Book excerpt: In 1904, Macaulay described the Hilbert function of the intersection of two plane curve branches: It is the sum of a sequence of functions of simple form. This monograph describes the structure of the tangent cone of the intersection underlying this symmetry. Iarrobino generalizes Macaulay's result beyond complete intersections in two variables to Gorenstein Artin algebras in an arbitrary number of variables. He shows that the tangent cone of a Gorenstein singularity contains a sequence of ideals whose successive quotients are reflexive modules. Applications are given to determining the multiplicity and orders of generators of Gorenstein ideals and to problems of deforming singular mapping germs. Also included are a survey of results concerning the Hilbert function of Gorenstein Artin algebras and an extensive bibliography.

The first two chapters are introductory, and focus on binary forms and Waring's problem. Then the author's recent work is presented mainly on the representation of forms in three or more variables as sums of powers of relatively few linear forms. The methods used are drawn from seemingly unrelated areas of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, including the theories of determinantal varieties, of classifying spaces of Gorenstein-Artin algebras, and of Hilbert schemes of zero-dimensional subschemes. Of the many concrete examples given, some are calculated with the aid of the computer algebra program "Macaulay", illustrating the abstract material. The final chapter considers open problems. This book will be of interest to graduate students, beginning researchers, and seasoned specialists. Prerequisite is a basic knowledge of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry.

Book excerpt: During late June and early July of 1987 a three week program (dubbed "microprogram") in Commutative Algebra was held at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkeley. The intent of the microprogram was to survey recent major results and current trends in the theory of commutative rings, especially commutative Noetherian rings. There was enthusiastic international participation. The papers in this volume, some of which are expository, some strictly research, and some a combination, reflect the intent of the program. They give a cross-section of what is happening now in this area. Nearly all of the manuscripts were solicited from the speakers at the conference, and in most instances the manuscript is based on the conference lecture. The editors hope that they will be of interest and of use both to experts and neophytes in the field. The editors would like to express their appreciation to the director of MSRI, Professor Irving Kaplansky, who first suggested the possibility of such a conference and made the task of organization painless. Book excerpt: At first, this volume was intended to be an investigation of symbolic blow-up rings for prime ideals defining curve singularities. The motivation for that has come from the recent 3-dimensional counterexamples to Cowsik's question, given by the authors and Watanabe: it has to be helpful, for further researches on Cowsik's question and a related problem of Kronecker, to generalize their methods to those of a higher dimension. However, while the study was progressing, it proved apparent that the framework of Part I still works, not only for the rather special symbolic blow-up rings but also in the study of Rees algebras R(F) associated to general filtrations F = {F[subscript]n} [subscript]n [subscript][set membership symbol][subscript bold]Z of ideals. This observation is closely explained in Part II of this volume, as a general ring-theory of Rees algebras R(F). We are glad if this volume will be a new starting point for the further researchers on Rees algebras R(F) and their associated graded rings G(F).

Book excerpt: In the fall of 1992 I was invited by Professor Changho Keem to visit Seoul National University and give a series of talks. I was asked to write a monograph based on my talks, and the result was published by the Global Analysis Research Center of that University in 1994. The monograph treated deficiency modules and liaison theory for complete intersections. Over the next several years I continually thought of improvements and additions that I would like to make to the manuscript, and at the same time my research led me in directions that gave me a fresh perspective on much of the material, especially in the direction of liaison theory. This re sulted in a dramatic change in the focus of this manuscript, from complete intersections to Gorenstein ideals, and a substantial amount of additions and revisions. It is my hope that this book now serves not only as an introduction to a beautiful subject, but also gives the reader a glimpse at very recent developments and an idea of the direction in which liaison theory is going, at least from my perspective. One theme which I have tried to stress is the tremendous amount of geometry which lies at the heart of the subject, and the beautiful interplay between algebra and geometry. Whenever possible I have given remarks and examples to illustrate this interplay, and I have tried to phrase the results in as geometric a way as possible.

Friedlander and Mazur describe some foundational aspects of ``Lawson homology'' for complex projective algebraic varieties, a homology theory defined in terms of homotopy groups of spaces of algebraic cycles. Attention is paid to methods of group completing abelian topological monoids. The authors study properties of Chow varieties, especially in connection with algebraic correspondences relating algebraic varieties. Operations on Lawson homology are introduced and analysed. These operations lead to a filtration on the singular homology of algebraic varieties, which is identified in terms of correspondences and related to classical filtrations of Hodge and Grothendieck.

When such a description is possible locally around every point, by means of analytic inequalities varying with the point, the set is called semianalytic. If one single system of strict inequalities is enough, either globally or locally at every point, the set is called basic. The topic of this work is the relationship between these two notions. Namely, Andradas and Ruiz describe and characterize, both algebraically and geometrically, the obstructions for a basic semianalytic set to be basic semialgebraic. Then they describe a special family of obstructions that suffices to recognize whether or not a basic semianalytic set is basic semialgebraic. Finally, they use the preceding results to discuss the effect on basicness of birational transformations.
