They exploit the additional functionalities that modern mobile phones are equipped with. Many mobile payment systems suffered from failed trials, and many others will fail. It is therefore important to investigate the factors that may lead to the success of such systems. This paper describes four mobile payment solutions, namely cellular networks, infrared, Bluetooth, and Near Field Communication, and presents NFC-based solutions in more detail and discusses certain authentication and security concerns that are related to this technology. The study also compares the user's acceptance of these technologies based on certain factors that are adopted from the technology acceptance literature: perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, perceived trust, mobility, and cost.

This payment technology is currently used in bank- and credit cards, as well as in mobile phones. This thesis focuses on NFC-Mobile-Payment using mobile phones. Aim of this work was, to identify the drivers of the customer adoption of NFC-Mobile-Payment in South Korea and compare them to previous findings from Austria and Taiwan. The drivers have been analyzed using the model of Pham and Ho that bases on the Technology-Acceptance Model (TAM). The countries have been compared to each other taking in account cultural, technological, and sociological differences and similarities. An empirical inquiry has been processed and data has been collected through an online survey. The found data was analyzed using the Maximum-Likelyhood-Method. In South Korea, the users’ trust in the involved companies and people, the absorptive capacity, the compatibility with the lifestyle and the tasks of the users the trialability, the personal innovativeness the attractiveness of available alternatives and the perceived usefulness were identified as influential drivers on the adoption of NFC-Mobile-Payment. The findings from South Korea differed significantly from those in the other two countries. Significant differences between Korea and the other two countries were found in all observed drivers except the users’ trust in the involved companies and people and the attractiveness of available alternatives. Another important finding is that in some aspects, the two Asian countries share more similarities with each other than both do with Austria, but in other aspects, Austria and Korea were found to be much closer to each other than each of them to Taiwan. Suggestions to executives of involved companies and institutions are provided in order to support enhancing the customer adoption of NFC-Mobile-Payment and other technological solutions with similar characteristics.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to provide a better understanding of the effects of financial incentives in adopting NFC mobile payment within the framework of the Diffusion of Innovation Theory. More specifically, this study examines 1) whether the availability, type, amount, and promotion period of financial incentives increase consumers' trust in adopting NFC mobile payment; 2) whether the availability, type, amount, and promotion period of financial incentives decrease consumers' perceived risk in adopting NFC mobile payment; 3) whether the availability, type, amount, and promotion period of financial incentives increase consumers' intention to adopt NFC mobile payment; and 4) whether different financial incentives influence consumers' continuance intention to use NFC mobile payment when incentives have expired. Four general hypotheses and 11 specific hypotheses were tested in structural equation models using experimental survey data collected from 463 U.S. adults aged between 18 and 35. The findings showed that the availability of financial incentives had a significant impact on NFC mobile payment adoption. Specifically, consumers with financial incentives had a higher level of trust and intention, and a lower level of perceived risk in adopting NFC mobile payment compared to consumers who were not offered financial incentives. However, no significant differences were found between cash back and discount rewards, 5% versus 10% rewards, and 1-month and 3-month reward periods. The results of this study provide service providers and researchers a better understanding of the impact of financial incentives on NFC mobile payment adoption and also give insight to providers in the mobile payment systems channel as well as retailers offering this payment option.

Google Wallet is a mobile payment Android app that transforms a phone into a wallet. This app utilizes the Near Field Communication (NFC) technology that allows its users to pay for purchased items and redeem offers. At this initial stage of business, there are many features and factors that Google needs to change in order to bring about the mass adoption of this service. As the Business Technology Analysts at Google, we - Kritika Maheshwari, Malvika Saraf and Rohan Handa aim at addressing the hurdles for this technology and the methods to bring it to fruition. In the process we evaluate Google’s profit motivation and the bigger strategy behind this service. First, we explain the business approach which describes the importance of the adopted business model. We use Porter’s Five Force analysis to determine the competitive intensity in the market followed by SWOT analysis to give recommendations that will help in the mass adoption. Finally, we focus our paper on formulating a strategy canvas in order to study the existing payment methods in comparison to our service. The paper concludes with recommendations to Google for promoting wide customer acceptance.
