Book Archaeology and Economic Development

Download or read book Archaeology and Economic Development written by Paul Burtenshaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nowhere in archaeology is the gap between theory and practice more evident than in its ambivalent engagement with economic development. This groundbreaking volume assembles practicing archaeologists, economists, and NGO officials in an extensive exploration of the theoretical, practical and ethical issues raised by archaeologists' use of cultural heritage to support economic development. The first chapters consider the problem of articulating the value of tangible and intangible heritage when economic measures alone are inadequate. Subsequent chapters present regional perspectives on archaeology and development, and present a host of case studies from around the globe that describe archaeologists' development projects, including some that are successful and others that are less so. These studies both suggest best practices in the implementation of development projects and illuminate the obstacles to success created by political conflict and competing human needs. Ethical issues and practical considerations converge in chapters that explore the role that members of local communities should play in the design, management and governance of archaeological and heritage resources. In this volume, archaeologists and heritage professionals will encounter a thought-provoking international discourse concerning the path forward for archaeology as the field engages with economic development."

Book Earth Observation Remote Sensing and Geoscientific Ground Investigations for Archaeological and Heritage Research

Download or read book Earth Observation Remote Sensing and Geoscientific Ground Investigations for Archaeological and Heritage Research written by Deodato Tapete and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects 15 papers written by renowned scholars from across the globe that showcase the forefront research in Earth observation (EO), remote sensing (RS), and geoscientific ground investigations to study archaeological records and cultural heritage. Archaeologists, anthropologists, geographers, remote sensing, and archaeometry experts share their methodologies relying on a wealth of techniques and data including, but not limited to: very high resolution satellite images from optical and radar space-borne sensors, air-borne surveys, geographic information systems (GIS), archaeological fieldwork, and historical maps. A couple of the contributions highlight the value of noninvasive and nondestructive laboratory analyses (e.g., neutron diffraction) to reconstruct ancient manufacturing technologies, and of geological ground investigations to corroborate hypotheses of historical events that shaped cultural landscapes. Case studies encompass famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites (e.g., the Nasca Lines in Peru), remote and yet-to-discover archaeological areas in tropical forests in central America, European countries, south Asian changing landscapes, and environments which are arid nowadays but were probably full of woody vegetation in the past. Finally, the reader can learn about the state-of-the-art of education initiatives to train site managers in the use of space technologies in support of their activities, and can understand the legal aspects involved in the application of EO and RS to address current challenges of African heritage preservation.

Papers highlight a series of methodological challenges across a diverse set of environmental regimes, using both tried-and-true and in-development solutions for archaeological prospection, environment characterization and heritage management. Contributors showcase innovative theoretical approaches and methods in data collection and analysis that contribute to new insights, which would have been inaccessible through traditional fieldwork alone. This volume presents a discussion of the state of the field as it stands now, and a critical assessment of developments necessary to its survival and is intended to serve as a training model. Major new collection of case studies setting standards and demonstrating applications for the acquisition, manipulation and presentation of complex datasets derived from remote sensing of archaeological sites
