Book Assessment of Immune status by the Leukocyte Adherence Inhibition Test

Download or read book Assessment of Immune status by the Leukocyte Adherence Inhibition Test written by D Thomson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment of Immune Status by the Leukocyte Adherence Inhibition Test reviews many aspects of the immune response and cellular requirements in leukocyte adherence inhibition (LAI). It compares the LAI methodology with alternative approaches, discusses the method that has been adopted to determine whether the LAI phenomenon measures a specific immune response, and explores how these phenomena fit in with and relate to the traditional immune response. Organized into three parts encompassing 15 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the hemocytometer assay, the immunological basis and applications of hemocytometer LAI, the immune response as assayed by the test tube method, and the microplate assay. It then discusses cellular populations in LAI; measurements of humoral antitumor immunity; clinical application of LAI in breast cancer, prostate cancer, and rheumatic diseases; the biology of LAI and its response to human cancer; and cellular and pharmacologic aspects of LAI. It also compares microplate LAI with other in vitro assays of cell-mediated immunity, as well as tumor immunity in animal models and human cancer. Both beginning and experienced investigators involved in all aspects of immunologic research will find this book extremely useful.

Download or read book Immunology for Surgeons written by J.E. Castro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immunology is a rapidly developing subject. The contributors in this book present some components of immunological knowledge which relate to the present and the possible future practice of surgery. Aspects of cellular and humoral immunity necessary for understanding are described and considera tion given to the mechanisms underlying immunological diseases. Whilst the original interest in immune response was related to microbial resistance, the recent impetus to surgical immunology has been the resurgence of organ grafting. Separate sections of the book deal with clinical organ transplanta tion, the allograft reaction, graft rejection and immunogenetics. A pre-requi site of successful organ grafting is suppressive control of immune responses. Approaches to conventional immunosuppression and specific non-reactivity are therefore considered. One method of cancer therapy is strengthening of the host's immune responses. Both experimental and clinical immunotherapy are discussed and components of tumour immunology necessary for their rational understand ing are dealt with separately. Successful immunotherapy requires monitoring of immune responses but another method for improving results of cancer treatment is earlier diagnosis by immunological methods. The book is aimed at practising surgeons who want to know the relevance of immunology to clinical surgery and laboratory scientists needing to understand the applications of their basic concepts. I am very grateful both to the authors for their contributions and the editorial staff of MTP Press Limited, for their considerable help.

Book Melanoma Antigens and Antibodies

Download or read book Melanoma Antigens and Antibodies written by Ralph A. Reisfeld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever-expanding research on human cancer has resulted in numerous technical and conceptual advances during the last few years. Serological, structural, and biological char acterization of human melanoma constitutes one area of research that has received consid erable attention from researchers and clinicians and has generated new and exciting infor mation. In this volume, we have attempted to assemble work on topics that produced some of the most recent advances. We asked each author to describe and interpret his most cur rent research and, whenever possible, to compare and contrast it with work of other inves tigators in the field. We have been careful not to impose our viewpoints except in contri butions from our own laboratories, since we want to provide the reader with as many divergent and sometimes opposing viewpoints as feasible. Therefore, we have not been overly concerned with overlaps in some individual topics. We hope that this volume will provide the reader with a well-balanced overview of current problems and ideas in a par ticular area of cancer research. We wish to express our thanks to all contributors for their timely and very interesting manuscripts, and we sincerely hope that the reader will enjoy this volume and benefit as much from it as we did. Book excerpt: Breast cancer continues to be a major problem. In Volume 1 of this series we dealt exclusively with topics concerned with therapy. In Volume 2 we explored various aspects of experimental biology which are critical to our developing better methods of diagnosis and treatment. In the pres ent volume, we tum to a series of individual topics of considerable interest, including systemic methods for hormonal ablation, screening for early cancer, male breast cancer, and more. The first chapter addresses the question of why some breast tumors metastasize and others do not. Based on elegant animal tumor models, Kim believes that metastasizing tumor cells are the undesirable by product of the host immune surveillance mechanism. Unstable mem brane structures lead to shedding of membrane constituents, abnormal locomotive properties, and evasion of the host defense system. Factors which alter membrane structure will therefore have to be considered in our approach to the management of early breast cancer.

Book Clinical Management of Melanoma

Download or read book Clinical Management of Melanoma written by H.F. Seigler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melanoma is a disease entity that has the capability of involving all organ systems of the human body. During the last decade a dramatic increase in the incidence of this disease has been noted. It is surpassed in this dreadful statistic only by carcinoma of the lung. During this time frame, much has been defined and written concerning the histopathology and prognostic fac tors of this neoplastic disorder. The relative ease of maintaining this malig nant cell in tissue culture has permitted the cellular biologist, tumor immu nologist, immunochemist and geneticist an ideal in vitro experimental mod el for advancing our understanding of human malignancy. Histopathologic features, prognostic factors, membrane antigenic expression and host-tumor relationship in this disease have all been extensively studied and it has thus become evident that melanoma can and does serve as a prototype for the study of human malignancies in general. Basic scientists including embry ologists, immunologists, virologists, immunochemists, geneticists, biostatisti cians and cellular biologists, should find this monograph of interest. Bridg ing clinical specialists including the pathologist, diagnostic and therapeutic radiologist and epidemiologist will also find areas of interest in these writ ings. Because of the fact that melanoma can involve all organ systems, clin icians ranging from family practitioners to the subspecialists should become thoroughly familiar with the clinical aspects of this disease, which are fully covered in this book. Locoregional therapIes are discussed in some depth.

Book Guide to Immediate Anaesthetic Reactions

Download or read book Guide to Immediate Anaesthetic Reactions written by John B. Watkins and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guide to Immediate Anaesthetic Reactions serves as a practical guide to the management of adverse anesthetic response. This book provides information pertinent to the functions of anesthesia, including hypnosis, analgesia, and neuromuscular control. Organized into six chapters, this book begins with an overview of the immunological principles in anesthesia and surgery. This text then discusses mechanisms of the adverse anesthetic reactions as well as the characteristics of immune response. Other chapters consider the theory and practical management of anaphylactoid reactions, including the requirements for laboratory studies. This book presents as well a practical approach to the understanding, recognition, and management of the life-threatening reactions of anesthesia to patients. The reader is introduced to the general considerations for patients presenting with various genetic abnormalities likely to trigger abnormal response to anesthesia. The final chapter deals with the immediate adverse reactions that are related to defects of enzyme function rather than to immunity. This book is a valuable resource for anesthetists, surgeons, and physicians.
