Book Assessing the Relationship Between Soil Moisture and Precipitation Using Remotely Sensed Data

Download or read book Assessing the Relationship Between Soil Moisture and Precipitation Using Remotely Sensed Data written by Robin Celestina Sehler and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interplay of precipitation and soil can support human life and destroy it. Adequate rain and soil moisture enable the global food supply to flourish. Inversely, too much precipitation and saturated soil result in flooding. Precipitation's inferred impact on soil moisture is straightforward - precipitation causes soil moisture to increase. The purpose of this study is to determine if satellite data confirms or negates this expected hydrologic relationship. Satellite data from NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Mission are used to calculate Pearson's Correlation Coefficient at the global scale, for 8-day composites spanning March 31, 2015 to November 26, 2017. Additionally, MODIS land cover type and Koppen - Geiger climate classification are used to interpret correlation magnitude and direction. Study results indicate 73% of global land have a moderate to very strong correlation between precipitation and soil moisture. Also, 93% of global land surface has a positive correlation, while 1% of land surface has a negative correlation, tending to occur in large river basins. Implications from this study include the informal validation of SMAP data, in light of the functional loss of its active radar.

Book Water Footprint and Virtual Water Trade in Spain

Download or read book Water Footprint and Virtual Water Trade in Spain written by Alberto Garrido and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-25 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1 General Framework In most arid and semi-arid countries, water resource management is an issue that is both important and controversial. Most water resources experts now acknowledge that water conflicts are not caused by physical scarcity but are mainly due to poor water management (Rosegrant et al. 2002; Benoit and Comeau 2005; Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture 2007; Garrido and Dinar 2010, among others). The scientific and technological advances of the past 50 years have led to new ways to solve many water-related conflicts, often with tools that seemed unthinkable a few decades ago (Llamas 2005; Lopez-Gunn and Llamas 2008). This study deals with the estimation and analysis of Spain’s water footprint, both from a hydrological and economic perspective. Its ultimate objective is to report on the allocative efficiency of water and economic resources. This analysis can provide a transparent and multidisciplinary framework for informing and optimising water policy decisions, contributing at the same time to the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EC). It also responds to the current mandate of the Spanish Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs, which recently issued instructions for drafting river basin management plans in compliance with the EU Water Framework Directive, with a deadline of end of year 2009 and then every 6 years (BOE 2008).

This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents state-of-the-art scientific evidence and technological innovations to restore lands on the Loess Plateau of China, known worldwide for its serious land degradation and desertification problems. Supported by a rapidly developing Chinese economy and the dissemination of effective technology, the Grain-for-Green Project and Western Development Action launched by the Chinese government have resulted in successful ecological restoration and protection over the past 30 years. These programs have contributed not only to conservation of soil and water, but also to economic development. At the same time, however, these developmental interventions have brought new challenges that have not yet been fully addressed. The book describes (1) case studies of success and failure in practice, including rare success stories of combating desertification; (2) technical issues such as erosion control and breeding of stress-tolerant plant species, and socioeconomic measures taken by the Chinese government and lending policies with support from the World Bank; and (3) comprehensive measures against desertification, such as water and wind erosion, salinization, and deforestation. This volume is recommended for researchers and students above the undergraduate level in diverse fields including soil science, rural engineering, social technology and civil engineering, biology, ecology, climatology, physical and human geography, and developmental economics, among others. It also serves as a valuable resource for engineers, government officials, and NPOs and NGOs involved in afforestation, ecological restoration, combating desertification, disaster prevention, and sustainable rural development.

Book Frameworks for Improving Multi Index Drought Monitoring Using Remote Sensing Observations

