Book The assistant soccer coach

Download or read book The assistant soccer coach written by Denis Silva Puig and published by Wanceulen Editorial S.L.. This book was released on 2020-06-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assistant soccer coach has existed for decades, and is a standard figure within the coaching staff, with specific roles, functions and responsibilities. However, I find it strange that nobody has yet described this profession formally. I used to only be a head coach, until one day I was proposed to be the assistant coach of U18 team of FC Barcelona. That is when I started thinking about writing this book, moved by my desire to continue learning. If I wanted to train in my new role I could only do it by asking others and observing training sessions. But I was missing one of the pillars that has forever supported my training: studying and reading. With this book I hope to cover that lack of information. The book is divided into two parts: the first is based on describing the assistant coach in professional soccer and I have not found a more practical way to do it than through interviews with assistant coaches. Each interviewee has contributed his experiences from working with the most recognized soccer coaches: I am talking about people who have worked with Vicente del Bosque, Ernesto Valverde, Luis Enrique, Pep Guardiola, Mauricio Pochettino, Sergio González, Quique Sánchez Flores, and Paulo Sousa. The second part of the book is related to Youth soccer, which I have experienced in clubs like Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona. I propose the role of the assistant coach working in Youth soccer to be more formative and educational than what is currently given, and I want to direct their effort towards two dimensions: the team's sporting performance (which the vast majority do) and the individualized analysis of the young player (which very few do). This second dimension is described in the last chapter, to demonstrate a new vision of assistant coaches in Youth soccer, who in my view have to dedicate their time to improving the players as an athlete and as a person in a more personalized and integral way.

Book Head Coaches Perceptions on the the Selection and Development of the Assistant Coach

Download or read book Head Coaches Perceptions on the the Selection and Development of the Assistant Coach written by Scott Rathwell and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Elite level coaches spend a considerable amount of time creating a vision, establishing a seasonal plan, training, and working with assistant coaches (Côté & Salmela, 1996; Vallée & Bloom, 2005). Expert team sport coaches' ability to work with their assistant coaching staff has been noted as a key element of their success (Bloom, 1997). Assistant coaches' roles include helping with team organization, practice planning, and coaching during competitions (Reynaud, 2005). Research has shown head coaches influence their assistant coaches' behaviours and approaches through mentoring and guidance (Bloom, Durand-Bush, Schinke, & Salmela,1998; Côté, 2006). In football, assistant coaches are particularly important due to large roster sizes and the specialization of playing positions. As a result, head football coaches spend considerable time and effort selecting and developing their assistant coaches. The purpose of the present study was twofold: to examine the criteria head coaches used in selecting their assistant coaches and to examine the career progression, and coaching roles and responsibilities of head assistant football coaches in Canada. Semi structured open ended interviews were conducted with 6 successful Canadian head University football coaches who were identified by a panel of experts familiar with this sport. The sample of coaches won numerous coaching awards (e.g., coach of the year), had team success (e.g., winning Vanier Cup), and were recognized for strong programs in both the classroom and their communities. Head coaches looked for assistants who cared about their athletes, had important personal values concerning loyalty and education, and possessed strong leadership skills. In addition, head coaches chose assistants who possessed a large base of football knowledge from their success as both an athlete and as an assistant coach. In addition, they described the importance of hiring assistant coaches who had different areas of expertise from their own. These results represent one of the first empirical accounts of the knowledge used by head coaches for selecting assistant coaches. In addition, this study represents new information on the primary roles and responsibilities of head assistant coaches. These results will be of interest and benefit to both head coaches and assistant coaches." --

