Book Using Respondent driven Sampling Entertainment Education and Social Media to Reduce HIV in the African American Community

Download or read book Using Respondent driven Sampling Entertainment Education and Social Media to Reduce HIV in the African American Community written by Susan L. Davies and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HIV transmission rates are disproportionately high among African Americans in the Deep South. To address this, the Community Influences Transitions in Youth Health (CITY Health II) study focused on decreasing HIV transmission rates among 18- to 25-year-old African American emerging adults living in resource-poor southern urban communities. CITY Health II is a 5-year HIV prevention study that tests the efficacy of a peer-driven entertainment education intervention compared with an attention-control intervention using a cluster randomized trial design. We enlisted nine musicians and groups to help us create an entertaining and educational web-based video series, "The Beat HIVe," for study participants to view on smartphones and share with peers on social media. Videos each consist of a brief question-and-answer session with the artists about central HIV prevention topics, followed by a performance of their original material. Data collection interviews at baseline, 3-month, and 6-month follow-up assessed sociodemographics, risk and protective behaviors, social networks, and peer norms. This case study highlights two novel research methods that bring unique strengths to increase research rigor and feasibility. Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) is a recruitment method that accesses participants' existing social networks to recruit a representative sample from the target population. Timeline Followback is a calendar-based interview method designed to facilitate recall by quantifying specific risk behaviors over time. Outcomes from this study will help to inform optimal ways to reach at-risk populations through education entertainment and peer diffusion to improve sexual health behaviors.

Book The Economy of Collaboration

Download or read book The Economy of Collaboration written by Francesco Ramella and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, the world economy has undergone radical transformations, in part connected to the expansion of the ‘digital economy’, in part to the growing interconnection via the internet of the world of objects and physical processes. This ‘great transformation’ poses the dilemma on the capitalism’s ability to reconcile economic and social value, keeping together economic well-being, social cohesion and political freedom. The Economy of Collaboration can offer a contribution in this direction but requires courageous policies to mediate the various interests at stake, as well as to rethink and make more sustainable its development, by increasing the benefits not only for businesses but also for workers and consumers. In short, to create shared value. This book refers to a mode of organizing the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services based on cooperative relations. The main reference is to activities linked to the digital economy, since they are the emerging forms of a definitely older phenomenon, but which is expanding on an ever-wider scale thanks to new technologies. These collaborative activities can be regulated differently, along a continuum that ranges from the pole of market exchanges to that of generalized reciprocity, with various intermediate mixed forms.

Book Improving Health Research on Small Populations

Download or read book Improving Health Research on Small Populations written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing diversity of population of the United States presents many challenges to conducting health research that is representative and informative. Dispersion and accessibility issues can increase logistical costs; populations for which it is difficult to obtain adequate sample size are also likely to be expensive to study. Hence, even if it is technically feasible to study a small population, it may not be easy to obtain the funding to do so. In order to address the issues associated with improving health research of small populations, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop in January 2018. Participants considered ways of addressing the challenges of conducting epidemiological studies or intervention research with small population groups, including alternative study designs, innovative methodologies for data collection, and innovative statistical techniques for analysis.

Book Evaluating AIDS Prevention Programs

Download or read book Evaluating AIDS Prevention Programs written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1991-02-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With insightful discussion of program evaluation and the efforts of the Centers for Disease Control, this book presents a set of clear-cut recommendations to help ensure that the substantial resources devoted to the fight against AIDS will be used most effectively. This expanded edition of Evaluating AIDS Prevention Programs covers evaluation strategies and outcome measurements, including a realistic review of the factors that make evaluation of AIDS programs particularly difficult. Randomized field experiments are examined, focusing on the use of alternative treatments rather than placebo controls. The book also reviews nonexperimental techniques, including a critical examination of evaluation methods that are observational rather than experimentalâ€"a necessity when randomized experiments are infeasible.

