it is possible to find cases where these features influence phi-feature agreement. The analysis is then extended to cases of Association with Focus, which does not involve phi-features but can still be accounted for with agreement of information-structural features. The book achieves two main goals: first it provides a uniform analysis for different constructions in unrelated languages. Second, it also gives a new argument that information-structural features should be treated as genuine syntactic features.
Download or read book Information Structure and Sentence Form written by Knud Lambrecht and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-11-13 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do speakers of all languages use different grammatical structures under different communicative circumstances to express the same idea? Professor Lambrecht explores the relationship between the structure of the sentence and the linguistic and extra-linguistic context in which it is used. His analysis is based on the observation that the structure of a sentence reflects a speaker's assumption about the hearer's state of knowledge and consciousness at the time of the utterance. This relationship between speaker assumptions and formal sentence structure is governed by rules and conventions of grammar, in a component called 'information structure'. Four independent but interrelated categories are analysed: presupposition and assertion, identifiability and activation, topic, and focus.

Download or read book Verb second as a reconstruction phenomenon written by Constantin Freitag and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation of V2-movement addresses the question which role the lexical content of the moved element plays during sentence processing. It draws on original theoretical arguments, empirical data and results from psycholinguistic experiments. The main finding is that the lexical content of the V2-verb is interpreted only at the end of the clause, i.e. at the base position of the finite verb.
Download or read book Problem Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy written by Fredric N. Busch, M.D. and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas psychoanalysis and psychodynamic therapy have traditionally avoided focusing too much on specific symptoms or problems--lest they interfere with free association--this new guide articulates the value of more active and symptom-focused interventions. Having worked on focused psychodynamic treatments of panic disorder, depression, trauma, and behavioral change, Fredric Busch, M.D. expands on that work here, articulating how a focused approach can be adapted for patients in general. Drawing on a wealth of case vignettes, the book describes how to apply Problem-Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (PrFPP) to symptoms, personality issues, behavioral problems, and relationship difficulties. It provides novice and experienced clinicians alike with the tools they need to help patients identify problem areas and understand how specific dynamics emerge in different contexts and overlap in contributing to issues. The psychodynamic techniques readers will glean in these pages demonstrate how to rapidly address core difficulties, expanding patients' self-reflective capacities and the identification of their own dynamics--even in the case of short-term interventions.
Download or read book A Neighborhood Politics of Last Resort written by Stephen Danley and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The steep rise in neighborhood associations in post-Katrina New Orleans is commonly presented in starkly positive or negative terms – either romanticized narratives of community influence or dismissals of false consciousness and powerlessness to elite interests. In A Neighborhood Politics of Last Resort Stephen Danley offers a messier and ultimately more complete picture of these groups as simultaneously crucial but tenuous social actors. Through a comparative case study based on extensive fieldwork in post-Katrina New Orleans, Danley follows activists in their efforts to rebuild their communities, while also examining the dark underbelly of NIMBYism ("not in my backyard"), characterized by racism and classism. He elucidates how neighborhood activists were tremendously inspired in their defense of their communities, at times outwitting developers or other perceived threats to neighborhood life, but they could be equally creative in discriminating against potential neighbors and fighting to keep others out of their communities. Considering the plight of grassroots activism in the context of national and global urban challenges, A Neighborhood Politics of Last Resort immerses the reader in the daily minutiae of post-Katrina life to reveal how multiple groups responded to the same crisis with inconsistent and often ad-hoc approaches, visions, and results.

It represents an inquiry into the activities on the semantics side of the pragmatics boundary.
Download or read book Waters of belonging written by Heather Goodall and published by UTS ePRESS. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book arises from Parklands, Culture and Communities, a project which looks at how cultural diversity shapes people's understandings and use of the Georges River and green spaces in Sydney's south west. Culturally diverse uses and views have not often been recognised in Australia in park and green space management models, which tend to be based on Anglo-Celtic 'norms' about nature and recreation. This book focusses on the experiences of four local communities - Aboriginal, Vietnamese, Arabic and Anglo Australians - and their relationships with the river, parks and each other.
Download or read book Case Studies in Needs Assessment written by Darlene F. Russ-Eft and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case Studies in Needs Assessment offers insights about the practice of needs assessment in dynamic, real-world organizations and communities. This book invites both novice and seasoned analysts to look over the shoulders of practitioners, to examine needs assessment practice in action, to grasp the real-world issues that arise, and to understand a variety of needs assessment strategies and challenges. Each case in this book examines the implementation of needs assessment in a specific situation, bridging needs assessment theories and actual practice. The book is organized around five major approaches: knowledge and skill assessment, job and task analysis, competency assessment, strategic needs assessment, and complex needs assessment. The last chapter summarizes lessons learned from all the case studies: it describes the insights and tricks of the trade that Darlene Russ-Eft and Catherine Sleezer gained from commissioning and reviewing these cases.

Following the editors' introduction the book is divided into four parts. The first, on theories of and theoretical perspectives on information structure, includes chapters on focus, topic, and givenness. Part 2 covers a range of current issues in the field, including quantification, dislocation, and intonation, while Part 3 is concerned with experimental approaches to information structure, including language processing and acquisition. The final part contains a series of linguistic case studies drawn from a wide variety of the world's language families. This volume will be the standard guide to current work in information structure and a major point of departure for future research.
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Business and Government written by David Coen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business is one of the major power centres in modern society. The state seeks to check and channel that power so as to serve broader public policy objectives. However, if the way in which business is governed is ineffective or over burdensome, it may become more difficult to achieve desired goals such as economic growth or higher levels of employment. In a period of international economic crisis, the study of how business and government relate to each other in different countries is of more central importance than ever. These relationships have been studied from a number of different disciplinary perspectives - business studies, economics, economic history, law, and political science - and all of these are represented in this handbook. The first part of the book provides an introduction to the ways in which five different disciplines have approached the study of business and government. The second section, on the firm and the state, looks at how these entities interact in different settings, emphasising such phenomena as the global firm and varieties of capitalism. The third section examines how business interacts with government in different parts of the world, including the United States, the EU, China, Japan and South America. The fourth section reviews changing patterns of market governance through a unifying theme of the role of regulation. Business-government relations can play out in divergent ways in different policy and the fifth section examines the contrasts between different key arenas such as competition policy, trade policy, training policy and environmental policy. The volume provides an authoritative overview with chapters by leading authorities on the current state of knowledge of business-government relations, but also points to ways in which this work might be developed in the future, e.g., through a political theory of the firm.
Download or read book Comprehensive Care for People with Epilepsy written by Margarete Pfäfflin and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 2001 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes an approach to diagnosing and treating people with epilepsy (though not confined to this condition) with a view of the patient as an integral human being, comprising both their seizures and the psychical and social situation. This book inquires into every treatment's goals, whilst including the patients' (and their relatives') subjective evaluations and perspectives. This includes early considerations of benefits versus risks for the patient, the ultimate question being what quality of life will be attained and how much independent life and employment will be feasible. Comprehensive Care does not necessarily need to be associated with elevated cost, as many epilepsy centres have enough knowledge, imagination, and staff for this purpose, the problem being how to combine and use existing resources most effectively.
