Book Assessing the State of Servant Leadership Teacher Morale and Student Academic Performance Outcomes in a Florida Elementary School District

Download or read book Assessing the State of Servant Leadership Teacher Morale and Student Academic Performance Outcomes in a Florida Elementary School District written by Abdul EL-Amin and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This descriptive research study was conducted to determine the state of perceived teacher morale and student academic performance as measured by fourth-grade reading and math scores among four elementary schools defined by the servant leadership score of each principal in this Florida elementary school district. While related research from other geographical areas was identified and published, the aim of this study was to describe the current state of these variables in the southeastern United States. Four elementary principals and 153 elementary teachers participated in this study. The Revised Servant Leadership Profile 360 survey (RSLP 360) was used to obtain the principals' perceptions of servant leadership based on the criteria from the survey to categorize the four schools as servant or non-servant leadership-led schools, and the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire survey (PTO) was used to collect the teachers' perceptions of morale. Fourth-grade Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) scores in mathematics and reading were retrieved from the Florida Department of Education database and used as the third variable in this study. The intent of this research was not to define relationships between servant leadership, teacher morale, and student test scores, but to describe the extent to which these variables existed based on the perceptions of the survey participants and state test scores for this school district in Florida. The results from this study may be used for future research and practices to further examine the active and potential status of servant leadership, teacher morale, and student academic performance outcomes in PreK-12 education.

Book Servant Leadership and Instructional Literacy Coaching

Download or read book Servant Leadership and Instructional Literacy Coaching written by Thelma J. Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to enhance student achievement in reading, many high schools have integrated instructional literacy coaches into the teaching staff to provide support for the English teachers. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to explore the relationship between the self-reported servant leadership practices used by instructional literacy coaches, the perceived level of servant leadership reported by collaborating English teachers, and student achievement. The site for this study was a public school district in Texas. Fifteen instructional literacy coaches and 100 English teachers completed the Servant Leadership Assessment Instrument (SLAI), which provided the instrumentation for this study. The results of the SLAI were examined in relation to student achievement data on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). No statistically significant correlation was found between instructional literacy coaches' self-reported servant leadership, language arts teachers' perceptions of their literacy coach's servant leadership behaviors and student achievement. However, an exploratory analysis of Hypothesis 2 indicated that, while there was no significant correlation in SLAI scores between instructional literacy coaches and English teachers, there was a difference in servant leadership behaviors self-reported by instructional literacy coaches and teacher reported servant leadership behaviors and practices of literacy coaches. This research has implications for educational leadership practice, as educators can use insights from this study to explore appropriate models of leadership and reform as they work to improve student achievement.

This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to quantitatively explore and analyze the relationships among the factors of servant leadership, school culture, and student achievement in Missouri elementary schools. Two survey instruments, the Servant Leadership Assessment Instrument and the School Culture Survey, were used. A total of 677 teachers from 62 elementary schools in Missouri participated. Data from the two surveys as well as student achievement data were aggregated at the school level and analyzed using correlation and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study explain the influence of principal servant leadership on school culture and student achievement, the influence of school culture on student achievement, and the influence of the combination of servant leadership and school culture on student achievement. Explanatory models were designed from the findings to depict the relationships between servant leadership, school culture, and student achievement.

Book Educational Leadership in an Age of Accountability

Download or read book Educational Leadership in an Age of Accountability written by Daniel L. Duke and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The insistence by policymakers and politicians that educators be held accountable for student outcomes has resulted in dramatic shifts in the responsibilities of department chairs, principals, and superintendents. Educational Leadership in an Age of Accountability explores these changes in Virginia, following its implementation of an ambitious accountability plan that called for standards of learning, statewide high-stakes tests, standards of accreditation, and annual school performance report cards. This book examines factors such as the fate of students who fail state tests, achievement differences between black and white students, ethical issues surrounding accountability measures, and the increasing politicization of local schooling. Educational Leadership in an Age of Accountability shows that accountability pressure has done more than previous reforms to foster instructional leadership.