Download or read book Frameworks for Improving Multi Index Drought Monitoring Using Remote Sensing Observations written by Alireza Farahmand and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching goal of this dissertation is to improve current capabilities in drought monitoring using space-based observations, with a focus on integrating remotely sensed data products that are not commonly being used for drought monitoring. The first chapter of this dissertation, surveys current and emerging drought monitoring approaches using remotely-sensed observations from climatological and ecosystem perspectives. Current and future satellite missions offer opportunities to develop composite and multi-sensor (or multi-index) drought assessment models. While there are immense opportunities, there are major challenges including data continuity, unquantified uncertainty, sensor changes, and community acceptability. One of the major limitations of many of the currently available satellite observations is their short length of record. However, they still provide valuable information about relevant hydrologic and ecological processes linked to this natural hazard. Therefore, there is a need for models and algorithms that combine multiple data sets and/or assimilate satellite observations into model simulations to generate long-term climate data records. To address this gap, Chapter 2 introduces Standardized Drought Analysis Toolbox (SDAT), which includes a generalized framework for deriving nonparametric univariate and multivariate standardized drought indices. Current indicators suffer from deficiencies including some prior distributional assumption, temporal inconsistency, and statistical incomparability. Most drought indicators rely on a representative parametric probability distribution function that fits the data. However, a parametric distribution function may not fit the data, especially in continental/global scale studies. Particularly, when the sample size is relatively small as in the case of many satellite precipitation products. SDAT is based on a nonparametric framework that can be applied to different climatic variables including precipitation, soil moisture and relative humidity, without having to assume representative parametric distributions. The most attractive feature of the framework is that it leads to statistically consistent drought indicators based on different variables. We show that using SDAT with satellite observation leads to more reliable drought information, compared to the commonly used parametric methods. We argue that satellite observations not currently used for operational drought monitoring, such as near-surface air relative humidity data from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) mission, provide opportunities to improve early drought warning. In the third chapter of this dissertation, we outline a new drought monitoring framework for early drought onset detection using AIRS relative humidity data. The early warning and onset detection of drought is of particular importance for effective agriculture and water resource management. Previous studies show that the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI), a measure of precipitation deficit, detects drought onset earlier than other indicators. Here satellite-based near surface air relative humidity data can further improve drought onset detection and early warning. This chapter introduces the Standardized Relative Humidity Index (SRHI) based on the NASA's AIRS observations. SRHI relies on SDAT's nonparametric framework, introduced in Chapter 2. The results indicate that the SRHI typically detects the drought onset earlier than SPI. While the AIRS mission was not originally designed for drought monitoring, its relative humidity data offers a new and unique avenue for drought monitoring and early warning. Early warning aspects of SRHI may have merit for integration into current drought monitoring systems. One of the research opportunities identified in Chapter 1 is using current (and future) satellite missions to develop composite and multi-indicator drought models. In Chapter 4, we outline a framework for assessing impacts of droughts on forest health using a multi-sensor approach. This framework relies on the relationship between climate conditions (e.g., temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, Vapor Pressure Deficit) and forest health based on greenness of vegetation. Wildfires, tree mortality and forest productivity increase during drought periods. Using the proposed multi-index approach, Chapter 4 aims to investigate the effects of recent summer, dry-season and winter droughts on the forest health in western United States. We use Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) as an indicator that combines temperature and relative humidity for forest stress assessment. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is commonly used for assessing vegetation health. During summer and growing season, VPD values are generally high. The results show that the VPD and NDVI provide consistent information on forest health. In addition to VPD, we use conditional probability of NDVI in high temperature and low relative humidity percentiles over the summer and the growing season. We show that combining temperature and relative humidity using a conditional probability approach offers multi-sensor information on forest condition. During winter, on the other hand, VPD and temperature is relatively lower. NDVI distributions in winter were found to be more associated with precipitation as opposed to relative humidity and temperature. We believe the a joint indicator based on temperature and relative humidity can be considered as a link between climate condition and actual impact on the ecosystem. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Book Application of Pattern Recognition and Adaptive DSP Methods for Spatio temporal Analysis of Satellite Based Hydrological Datasets

Download or read book Application of Pattern Recognition and Adaptive DSP Methods for Spatio temporal Analysis of Satellite Based Hydrological Datasets written by Anish Chand Turlapaty and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2010-06-17 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data assimilation of satellite-based observations of hydrological variables with full numerical physics models can be used to downscale these observations from coarse to high resolution to improve microwave sensor-based soil moisture observations. Moreover, assimilation can also be used to predict related hydrological variables, e.g., precipitation products can be assimilated in a land information system to estimate soil moisture. High quality spatio-temporal observations of these processes are vital for a successful assimilation which in turn needs a detailed analysis and improvement. In this research, pattern recognition and adaptive signal processing methods are developed for the spatio-temporal analysis and enhancement of soil moisture and precipitation datasets. These methods are applied to accomplish the following tasks: (i) a consistency analysis of level-3 soil moisture data from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer - EOS (AMSR-E) against in-situ soil moisture measurements from the USDA Soil Climate Analysis Network (SCAN). This method performs a consistency assessment of the entire time series in relation to others and provides a spatial distribution of consistency levels. The methodology is based on a combination of wavelet-based feature extraction and oneclass support vector machines (SVM) classifier. Spatial distribution of consistency levels are presented as consistency maps for a region, including the states of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. These results are well correlated with the spatial distributions of average soil moisture, and the cumulative counts of dense vegetation; (ii) a modified singular spectral analysis based interpolation scheme is developed and validated on a few geophysical data products including GODAE's high resolution sea surface temperature (GHRSST). This method is later employed to fill the systematic gaps in level-3 AMSR-E soil moisture dataset; (iii) a combination of artificial neural networks and vector space transformation function is used to fuse several high resolution precipitation products (HRPP). The final merged product is statistically superior to any of the individual datasets over a seasonal period. The results have been tested against ground based measurements of rainfall over our study area and average accuracies obtained are 85% in the summer and 55% in the winter 2007.

Book Remote Sensing of Evapotranspiration ET

Download or read book Remote Sensing of Evapotranspiration ET written by Pradeep Wagle and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-10-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evapotranspiration (ET) is a critical component of the water and energy balances, and the number of remote sensing-based ET products and estimation methods has increased in recent years. Various aspects of remote sensing of ET are reported in the 11 papers published in this book. The major research areas covered by this book include inter-comparison and performance evaluation of widely used one- and two-source energy balance models, a new dual-source model (Soil Plant Atmosphere and Remote Sensing Evapotranspiration, SPARSE), and a process-based model (ETMonitor); assessment of multi-source (e.g., remote sensing, reanalysis, and land surface model) ET products; development or improvement of data fusion frameworks to predict continuous daily ET at a high spatial resolution (field-scale or 30 m) by fusing the advanced spaceborne thermal emission reflectance radiometer (ASTER), the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Landsat data; and investigating uncertainties in ET estimates using an ET ensemble composed of several land surface models and diagnostic datasets. The effects of the differences between ET products on water resources and ecosystem management were also investigated. More accurate ET estimates and improved understanding of remotely sensed ET products are crucial for maximizing crop productivity while minimizing water losses and management costs.
