Book Register implementation for land cover legends

Download or read book Register implementation for land cover legends written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land cover assessment and monitoring of its dynamics are essential requirements for the sustainable management of natural resources, environmental protection, food security, humanitarian programmes as well as core data for monitoring and modelling. Land Cover (LC) data are therefore fundamental in fulfilling the mandates of many United Nations (UN), international and national institutions and programmes. Despite the recognition of such importance, current users of LC data still lack access to sufficient reliable or comparable baseline LC data. These data are essential to tackle the increasing concerns in regard to food security, environmental degradation, and climate change. Critically, maintaining and restoring land resources plays a vital task in tackling climate change, securing biodiversity, and maintaining crucial ecosystem services, while ensuring resilient livelihoods and food security.

Book Improving Large Area Land Cover Classification Using Multi temporal Remote Sensing Data

Download or read book Improving Large Area Land Cover Classification Using Multi temporal Remote Sensing Data written by W. Olthof and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land cover is described in other studies as the (bio)physical cover of the Earth’s surface and includes vegetated areas, artificial areas, bare areas and water bodies. Land cover is prone to changes due to anthropogenic activities and natural processes. These changes influence climate, e.g. by their effect on emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases and changes in carbon storage capacity. Therefore, accurate and continuous information on land cover is needed on a global scale. User requirements analysis conducted by the Climate Change Initiative Land Cover consortium (CCI-LC) proved that current land cover products derived from remotely sensed data are lacking accuracy and consistency. These issues often arise due to the inability of the input data to capture temporal dynamics by using a limited time span. Furthermore, land cover changes are often not taken into account in current classification approaches. This research aims to improve current classification approaches by investigating 1) how time series parameters, e.g. phenological metrics, can be extracted from multi-temporal MERIS data and 2) how these can be utilized for classification purposes. Furthermore, a comparison was made between classification results with and without these parameters in order 3) to determine to what extent these influence the classification result. In addition, given the fact that vegetation is highly dynamic, another goal of this study was to investigate 4) how temporally stable locations can be separated from unstable areas in order to ultimately limit classification to the stable period within a time series. The use of phenological metrics was emphasized during this study in order to include vegetation dynamics in the classification approach. During this study an operational method was developed to extract phenological metrics from MTCI and NDVI time series which were successfully used for land cover classification. The use of this method seems to increase the overall accuracy of the classification results and has the potential to be used on a large scale. In addition, an explorative study was conducted on the separation of temporary land cover change from permanent land cover change. This resulted in a fast method that may be effectively added to the classification process and applied on a larger scale.

Book Continuous Change Detection and Classification of Land Cover Using All Available Landsat Data

Download or read book Continuous Change Detection and Classification of Land Cover Using All Available Landsat Data written by Zhe Zhu and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Land cover mapping and monitoring has been widely recognized as important for understanding global change and in particular, human contributions. This research emphasizes the use of the time domain for mapping land cover and changes in land cover using satellite images. Unlike most prior methods that compare pairs or sets of images for identifying change, this research compares observations with model predictions. Moreover, instead of classifying satellite images directly, it uses coefficients from time series models as inputs for land cover mapping. The methods developed are capable of detecting many kinds of land cover change as they occur and providing land cover maps for any given time at high temporal frequency. One key processing step of the satellite images is the elimination of "noisy" observations due to clouds, cloud shadows, and snow. I developed a new algorithm called Fmask that processes each Landsat scene individually using an object-based method. For a globally distributed set of reference data, the overall cloud detection accuracy is 96%. A second step further improves cloud detection by using temporal information. The first application of the new methods based on time series analysis found change in forests in an area in Georgia and South Carolina. After the difference between observed and predicted reflectance exceeds a threshold three consecutive times a site is identified as forest disturbance. Accuracy assessment reveals that both the producers and users accuracies are higher than 95% in the spatial domain and approximately 94% in the temporal domain. The second application of this new approach extends the algorithm to include identification of a wide variety of land cover changes as well as land cover mapping. In this approach, the entire archive of Landsat imagery is analyzed to produce a comprehensive land cover history of the Boston region. The results are accurate for detecting change, with producers accuracy of 98% and users accuracies of 86% in the spatial domain and temporal accuracy of 80%. Overall, this research demonstrates the great potential for use of time series analysis of satellite images to monitor land cover change

Book Development and Evaluation of Advanced Classification Systems Using Remotely Sensed Data for Accurate Land Use Land Cover Mapping

Download or read book Development and Evaluation of Advanced Classification Systems Using Remotely Sensed Data for Accurate Land Use Land Cover Mapping written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our general objective in this research was to explore, design, develop, implement, and evaluate advanced classification approaches for more accurate land-use/land-cover mapping using remotely sensed data. The overall research consists of three interrelated studies. Simulated Annealing (SA) has been shown to be able to overcome the local minimum problem in many optimization methods. Our hypothesis in the first study was that SA-based classification systems could help overcome the local minimum problem in one of such methods, K-means, and thus improve the classification performance. Our experimental results using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images have shown that SA-based classification systems significantly improved the classification accuracy over that of the K-means algorithm when appropriate parameters were chosen. In the second study, we developed an automated Artificial Neural Network (ANN) classification system and performed a classification of a Landsat TM image. Two hypotheses were tested: 1) the ANN system was suitable for land cover mapping, and 2) the incorporation of SA network could overcome the local minima problem in ANN approaches and improve the resulting classification accuracy. Our study demonstrated that the ANN classification system was a robust and suitable classification system for land cover mapping. Experimental results indicated that the incorporation of SA improved the classification accuracy of an unsupervised ANN network. ANNs have been shown to have great potential to fuse multiple source data sets. Our hypothesis in the third study was that a proposed two-stage ANN-based multisource classification of Landsat TM and SPOT images could increase the classification accuracy of the derived land categories. Our experimental results demonstrated that the two-stage multisource classification had the best classification performance when proper training sets were used. The adequate and reliable training sets were successfully selected by an Autom.
