Book Assessment Repair Strategy for Existing Buildings Constructed with Masonry Veneer Steel Stud Walls

Download or read book Assessment Repair Strategy for Existing Buildings Constructed with Masonry Veneer Steel Stud Walls written by T. W. J. Trestain and published by CMHC. This book was released on 1996 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation retained T.W.J. Trestain Structural Engineering to undertake a review of assessment and repair techniques for problem masonry veneer steel stud (MV/SS) walls. This document is intended to define state-of-the-art "good practice" a needed reference point upon which evaluations of deficiencies, renovation strategies and construction methods can be based. Two competing approaches to field investigation are discussed - the medical model versus the technical audit model. Neither approach is sufficient on its own and a blended model is therefore proposed. Methods of gathering field information are discussed including a proposed systematic approach to the review of problem MV/SS walls. The successful diagnosis(es) of problem MV/SS walls requires an understanding of the basic engineering and building science issues. Accordingly, typical MV/SS deficiencies and the consequences associated with those deficiencies are presented. In order to assist the investigator to answer the question "Is it good enough?", a number of analysis tools are proposed along with some suggested decision making criteria. The analysis tools include reduced Limit States Design load factors, conventional analysis, finite element analysis and full-scale field testing. The basic analysis routine for the finite element program was developed as part of another CMHC project and then customized with a number of features specifically for this project. Lastly, a compendium of possible maintain or restore strategies is presented for problem MV/SS walls. Included is a section on economic analysis which provides guidance on the optimum course of action that best meets the needs of public safety, building performance and the financial position of the building owners.

Book Renovation Strategies for Brick Veneer Steel Stud Wall Construction Task 2

Download or read book Renovation Strategies for Brick Veneer Steel Stud Wall Construction Task 2 written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a test program to establish and document the performance of retrofit tie systems for brick veneer/steel stud walls. Specific objectives of the program were: to evaluate and assess the capabilities of four retrofit tie systems, two suited for retrofit from the exterior and two for installation working solely from the interior; to identify and apply the relevant performance requirements to the four systems; and to discuss the issues involved in connecting the brick veneer to the steel stud framing by means of ties, especially from a repair or retrofit perspective. The test program involved 435 tests of individual tie-stud connections which were assessed with respect to structural performance, specifically structural safety and serviceability. The test program included assessment of the influence of stud deformation and of cyclic loading. Recommendations are provided regarding the choice of an appropriate supplementary tie system.

Book Renovation Strategies for Brick Veneer Steel Stud Wall Construction Task 4

Download or read book Renovation Strategies for Brick Veneer Steel Stud Wall Construction Task 4 written by C. I. Wegner and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dinal tie comprises a threaded steel rod with a collapsible fastener that provides a means for attachment of a steel stud to brick veneer. The tie was developed in response to the failure of some brick tie systems and can be installed through existing masonry veneer and attached to the steel stud backup without removing any existing veneer, thus providing the potential for use in retrofit applications. This report describes tests conducted to determine the structural capabilities of the Dinal tie to steel stud connection and to develop likely design values. The test program included both tension (pullout) and compression tests on two different set-ups, each with different degrees of stud restraint. Service load considerations such as the effect of cyclic loading, the magnitude of the initial stiffness, and the contribution of secondary displacements including the local deformation of the steel stud are quantified, and safety considerations are also taken into account. Tentative service load design strengths are presented along with minimum pullout stiffness values.

This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After an initial field study of the performance and durability of brick veneer/steel stud wall systems (BV/SS), CMHC commissioned a series of building science experiments and theoretical studies to see how deficiencies observed in the field could be avoided in future BV/SS designs. This guide summarizes the findings of several of these projects and shows how to apply the results. Subjects dealt with in the guide include: rain penetration control; condensation control; thermal bridging; construction sequencing; quality control; testing and commissioning; and maintenance and repair. Construction details (in DWG and DXF format) and the master specifications for lateral loadbearing steel studs (in WordPerfect 5 and ASCI 1 text) are provided on diskette and can be copied and modified for project use. Measurements are provided in both metric and imperial versions.
