Book excerpt: A survey of literature from academia, industry, and other Government agencies was reviewed to assess the state of the art in flight control technologies as related to the identified adverse conditions. A general state of the art in adaptive flight control is summarized first, followed by an assessment of the state of the art as applicable to 13 identified adverse conditions. The state-of-the-art summaries include technologies not specifically related to flight control, but may serve as inputs to a future flight control algorithm. The adverse conditions were determined as a result of a previous study and can be found in NASA Technical Memorandum entitled "Causal Factors and Adverse Conditions of Aviation Accidents and Incidents Related to Integrated Resilient Aircraft Control." The types of adverse conditions are divided into three separate groups: failure of aircraft system or component, damage to a structure or component, and control upsets related to pilot error or another cause that cannot be regulated by aircraft technology. In general, there were two distinct methods for implementing adaptive flight control systems. In the first method, the system assists the pilot in operating the aircraft in a degraded state by providing additional information on the degradation state of the aircraft and then makes calculations relating to alternative use of controls or alternative maneuvers. The second type of implementation involves no change in the pilot's method of operation in relation to a nominal operating environment. The adaptive control system takes the nominal control inputs given by the pilot, performs calculations based on the degradation state of the aircraft, and sends alternative commands to the vehicle control surfaces and/or propulsion system. This method is very different than the first, as the pilot is not required to alter the operation of the plane due to the degradation. Much more research is being done on failures and degradation of specific components in relation to adaptive control systems. Although component research is important, as it can provide better input data into adaptive control systems, more can be done to advance the state of the art of the actual adaptive control systems. In regards to the two methods of implementing adaptive control, the trend is that the state of the art is moving in the direction of systems in which the pilot operates the aircraft the same in both nominal and off-nominal conditions where the adaptive control system itself alters the commands that go to the control surfaces and propulsion system when operating in an off-nominal state.

Book excerpt: A state-of-the-art computational facility for aircraft flight control design, evaluation, and integration called CONDUIT (Control Designer's Unified Interface) has been developed. This paper describes the CONDUIT tool and case study applications to complex rotary- and fixed- wing fly-by-wire flight control problems. Control system analysis and design optimization methods are presented, including definition of design specifications and system models within CONDUIT, and the multi-objective function optimization (CONSOL-OPTCAD) used to tune the selected design parameters. Design examples are based on flight test programs for which extensive data are available for validation. CONDUIT is used to analyze baseline control laws against pertinent military handling qualities and control system specifications. In both case studies, CONDUIT successfully exploits trade-offs between forward loop and feedback dynamics to significantly improve the expected handling qualities and minimize the required actuator authority. The CONDUIT system provides a new environment for integrated control system analysis and design, and has potential for significantly reducing the time and cost of control system flight test optimization.

Book excerpt: Task Group SCI-26 was formally initiated in 1996, in response to well-publicized and highly visible accidents that had occurred in the latest technology aircraft both in the US and in Europe. These accidents were due to deficiencies in the flight control system designs. Other recent programs had less-well-publicized FCS development problems, with time and cost overruns more the mie than the exception. The Task Group has just published a report, which begins with a review of some examples of flight control problems. They span the history of flight from the time when the practice of flying was preceding theoretical developments up to more recent time when it might be thought that flight control designers "should know better". Then there is a chapter detailing lessons learned from various programs with positive results, which leads into a section detailing a series of recommended best practices. The second part of the report continues with some theoretical aspects. First, there is a discussion of flying qualities criteria, and the current state of the art of "carefree handling" which is related to this symposium. Next there is an extensive discussion of the latest results from research into PIOs, followed by a discussion of modelling and system identification. The Task Group members originally laid out this report to present an assessment of design methods, but no correlation was found between the method used and the problems of the past, or the successes. The theme of the symposium, "Active Control Technology", is interpreted to mean the use of flight control technology to minimize the pilot's workload in accomplishing every mission task. Specifically, it covers a range of applications from tailoring the responses to prevent undesirable characteristics, such as departures or limit exceedances, all the way through to automatic recovery systems that take control away from the pilot.
