This book analyzes the anticipatory regimes of making multiple babies. With archival documents, participant observation, in-depth interviews, and registry data, this book traces the global and local governance of the assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) used to tackle multiple pregnancy since the 1970s, highlighting the early promotion of single embryo transfer in Belgium and Japan and the making of the world’s most lenient guidelines in Taiwan.

Book Law Policy and Reproductive Autonomy

Download or read book Law Policy and Reproductive Autonomy written by Erin Nelson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive choices are at once the most private and intimate decisions we make in our lives and undeniably also among the most public. Reproductive decision making takes place in a web of overlapping concerns - political and ideological, socio-economic, health and health care - all of which engage the public and involve strongly held opinions and attitudes about appropriate conduct on the part of individuals and the state. Law, Policy and Reproductive Autonomy examines the idea of reproductive autonomy, noting that in attempting to look closely at the contours of the concept, we begin to see some uncertainty about its meaning and legal implications - about how to understand reproductive autonomy and how to value it. Both mainstream and feminist literature about autonomy contribute valuable insights into the meaning and implications of reproductive autonomy. The developing feminist literature on relational autonomy provides a useful starting point for a contextualised conception of reproductive autonomy that creates the opportunity for meaningful exercise of reproductive choice. With a contextualised approach to reproductive autonomy as a backdrop, the book traces aspects of the regulation of reproduction in Canadian, English, US and Australian law and policy, arguing that not all reproductive decisions necessarily demand the same level of deference in law and policy, and making recommendations for reform.

Book Perfecting Pregnancy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Isabel Karpin
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2012-03-30
  • ISBN : 1107376718
  • Pages : 395 pages

Download or read book Perfecting Pregnancy written by Isabel Karpin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prenatal and preimplantation testing technologies have offered unprecedented access to information about the genetic and congenital makeup of our prospective progeny. Future developments such as preconception testing, non-intrusive prenatal testing and more extensive preimplantation testing promise to increase that access further still. The result may be greater reproductive choice, but it also increases the burden on women and men to avail themselves of these technologies in order to avoid having a child with a disability. The overwhelming question for legislators has been whether and, if so, how to regulate the use of these technologies in the face of compelling but seemingly contradictory claims about the advancement of reproductive choice and the dangers of eugenic or discriminatory effects. This book examines the evolution of this legislative oversight across a number of jurisdictions and explores the tensions and ambiguities that inform these laws.

Book A Question of Adoption

Download or read book A Question of Adoption written by Anne Else and published by Bridget Williams Books. This book was released on 2023-02-27 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Question of Adoption gives a richly detailed, immensely readable account of the ideology and practice of closed stranger adoption in New Zealand, from pregnancy through to the final adoption order and its aftermath. Anne Else’s scrupulous, moving narrative explores social and moral attitudes towards ‘unmarried mothers’, ‘unwanted children’ and ‘childless couples’ during the 1950s and 1960s. She shows how the resulting system took shape, how it worked (or failed to work), and its lifelong effects on everyone involved, then sets out how and why change began to occur. This new e-book edition, written with Maria Haenga-Collins, includes seven ground-breaking new chapters providing a comprehensive account of creating and transferring children through the related processes of adoption, state care, donor conception and surrogacy. It details how so many Māori children were and still are cut off from their whānau and whakapapa through adoption and state care, both stemming from racist colonial ideology, and how the Adoption Act 1955 came to be seen as glaringly at odds with contemporary concepts of children’s rights and best interests. It examines New Zealand’s complex history of using ‘third parties’ to create children through reproductive technology, and the lengthy unresolved debates over regulation. The final chapter looks at local and global risks now facing human reproduction, connection, and reproductive justice.
