Cette analyse historique en six chapitres chronologiques va de la fondation de l’Association canadienne-française d’éducation d’Ontario (ACFEO) en 1910 jusqu’à sa disparition et son absorption par l’Assemblée de la francophonie de l’Ontario en 2006. De 1910 à 1927, l’Association joue un rôle déterminant dans la crise du Règlement 17, qui interdit l’enseignement en français dans les écoles de la province. De 1927-1969, l’ACFEO contribue activement à l’avancement de la cause des écoles françaises (ou « bilingues ») de l’Ontario. Entre 1969 et 1982, l’Association, devenue l’« ACFO », travaille aux progrès institutionnels de la collectivité franco-ontarienne, tout en essuyant des critiques, voire des dénonciations formulées par plusieurs groupes de militants animés par les idéologies contre-culturelle et participative alors en vogue. Entre 1982 et 1992, l’ACFO se redéfinit pour s’adapter à la transformation de l’espace politique de l’Ontario français, ainsi qu’à la fragmentation de son champ idéologique sous l’impulsion de plus en plus irrépressible des régionalismes identitaires et de l’arrivée de groupes ethnoculturels issus de l’immigration francophone. Les années 1992-2006 sont les dernières de l’ACFO, qui ne peut se relever de la crise de légitimité qui la mine depuis la fin des années 1970. Ce livre est publié en français. - The French-Canadian Association of Ontario (ACFO) has been the main political voice person for the Franco-Ontarian community in the 20th century. The first chapter (1910-1927) examines the first years of the Association and delves into the pivotal role it played during the debate surrounding Regulation 17, which was designed to prevent French-language schooling in the province. From 1927-1969, the ACFEO actively contributed to the advancement of French (or “bilingual”) schools in Ontario. From 1969-1982, the Association, now called ACFO, played a key role in the institutional progress of the Franco-Ontarian community, amidst much criticism and accusations made by militants inspired by the counter-culture and participative ideologies of the day. From 1982 to 1992, ACFO redefined itself in order to adapt to an evolving political situation in l’Ontario français, as well as to the fragmentation of its ideology as regional identities took shape to a new ethnocultural reality in the wake of francophone immigration. The years from 1992 to 2006 were the Association’s last, as it became unable to overcome a legitimacy crisis that had been undermining it since the end of the 1970s. Book excerpt: By the late 1950s Canada's Francophone and Acadian minority communities were in rapid decline. Demographic, economic, socio-cultural, institutional, and political factors that had sustained both the concept and the reality of French Canada for well over a century were being eliminated or transformed at an unprecedented rate. To survive, these beleaguered minority communities set out to conquer the challenges of rebuilding their provincial and national organizations, training a new generation of leaders, redefining their respective provincial and national identities, elaborating new political and constitutional policies and strategies for survival and expansion, and then defending and securing full implementation of these policies and strategies. growth of their communities, revitalized Francophone organizations and leaders lobbied for constitutional entrenchment of official bilingualism and of a mandated Charter right to education in their own language, including the right to governance over their own schools and school boards. Having achieved their objectives in the 1982 Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Francophone provincial and national leaders learned the techniques of micro-constitutional politics to convince the Ontario, Alberta, and Manitoba provincial governments to implement full and unfettered school governance by and for Francophone minority communities. a collectivist and remedial interpretation to the Charter's official language minority education rights section 23. The Canadian government assisted the Francophone minority in two ways: it made funds available to Francophone organizations and parents via the Court Challenges program and it signed lucrative financial agreements with the provinces to help defray the additional costs of establishing French-language schools and school boards. While the Francophone minority communities were pursuing implementation of their section 23 Charter rights, they found themselves drawn into the mega-constitutional negotiations and ratification procedures surrounding the controversial Meech Lake Constitutional Accord, 1987-90, and the omnibus Charlottetown Consensus Report, 1990-92. During the Quebec/Provincial Round, their Charter rights remained intact when the Meech Lake Accord failed to obtain ratification. conception of a pan-Canadian cultural and linguistic duality which helped minimize the constitutional and political impact of the Quebec government's insistence upon a territorial conception of duality, that is, an asymmetrical Canada/Quebec federation. When Canadians rejected the Charlottetown deal, neither conception achieved formal constitutional recognition. Nevertheless, Canada's Francophone minority communities were regenerated by the intertwined developments of constitutional renewal and their winning of school governance. A new, vigorous Francophone pan-Canadian national community emerged, one capable of ensuring the survival of its constituents communities well into the 21st century.

Increasingly these homes were in suburban subdivisions, whose pleasures and possibilities for women Veronica Strong-Boag reconsiders. Joan Sangster reminds us that wage-earning mothers were numerous in the fifties and sixties, and through a juxtaposition of their own stories with contemporary studies tells much about these self-denying women's lives. Franca Iacovetta discusses the experiences of immigrant and refugee women in northwestern and south-central Ontario, experiences that were interpreted through their starkly different European wartime memories. Based upon her work among the rural women of southwestern Ontario, Nora Cebotarev charts the changes that transformed farm families and finances from the sixties to the eighties. Ester Reiter compares the recollections of women who had worked together during the 1960s in an auto parts plant in the Niagara Peninsula with contemporary newspaper accounts of a strike, and leads us into a complex narrative of gender and militancy. Nancy Adamson reconsiders the diversity of feminist organizing within the province over the decades since second-wave feminism began; she tracks the different needs and paths that brought women to the women's liberation movement and the ways in which their feminist analysis arose from their experience as community activists. Linda Cardinal writes about Franco-Ontarian women, charting the ways in which feminist activists challenged and were challenged as they worked with traditional farm and church-based women's groups in northern and eastern Ontario. Marlene Brant Castellano and Janice Hill introduce us to four aboriginal women: Edna Manitowabi, Jeannette Corbiere Lavell, Sylvia Maracle, and Emily Faries, whose work has been to reclaim and build upon the knowledge and responsibilities long entrusted to the women of Ontario's First Nations.