Book The Health of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender People

Download or read book The Health of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender People written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals-often referred to under the umbrella acronym LGBT-are becoming more visible in society and more socially acknowledged, clinicians and researchers are faced with incomplete information about their health status. While LGBT populations often are combined as a single entity for research and advocacy purposes, each is a distinct population group with its own specific health needs. Furthermore, the experiences of LGBT individuals are not uniform and are shaped by factors of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geographical location, and age, any of which can have an effect on health-related concerns and needs. The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People assesses the state of science on the health status of LGBT populations, identifies research gaps and opportunities, and outlines a research agenda for the National Institute of Health. The report examines the health status of these populations in three life stages: childhood and adolescence, early/middle adulthood, and later adulthood. At each life stage, the committee studied mental health, physical health, risks and protective factors, health services, and contextual influences. To advance understanding of the health needs of all LGBT individuals, the report finds that researchers need more data about the demographics of these populations, improved methods for collecting and analyzing data, and an increased participation of sexual and gender minorities in research. The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People is a valuable resource for policymakers, federal agencies including the National Institute of Health (NIH), LGBT advocacy groups, clinicians, and service providers.

Book Feasibility of RDS Effectiveness of Risk reduction counseling and Testing and Factors Associated with Loss to follow up in an Intervention Study for Men who Have Sex with Men in Nanjing

Download or read book Feasibility of RDS Effectiveness of Risk reduction counseling and Testing and Factors Associated with Loss to follow up in an Intervention Study for Men who Have Sex with Men in Nanjing written by Weiming Tang and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Respondent-driven-sampling (RDS) has been recognized as a method for sampling from most hard-to-reach populations. Meanwhile, loss to follow up of the participants in follow up studies usually reduces the validity of the association measured in observational studies, and this problem cannot be overcame through data analysis. Methods: In a cross sectional study in Nanjing city of Jiangsu province of China, 430 MSM were recruited including 9 seeds in 14 weeks of study period using RDS. Information regarding socio-demographic characteristics and sexual risk behavior were collected and testing was done for HIV and syphilis. Duration, completion, participant characteristics and the equilibrium of key factors were used for assessing feasibility of RDS. All the HIV negative participants were followed up at 6, 12 and 18 months to evaluate behavioral changes after counseling to reduce risk behaviors. Logistic regression was performed to identify the factors correlated with loss to follow up. Results: In the study sample, adjusted HIV and syphilis prevalence were 6.6% and 14.6% respectively, whereas HIV incidence was 5.2 per 100 person-years. The incidence was 3.8 during six to 12 months, and 1.1 during 12 to 18 months. Although there was a tendency for recruitment within the same self-identified group, considerable cross-group recruitment was also seen. During the study period, the reported unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) significantly decreased from 60.9% to 42.9%. The proportion of participants who had one or no partner significantly increased from 40.9% to 48.0%. The study also found that some risk behaviors decreased between baseline and 12 months, followed by a slight increase between 12 and 18 months. In addition, loss to follow up for the MSM study in Nanjing was associated with younger age, small social network, lower education, and non-official residence in Jiangsu. Conclusion: RDS was found to be a potential efficient and feasible sampling method for recruiting a diverse sample of MSM in a reasonable time. Reductions in UAI can be achieved through counseling and testing, but may wane over time. The factors correlated with loss-to-follow-up found in of our study may be helpful to increase the retention rate of future cohort studies.

Book Respondent driven Sampling

Download or read book Respondent driven Sampling written by Sunghee Lee and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This entry responds to the ever-increasing demands for data on hard-to-sample populations for which there is no practical solution for sampling. Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) first appeared in the literature in 1997 as an alternative to probability sampling methods for recruiting rare populations. Since then, RDS has attracted vast interest and applied to numerous data collection activities targeting hard-to-reach and elusive populations from migrants to drug users to commercial sex workers around the world. Despite the popularity, the premise of RDS to be a valid tool for inferences is not widely known, and the reality of RDS field work is rarely reported in the literature. This entry provides an overview of RDS as a component in data collection methods from a survey methodology point of view rather than a sampling point of view, as the latter dominates the extant literature. For doing so, it draws on the literature as well as the authors' own data collection experiences to empirically demonstrate points and offer practical options for analyzing RDS data.
