Book excerpt: "Stock status of southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (sGSL) snow crab, Chionoecetes opilio, in 2021 is in the healthy zone based on the defined reference points for this stock, with an a commercially exploitable biomass of 80,950 t projected for 2022. The exploitation rate of the 2021 fishery was estimated at 31.5%, a relatively low value stemming from a 15% reduction in commercial biomass estimates made in response to concerns of over-estimation of stock indices during the 2019 and 2020 surveys. Fishery recruitment biomass is estimated at 62,473 t, while residual biomass was estimated at 19,144 t. Based on the harvest control rule, the commercial stock biomass index corresponds to a target exploitation rate of 40.96% resulting in a Total Allowable Catch (TAC) of 33,163 t for the 2022 fishery. Based on this catch option, a risk analysis indicates that there is a very low likelihood that the residual stock biomass would be below the limit reference point and a very high likelihood that the 2022 commercial stock biomass would be above the upper stock reference point. Mature female abundance remains high, though at lower levels than those observed in 2019 and 2020 and the population recruitment index is very high"--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: A regional advisory process meeting was held January 27 and 28, 2015 in Moncton (NB) to conduct a science peer review of the status of the snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) biological unit of the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (sGSL). The science review was conducted in response to a request from DFO Fisheries and Aquaculture Management (FAM) for advice on the status of stock in 2014 and catch advice for the 2015 fishery. The assessment on the status of the southern Gulf snow crab resource (Areas 12, 19, 12E and 12F) is based on fishery independent trawl surveys that provide indicators of abundance (commercial biomass), reproductive potential (abundance of mature females) and recruitment. Participants at the science review included science staff from the DFO Gulf Region, personnel from DFO FAM Gulf and Quebec regions, from universities, from aboriginal communities, from the fishing industry, from provincial governments, and invited external experts. A review of the stock status and the catch advice for the 2015 fishery is presented in a Science Advisory Report. Four research documents are expected in support of the advisory report.

The landings of snow crab from the southern Gulf of St. [...] In the 2015 trawl survey, geographic concentrations of commercial-sized adult males were located in Bradelle Bank, in Shediac valley, in Chaleur Bay, the central and in the southern parts of the Magdalen Channel and in the southeastern part of the sGSL (Figure 7). [...] Lawrence is calculated as the ratio between the catch of the fishery in the year of the assessment and the commercial biomass estimated from the trawl survey in the previous year. [...] Total mortality is calculated as residual biomass estimated from the survey in the year of the assessment divided by the biomass available to the fishery as estimated in the previous year's survey. [...] Over the time series, the estimated commercial biomass from the survey was 29.2% higher than the sum of the residual biomass and the landings of the following year.
