Book excerpt: The report presents a comprehensive technical assessment of the effects and effectiveness of the methods used for disposal of wastewaters on the land. Three basic application techniques are considered: Spray irrigation, Overland runoff, and Rapid infiltration. The related ecosystem responses to each are discussed. The report concludes that the product water from such operations can and should approach drinking water-irrigation water standards in quality. Of the three modes, spray irrigation offers the highest degree of reliability and potential longevity. Further definition is required for system capacity for the other two modes. The report not only provides an assessment of the current state of the art but documents the need for work leadint to optimum criteria for design, construction and operation of cost-effective and environmentally compatible systems.