Book The Assistant Coach s Guide to Coaching

Download or read book The Assistant Coach s Guide to Coaching written by Scott Rosberg and published by . This book was released on 2022-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assistant coaches are the unsung heroes of any team. All too often, their impact and importance go unnoticed. While head coaches receive the majority of the attention, assistant coaches are right there-side by side with their head coaches-helping to guide their teams to the success they seek. Most head coaches fully understand how fortunate they are to have great assistants on their staffs. They also understand that how well they and their assistant coaches navigate their relationships and deal with one another has a major impact on their programs. Unfortunately, not much has been written about these relationships-until now. "The Assistant Coach's Guide to Coaching" is Scott Rosberg's companion book to his book, "A Head Coach's Guide for Working with Assistants." In that book, Rosberg discussed how head coaches must work with their assistant coaches to develop the success they seek for their teams and programs. In this book, he shifts his attention to the assistant coaches and the impact that they have on that success. He focuses on such things as:Why Coach?Roles of Assistant CoachesCharacteristics of Good Assistant CoachesResponsibilities of Assistant CoachesAssistant Coaches Becoming Head CoachesWhile both books are filled with important information for each group of coaches, "The Assistant Coach's Guide to Coaching" is written to help assistant coaches do all that they must do to help their teams and programs become the best they are capable of becoming. If you are an assistant coach-or considering becoming one-this book will help guide you in this important role on your coaching journey.

Book Career Progression Roles Responsibilities and Relationships of Successful Full time Assistant Coaches in Canadian University Football

Download or read book Career Progression Roles Responsibilities and Relationships of Successful Full time Assistant Coaches in Canadian University Football written by Charles-Antoine Sinotte and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Coaches play a crucial role in the development of athletes of all age and ability levels. In order to fulfil their numerous roles, coaches rely on their support staff for assistance. Gilbert and Trudel (2004) noted that assistant coaches are involved in player evaluations, competition strategies, and the organization and planning of practices. In football, assistant coaches are particularly important due to large roster sizes and the specialization of playing positions. In Canadian University football, most coaching staffs have up to nine assistant coaches in addition to the head coach and three coordinators. Additionally, it is not uncommon for teams to have four or more of their football coaches hired on a full-time basis. Despite the important role of assistant coaches, the topic has been underrepresented in the coaching science literature. The purpose of the current study was to explore the career progression, roles, responsibilities, and relationships of full-time head assistant coaches in Canadian University football. Semi-structured open-ended interviews were conducted with six successful Canadian University football assistant coaches who had been serving in this position for a minimum of five years and who were recommended by a panel of experts familiar with this sport as among the best in their profession. According to the participants, their athletic careers helped them acquire both the knowledge and access that led to an assistant coaching position in Canadian University football. Once they started coaching, their progression was facilitated by attending various coaching clinics and interacting with professional coaches on a regular basis. A large part of their roles and responsibilities related to their appointment as unit coordinators (offence, defence, or special teams). Additionally, development and implementation of the team's vision along with involvement in the recruiting process of prospective student-athletes were all described as key elements of the job. The participants also explained the key relational aspects of their jobs with student-athletes, the head coach, and other members of the coaching staff. In sum, these results represent one of the first empirical accounts of the career progression, roles, responsibilities, and relationships of assistant coaches in team sports from the perspective of the assistant coach. The outcomes could lead to curriculum advancements of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) with regards to the development and coaching responsibilities of assistant coaches." --

Book Stop Competing and Start Winning

Download or read book Stop Competing and Start Winning written by Beth Launiere and published by . This book was released on 2020-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pairing of a business consultant with a Division I head coach may seem unusual, but management consulting has many lessons to bring to coaching. Conversations between friends connected by their love of volleyball developed into innovative ideas about how coaches can run the "business" component of their program, stay connected with their players, and elevate their team's success. Over the past five years, the authors have worked together to bring select concepts and tools from the world of business into the University of Utah's volleyball program. We have presented our approach to numerous coaches' groups, and, based on the positive feedback from coaches at all levels, we have decided to collect these concepts and tools into this book. Many coaches share a similar career trajectory. They started as players, entered coaching as a volunteer assistant coach or as a director of operations, earned promotion to assistant coach, and, eventually, were hired into a head coaching role. What they learned along the way depended on who they had to learn from. If they were fortunate to learn from great thinkers and communicators, they were well prepared when their turn came to run a program. If they had less capable teachers, they had to learn by trial and error and by developing on their own their approach to managing a program. But no matter how effective the coaches they trained under, they learned lessons from inside the world of their sport. Because of this, many coaches have similar bodies of knowledge. A given coach may be better or worse than their competition, but they are all drawing from the same storehouse of ideas.Winning as a coach requires incorporating ideas wherever you can find them and blending those which make sense to you into your program to make it more effective and more efficient. If you can access relevant ideas and tools from outside of coaching (whether from business, politics, healthcare, charity, volunteer work, or other fields), you will provide yourself with lasting competitive advantages.
