This book was released on 1993 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report designed to estimate abundance and length composition of Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) in the Nome River (Seward Peninsula, Alaska). And also to estimate the emigration of Dolly Varden from the Nome River and test the hypothesis of spawning or overwintering in the Sinuk, Cripple, Penny, Snake, Nome, Flambeau, Eldorado, Bonanza and Solomon Rivers during 1992.

Book Life history Variability and Mixed stock Analysis of Dolly Varden in the Noatak River

Download or read book Life history Variability and Mixed stock Analysis of Dolly Varden in the Noatak River written by Philip John Joy and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dolly Varden Salvalinus malma in northwest Alaska support vital subsistence fisheries and popular sport fisheries. This study will address a lack of information regarding the diversity of Dolly Varden life histories and the genetic composition of the subsistence harvests in the Noatak River drainage. To address these knowledge gaps this project will 1) use otolith microchemistry to describe life-history variability throughout the drainage and compare lifehistories of present-day spawners and harvests to fish sampled in the early 1980s (DeCicco 1985); and, 2) using mixedstock analysis (MSA) identify the genetic make-up of the harvests as it relates to spawning populations. Otolith samples and genetic material will be collected from the bycatch in the Kotzebue commercial fishery and from the subsistence fisheries in Noatak and Kivalina. Otolith and genetic material will be collected from 9 tributaries of the Noatak River watershed over a 3 year period. Fish will be captured by hook and line, beach seine, and/or gillnets in each of the tributaries. Fish will be sacrificed for otolith collection and have a fin clip removed for genetic analysis. A graduate student at UAF will be responsible for otolith analysis as part of a masters’ thesis and genetic material will be used to determine the stock-of-origin of the harvests.

Courtney and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Arctic Alaska, Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma is highly valued as a subsistence fish; however, little is known about oceanic dispersal or ecology. This study addresses this knowledge gap, by using a fisheries independent method, pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs). In spring of 2012 and 2013, we attached 52 PSATs to Dolly Varden in a river in northwestern Alaska, which flows into the Arctic Ocean, to examine the marine dispersal, behavior and habitat occupancy of this species. Tagged Dolly Varden demonstrated two types of dispersal, including offshore and nearshore dispersal. The offshore type was the first documented northwesterly dispersal and occupancy of Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) areas of the Russian Chukchi Sea. While occupying this area, tagged Dolly Varden demonstrated affinity for the first 5 m of the water column, diel patterns in depth occupancy, and dive depths of up to 50 m, while experiencing a thermal environment of generally 3-7°C. During the nearshore dispersal type, Dolly Varden transited in coastal areas of northwest Alaska, likely returning to their natal rivers to spawn. While in nearshore areas, tagged Dolly Varden always occupied shallow waters (
