Book Assessment of the Economic pulping and Pulp Quality Effects of Increased Lodgepole Pine in SPF Chip Mixtures

Download or read book Assessment of the Economic pulping and Pulp Quality Effects of Increased Lodgepole Pine in SPF Chip Mixtures written by Barbara Dalpke and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is part of a series of research papers that explore the biological, social, and economic aspects of British Columbia's mountain pine beetle epidemic. It examines British Columbia's market kraft and mechanical pulps, which are produced from interior spruce, pine and fir (SPF) and are significant for the province's economy. The chips used to produce SPF pulp are a residual material from lumber operations and are traditionally composed of approximately 30% spruce, 65% lodgepole pine and 5% subalpine fir. However, due to the mountain pine beetle epidemic in the province, this balance is subjected to climb to a pine content of 80% to 90% as salvage harvesting of attacked and dead lodgepole pine stands increases. This study quantitatively and qualitatively defines pulp quality changes with changing chip mixture in order to increase understanding of problems that can be anticipated with changing chip quality needs.--Includes text from Government of Canada publications site and from document.

Book Assessing the Influence of Time since death

Download or read book Assessing the Influence of Time since death written by Barbara Dalpke and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is part of a series of research papers that explore the biological, social, and economic aspects of British Columbia's mountain pine beetle (MPB) epidemic. It presents the results of pilot plant Kraft and mechanical pulping trials that were conducted to determine the influence of time-since-death (TSD) of (MPB)-killed lodgepole pine on pulping and pulp quality. Samples included trees of red, grey and late grey attack stages as well as unattacked trees; sample sites were established in three different biogeoclimatic subzones in British Columbia in order to account for natural variability. Prior to pulping, samples were tested for wood and fibre properties as well as chip quality. Kraft and thermomechanical (TMP) pulping parameters were monitored, pulp quality was determined, and sheet structure was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy.--Includes text from document.

  • Author : Sandra Knowles Weller
  • Publisher : Caister Academic Press Limited
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 9781904455769
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Alphaherpesviruses written by Sandra Knowles Weller and published by Caister Academic Press Limited. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alphaherpesviruses are a fascinating group of DNA viruses that includes important human pathogens such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), HSV-2, and varicella-zoster virus (VZV): the causative agents of cold sores, genital ulcerous disease, and chickenpox/shingles, respectively. A key attribute of these viruses is their ability to establish lifelong latent infection in the peripheral nervous system of the host. Such persistence requires subversion of the host's immune system and intrinsic antiviral defense mechanisms. Understanding the mechanisms of the immune evasion and what triggers viral reactivation is a major challenge for today's researchers. This has prompted enormous research efforts into understanding the molecular and cellular biology of these viruses. This up-to-date and comprehensive volume aims to distill the most important research in this area providing a timely overview of the field. Topics covered include: transcriptional regulation, DNA replication, translational control, virus entry and capsid assembly, the role of microRNAs in infection and oncolytic vectors for cancer therapy. In addition there is coverage of virus-host interactions, including apoptosis, subversion of host protein quality control and DNA damage response pathways, autophagy, establishment and reactivation from latency, interferon responses, immunity and vaccine development. Essential reading for everyone working with alphaherpesviruses and of interest to all virologists working on latent infections.
