Download or read book Assessment of Tools for Modeling Aircraft Noise in the National Parks written by Gregg G. Fleming and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2005-03 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Park Service (NPS) jointly requested that the Federal Interagency Committee on Aviation Noise (FICAN)“provide advice on some matters related to the measurement and assessment of the effects of aircraft noise due to overflights of units of the National Park System”. FICAN findings and recommendations are included.

Book Analysis of Modeling Cumulative Noise from Simultaneous Flights

Download or read book Analysis of Modeling Cumulative Noise from Simultaneous Flights written by Eric R. Boeker and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the first of two volumes of the report on modeling cumulative noise from simultaneous flights. This volume includes: an overview of the time compression algorithms used to model simultaneous aircraft; reviewed summary of a preliminary study (which includes updated measured data); an expanded analysis of cumulative noise from simultaneous flights for several additional National Parks; and a discussion of the remaining issues and tasks that are recommended be addressed."--Technical report documentation page.

Book Aircraft Source Noise Measurement Studies

Download or read book Aircraft Source Noise Measurement Studies written by U.s. Department of Transportation and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Parks Air Tour Management Act of 2000 (NPATMA)1 calls for the regulation of commercial air tour operations over units of the National Park system, and directs the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), with the cooperation of the National Park Service (NPS), to develop Air Tour Management Plans (ATMPs) for all National Parks with commercial air tours*.Currently, approximately 85 parks will need ATMPs. The Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) is providing technical support to the ATMP program. An important element of this support is the computer modeling of air tour aircraft, which will be used in the assessmentpotential noise impacts to the National Park resources.

Book Protecting National Park Soundscapes

Download or read book Protecting National Park Soundscapes written by John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's national parks provide a wealth of experiences to millions of people every year. What visitors see-landscapes, wildlife, cultural activities-often lingers in memory for life. And what they hear adds a dimension that sight alone cannot provide. Natural sounds can dramatically enhance visitors' experience of many aspects of park environments. In some settings, such as the expanses of Yellowstone National Park, they can even be the best way to enjoy wildlife, because animals can be heard at much greater distances than they can be seen. Sounds can also be a natural complement to natural scenes, whether the rush of water over a rocky streambed or a ranger's explanation of a park's history. In other settings, such as the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, sounds are the main reason for visiting a park. The acoustical environment is also important to the well-being of the parks themselves. Many species of wildlife depend on their hearing to find prey or avoid predators. If they cannot hear, their survival is jeopardized-and the parks where they live may in turn lose part of their natural heritage. For all these reasons it is important to be aware of noise (defined as unwanted sound, and in this case usually generated by humans or machinery), which can degrade the acoustical environment, or soundscape, of parks. Just as smog smudges the visual horizon, noise obscures the listening horizon for both visitors and wildlife. This is especially true in places, such as remote wilderness areas, where extremely low sound levels are common. The National Park Service (NPS) has determined that park facilities, operations, and maintenance activities produce a substantial portion of noise in national parks and thus recognizes the need to provide park managers with guidance for protecting the natural soundscape from such noise. Therefore, the focus of the workshop was to define what park managers can do to control noise from facilities, operations, and maintenance, and not on issues such as the effects of noise on wildlife, noise metrics, and related topics. To aid in this effort, NPS joined with the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and with the US Department of Transportation's John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center to hold a workshop to examine the challenges and opportunities facing the nation's array of parks. Entitled "Protecting National Park Soundscapes: Best Available Technologies and Practices for Reducing Park- Generated Noise," the workshop took place October 3-4, 2012, at NPS's Natural Resource Program Center in Fort Collins, Colorado. Protecting National Park Soundscapes is a summary of the workshop.

Book Proceedings of the Workshop on Human Response to Aviation Noise in Protected Natural Areas

Download or read book Proceedings of the Workshop on Human Response to Aviation Noise in Protected Natural Areas written by John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "According to Section 808 of the National Parks Air Tour Management Act of 2000, any methodology adopted by a Federal agency to assess air tour noise in any unit of the national park system shall be based on reasonable scientific methods. Therefore, the FAA and NPS share a mutual interest to develop scientifically defensible methodology to quantitatively assess noise impacts from aviation in National Parks. Although the agencies could pursue wholly independent research programs, public investment in research will realize the highest return if the FAA and NPS mutually develop a prioritized list of research topics and a coordinated strategy for stimulating this research. / To date, several studies have been funded by these agencies which strive to define the relationship between aircraft noise 'dose' and an associated human response (dose-response) gathered from park visitor surveys. Following the example of residential dose-response relationships, the analyses of the data from the park visitor studies focused on evaluating relatively simple functional forms of noise doses and mediating variables as predictors of visitor responses in surveys. However, research results suggest that a simple model does not adequately characterize human responses to noise in protected natural and cultural areas, such as National Parks. In addition to visitor responses to noise as measured by annoyance or acceptability, research is needed to investigate physiological responses to noise events and the degree to which noise degrades opportunities to perceive the sounds of the park."--Purpose of the Workshop (p. 3).