Download or read book Identifying Teacher Perceptions of Servant Leadership Influences on Professional Development written by Amy M. Dietzman and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine the relationship between principal servant leadership characteristics and engagement in the professional development of teachers in high schools located in a large school district in a southwestern state. Eighty-one high school teachers completed the School Leadership Culture Inventory (SLCI) and the Professional Learning Community Assessment - Revised (PLCA-R) to measure their perceptions of principal servant leadership characteristics and their own engagement, empowerment, and collaboration in professional development. A correlational design was employed to determine relationships between the variables. As hypothesized, servant leadership characteristics were positively correlated to teacher feelings of engagement in professional development, consisting of Shared Personal Practice (r=.502) and Collective Learning and Application (r=.565). In addition, the servant leadership characteristic of Commitment to the Growth of People was positively correlated with Empowerment in Professional Development and the servant leadership characteristic of Building Community was also positively correlated to Collaborative Working Environments (r=.385; r=.518). Results demonstrated that at servant leadership characteristics, as a whole, and the specific characteristics of being committed to the growth of individuals and building community are important emphases for school leaders who want to engage teachers in learning, growing, and changing for school improvement.

Book Perceptions of Teacher Leaders on the Processes of Distributed Leadership in Relation to Student Achievement in High Performing Elementary Schools in the Urban Unified School District

Download or read book Perceptions of Teacher Leaders on the Processes of Distributed Leadership in Relation to Student Achievement in High Performing Elementary Schools in the Urban Unified School District written by Alusine Conteh and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the educational reform process it is significant to acknowledge that effective leadership matters when it comes to school improvement activities. Educators are constantly faced with federal, state, and local district mandates: it would be unwise to consider the principal as the only individual to provide leadership for school improvement. Therefore, a distributive perspective to leadership is a paradigm shift with a central focus on leadership that is collectively shared by administrators and teachers. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore teacher leaders' perceptions on the distributive leadership practices and its possible impact on student outcomes. Data were collected by conducting semi-structured interviews with teacher leaders and principals from five participating school sites, ten teacher leaders responded to a paper-pencil anonymous surveys, field observations were completed at participating sites, and document review was completed which included California State Test (CST) report from three school years (2010 – 2012), and Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) scores for 2014-2015 school year. The distributed leadership concept offers a considerable platform for studying leadership as collective rather than an individual practice. Based on the literature, five conclusions were drawn and recommendations were made regarding implications for future practice. First, the findings indicated that the principal has a pivotal role to play in influencing distributed leadership practices which will have a positive impact on student achievement. Second, the findings revealed that teacher leaders were more inclined to participate in distributed leadership when they were encouraged by the principal and invited to perform leadership roles. Third, the findings also indicate that at these participating sites, there were structures within the organizations that harnessed teacher leadership – the ability to encourage colleagues to change, Fourth, the findings indicated that through collaborative practices, teacher leaders and principals were successful providing leadership for the participating school sites that led to positive impact on student outcomes. Last, the findings indicated that teacher leaders overwhelmingly shared they wanted to be considered as professionals by allowing them the freedom to practice instructional autonomy. The positive impact of "Enabling Others to Act" and "Inspiring a Shared Vision" implies that a distributive perspective may lead to school improvement.

Book Impact of Professional Learning Community Practices on Morale of Urban High School Teachers

