Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic significance of boron (B) in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry has been beyond dispute for several decades. Even in the last two decades, the areas where B deficiency limits plant production has grown with increased reports from China, south Asia and southeast Asia. The present volume is reflective of the growing awareness of the significance of low soil B with reports from Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, north, central and southern China, India, Nepal, and the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan contained herein. Boron deficiency also continues to be a problem for crop yield and quality in areas where B deficiency has been known for some time, for example in Germany and the USA. The problem of low soil B is not limited to effects on field crop yield, with papers reporting on depressed wood yield and quality in timber trees (Lambert et al. ), and depressed fruit quality (Dong et al. ; Smith et al. : Zude et al. ) also appearing in the present volume. Globally, Shorrocks (1997)1 estimates that ?? tonnes of B fertiliser is applied annually in agriculture. The economic benefits from the use of B fertiliser have not been quantified but are clearly enormous. Paradoxically, the clear economic imperatives for using B fertiliser on low B soils are not matched by a similar clarity of understanding of the role and functions of B in plants.

Book The Rice Wheat Cropping System of South Asia

Download or read book The Rice Wheat Cropping System of South Asia written by Palit Kataki and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives of more than a billion people depend on the answer! This valuable book surveys the problems of the rice-wheat cropping system practiced on the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP). Introduced at the time of the Green Revolution, it transformed agriculture and produced thirty years of bumper crops. The Rice-Wheat Cropping System of South Asia: Efficient Production Management offers scientific analysis of the aftereffects of this intense cropping. The Rice-Wheat Cropping System of South Asia: Efficient Production Management focuses on the questions of soil depletion, pest infestation, and soil alkalinity as elements of declining productivity. Along with clear charts, maps, and graphs, it provides practical suggestions for improving and maintaining the productivity of this irreplaceable farmland. The Rice-Wheat Cropping System of South Asia looks at the problems that have arisen for both the rice and wheat phases, including: depletion of micronutrients degradation of major nutrients from unbalanced fertilization practices infestations of nematodes increasing soil alkalinity as a result of irrigation It also suggests solutions for maintaining productivity, including: integrated pest management sustainable agriculture micronutrient fertilizers This informative book and its companion volume, The Rice-Wheat Cropping System of South Asia: Trends, Constraints, Productivity and Policy, are essential planning tools for agronomists, policymakers, and agroeconomists. It is also a useful reference for anyone interested in the problems of famine and intensive cropping not only in South Asia but in the world.

Book Evaluation of Soil Test Methods for the Analyses of Zinc and Boron

Download or read book Evaluation of Soil Test Methods for the Analyses of Zinc and Boron written by R. B. Castillo and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relative suitability of zinc test methods namely, 0,1N HC1, 1% aq. disodiumethylenediaminetraacetate (NaEDTA), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) and ammonium acetate-diphenylthiocarbazone (Dithizone) were evaluated in greenhouse and laboratory experiments using San Manuel sandy clay loam, Luisiana clay, Alaminos loam and Calumpang clay. Different amounts of zinc were extracted by the four methods from each of the soil studied. the suitability of the methods in terms of the correlation with plant zinc over all soils folloes the order DTPA> 0.1N 0.1N HC1> 1% aq. Na2 EDTA> 0.1N HC1. With regards to reproducibility as indicated by the standard deviation and coefficiente of variation, the methods are ranked as DTPA> 0.1N HC1> 1% aq. Na2EDTA> Dithizone. The efficiency of hot water and 0.1 N H2SO4 to extract boron, and the suitability of curcumin and quinalizarin methods to colorimetrically determine boron from the extracts were also studied on the same soil types. The hot water method is as good as the 0.1 N H2 S=4 method. The correlation coefficients of test values with boron contents of plants are 0.870, 0.840, 0.875 and 0.877 respectively, for water soluble boron curcumin and acid soluble boron quinalizarin. As shown by greater increases in test values per ppm B applied, the WSB-curcumin method was more sensitive than WSB-quinalizarin. On the other hand, with ASB extraction, quinalizarin color development imparted greater sensivity than cucumin method. In terms of reproducibility, the methods ...

Book excerpt: The well being of the humans including animals depend upon very much on how the soil productivity is maintained without ecosystems degradation. Most likely soil can efficiently sustain humanity with food, fibre, feed to animals and clean environmental maintenance only when it is considered and managed from the holistic and ecosystem points of view. Plants need at least 16 essential elements for their normal growth and to complete their life. The soil testing provides the status of the nutrients determined in the laboratory for the application of appropriate rate of fertilizers to eliminate the nutrients limiting for production. The soil testing along with plant analysis gives the true status of plant nutrients affected by soil properties to take the proper care for the plant growth. Our available water resources are diminishing and getting polluted with excess use of fertilizers and pesticides which are ultimately affecting the environment, food produced and water quality. The purpose of this book 'Soil Testing and Analysis' is (i) to provide the vital plant nutrients functions for which soil testing is to be made; (ii) to determine the nutrient status of the soil with appropriate methods, measurements and criteria for interpreting those assessments; (iii) to analyze the appropriate parts of the plant samples for nutrient elements with available methods of analysis; (iv) to analyze the important water quality parameters with interpretations; and (v) to prepare the soil, plant and water samples for the analysis of pesticide residues with the different available methods. This is a comprehensive presentation of useful information for the scientific and technical personals involved in such types of analysis.
