Book Assignment of the Glass Transition Temperature Using Dielectric Analysis

Download or read book Assignment of the Glass Transition Temperature Using Dielectric Analysis written by SA. Bidstrup and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of dielectric analysis for the determination of the glass transition temperature for polymers is reviewed. Both a sharp increase in the permittivity and the dielectric loss peak have been correlated with the glass transition. Dielectric data for an epoxy sin and Polyvinylchloride are presented and compared with data obtained by differential anning calorimetry (DSC). The dielectric glass transition approaches the DSC glass transition as the frequency of the dielectric measurement is decreased. The effects of contact resistance and moisture on the dielectric measurement are also discussed.

Book Assignment of Glass Transition Temperatures Using Thermomechanical Analysis

Download or read book Assignment of Glass Transition Temperatures Using Thermomechanical Analysis written by CM. Earnest and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of thermomechanical analysis (TMA) as a tool for assignment of glass transition temperatures, Tg, is discussed in this paper. An attempt to address the minimum requirements of TMA instrumentation necessary for Tg assignments is included. The subject of temperature calibration of the TMA instrument, which is a prerequisite for any temperature of transition assignment, is discussed. Methodology is offered for using the TMA nstrument in the expansion mode for Tg assignments. In addition, TMA methodology mploying a flat-tipped penetration probe for the assignment of the softening temperature, Ts, is also given here. For most amorphous materials, Ts is very close to the Tg value assigned by expansion TMA or differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Book An Introduction to Glass Transition

Download or read book An Introduction to Glass Transition written by Roberta Ramirez and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Glass Transition opens with a comparison of entropy function of temperature dependence with configurational entropy, which was published by various authors and found almost the same temperature dependence with overlap. From the dependence of the logarithm of configurational entropy vs. the logarithm of temperature, the authors suggest that it is possible to successfully predict the relations between the values of m for different glass formers.Following this, microscopic local dynamics were analyzed by way of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations through the conformational transition behavior across a wide range of temperatures. The glass transition temperature may be predicted through the intersection of separate temperature dependences. Such local dynamics were found to become gradually heterogeneous when the temperature went down close to the glassy state. The closing chapter provides a brief summary of the studies relevant to glass transitions in well-defined lipids systems such as anhydrous and/or water mixed systems. Then, some current problems and future problems are described.

Book Assigning the Glass Transition Temperature in Oriented Poly ethylene Terephthalate

Download or read book Assigning the Glass Transition Temperature in Oriented Poly ethylene Terephthalate written by MJ. Moscato and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermoplastics like poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) can be melt processed into sheet and film formats for a variety of applications. Fabrication of these formats often involves application of a drawing process which can include drafting, tentering, heat setting, detentering, and heat relaxation. These various components add a thermomechanical history to the PET that will influence the glass transition. Thermomechanical analysis (TMA) in both the compressive mode and the tensile mode along with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques have been applied to a series of seven PET films generated using different drawing processes applied with an Iwamoto Biaxial Stretcher on extruded sheet from a single source. These measurements were undertaken to assign a glass transition temperature for each film. The assigned temperature ranged between 70°C and 94°C. Orientation and heat setting increased the temperature assigned as Tg while detentering both increased and lowered Tg on a direction-specific basis. Both the measurement technique and the assignment protocol employed to determine Tg contributed to differences in the assigned value. DSC results suggested the presence of two amorphous domains (mobile and constrained) in the film oriented uniaxially without constraint. TMA data demonstrated the assigned Tg may be direction specific and not a bulk property in oriented PET films.

Book Glass Transition of a Liquid Crystal Polymer

Download or read book Glass Transition of a Liquid Crystal Polymer written by B. Cassel and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A commercially available liquid crystal polymer system having a very weak glass transition is investigated in order to illustrate the special problems of measurement and interpretation inherent in high-sensitivity Tg measurement. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, and dynamic mechanical analysis were employed over the temperature region from ambient to 175°C. A transition between 75 and 125°C with a midpoint around 100°C was detected by most techniques. The use of the maximum in the derivative of the measured signal as the primary assignment of the glass transition temperature is recommended. The results are discussed with reference to other literature on this polymer system.