Download or read book Impact of Professional Learning Community Practices on Morale of Urban High School Teachers written by Angel Almanzar and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This applied dissertation was designed to determine the impact a planned intervention, or participants' engagement in lesson study practices, had on teacher morale and professional learning communities within a public high school located in the Southeastern part of the United States. A review of a yearly teacher survey conducted by the district's school board to determine teacher, parent, and student perceptions about their school demonstrated that teachers at the research site felt that morale was low. A literature review indicated that, in effective schools, teachers have a sense of belonging by having ownership of their institutional goals. The researcher invited 93 teachers to complete the Staff Morale Questionnaire (Smith, 1971), and the Hipp and Huffman (2010) Professional Learning Communities Assessment-Revised to identify their work-site morale and Professional Learning Communities perceptions. Forty-two teachers volunteered to complete both instruments. Over the course of 4 months, teachers met once every 2 weeks for 30 minutes to develop lessons, teach lessons, observe each other, offer each other feedback, reteach the lessons, and identify the best practices as described by Stepanek, Appel, Leong, Mangan, & Mitchell (2007). At the end of the intervention, the researcher readministered the Staff Morale Questionnaire (Smith, 1971), and the Hipp and Huffman (2010) Professional Learning Communities Assessment-Revised to all participating teachers. The completed instruments were then collected and the data analyzed to determine the impact of the intervention designed to improve the morale and professional community practices of these urban high school teachers. This results of this study show that when teachers are given the opportunity and time to work together to develop their professional learning activities and share best practices, their morale increases. The "t" test results for the six subscales of the Teachers' Professional Learning Community Assessment showed that participants scored significantly higher at post than at pretest on shared and supportive leadership, shared values and vision, collective learning and application, shared personal practice, supportive conditions--relationships, and supportive conditions--structure. Similarly, the t test results for the three subscales of the Teachers' Morale Questionnaire subscales mean showed that participants scored significantly higher at posttest than at pretest on leadership synergy, cohesive pride, and personal challenge. These results indicated that the intervention increased participants' professional learning practices and teachers' morale. The following are appended: (1) Staff Morale Questionnaire; (2) Hipp and Huffman's (2010) PLCA-Revised; (3) Permission to Use Hipp and Huffman's (2010) PLCA-Revised; (4) Consent Letter to Participants; (5) Letter to Teachers to Complete the Instruments; (6) Guided Goal Setting for Groups Presentation; (7) Lesson Study Guiding Questions; (8) Lesson Study Action Plan: Team Responsibilities; (9) Lesson Study Action Plan: Schedule; (10) Reading Leading Lesson Study: A Practical Guide for Teachers and Facilitator; (11) Log of Faculty Job Satisfaction Activities; (12) Group Goal Setting Worksheet; (13) Lesson Study Action Plan; (14) Lesson Study Lesson Plan Format; (15) Team Member Log-Post-Debriefing; (16) Student Learning Outcome; (17) Process for Revising the Lesson Teams Guiding Question; and (18) Lesson Study Report Guidelines.

Book Servant Leadership s Impact on Campus Wide Culture and Teacher Retention Rates

Download or read book Servant Leadership s Impact on Campus Wide Culture and Teacher Retention Rates written by Benjamin W. Odell and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Servant Leadership has shown effective use in government, business, and the day to day life, but how effective would it be in the educational setting? With consistent changes to the educational paradigm affecting campus cultures, and with a huge teacher attrition rate, changes in administrative policies may be needed. This mixed methods study looks at how servant leadership impacts campus culture and teacher retention rates. This study surveyed teachers surrounding servant leadership traits, campus culture, and what factors might influence their retention within the educational system. Furthermore, teachers who quit the profession or who have left one school environment for another were interviewed to determine if servant leadership could have influenced their decision to leave. This mixed methods study was analyzed utilizing the iterative process and grounded theory, looking for the relationship between these factors in a schooling environment, and analyzing the repetitive themes that sprang forth from interviews with teachers. From this study, it appears servant leadership holds a significant correlation teacher retention rates and campus culture. With that in mind, if schools utilized a servant leadership approach, the educational system would retain more teachers and build a stronger school culture, and thus, bolster student achievement. After all, servant leadership would create more support and empowerment for teachers. It also would create stronger administrators and students. It is the recommendation of this study to utilize the servant leadership model within schools.

Book Perceptions of Principals and Teachers of Their Roles and Other Variables in School Culture in Improving Their School s Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test FCAT Letter Grade by Two Grade Levels

Download or read book Perceptions of Principals and Teachers of Their Roles and Other Variables in School Culture in Improving Their School s Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test FCAT Letter Grade by Two Grade Levels written by Tracey D. Tedder and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on perceptions of principals, assistant principals and teachers of their impact on student achievement scores in improving their school's Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test letter grade scores. This information is of importance because we do not have information on how school reference groups (principals, teachers) perceive the grading of schools as defined by the Florida A+ Plan. Specifically, this study investigated perceptions of school principals, assistant principals and teachers on their role in improving the school's FCAT letter grade by two grade levels in a 9-month school year. This qualitative case study analyzes perceptions of factors and behaviors that have made a positive difference in two Polk County, Florida public elementary schools' FCAT. Data collection included interviews of teachers, assistant principals and principals. Study implications include the impact upon students, teachers, administrators and parents, particularly pressures upon all involved at the school level to improve student test scores and therefore, to improve their letter grade on the Florida A+ Plan. Another implication may be the possibility of improving results by decentralizing into small learning communities (SLC's). Conclusions including administrators and teachers perceiving emotional, professional, instructional, and climate support as key factors, but no clear conclusive perception by a majority of respondents was evident regarding improved scores.
