Book Research with the Locus of Control Construct

Download or read book Research with the Locus of Control Construct written by Herbert M. Lefcourt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research with the Locus of Control Construct, Volume 3: Extensions and Limitations presents the extensions of use of the locus of control construct into areas far removed from the purview of the construct's originators and limitations of that usage. This book is divided into two parts. Part I describes the large number of investigations that have been conducted in each of three psychological domains—industrial psychology, psychophysiology, and cross-cultural psychology. Part II examines the question of the circumstances under which locus of control is a useful construct. This volume is recommended for psychologists and medical practitioners concerned with the locus of control contract.

Book Individual Differences and the Development of Perceived Control

Download or read book Individual Differences and the Development of Perceived Control written by Ellen A. Skinner and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the strongest predictors of children's school performance are individual differences in perceived control: those beliefs about how effective the self can be in producing desired outcomes. Drawing perspectives from both developmental and individual differences research, this longitudinal study documents the cycles in which children who develop optimal profiles of control are more actively engaged and have better academic success, (or in contrast, how children may doubt their capacities, experience lower scholastic achievement, and believe in the power of luck or unknown forces.) Further, the results show how these cycles may change with age, and suggest ways to improve children's perceived control.

Book Research with the Locus of Control Construct

Download or read book Research with the Locus of Control Construct written by Herbert M. Lefcourt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research with the Locus of Control Construct, Volume 1: Assessment Methods was created to serve two purposes. The first is to fill the researcher's need for information about the application of appropriate locus of control scales to their particular purposes or samples. It presents a variety of locus of control scales and describes the relevant research and applications. The second purpose for this book involves the general field of personality psychology. Often personality constructs emerge, occupy center stage for the better part of a decade, and then almost silently disappear from view. By contrast, the locus of control construct has occupied a central position in personality research for a decade. The contributions to this volume represent some of the innovations that extend the utility of the locus of control construct to different areas of concern. It illustrates a simple principle—that a construct continues to be viable only as long as it continues to inspire innovations; if it remains static the construct will eventually disappear. This book is intended to provide information regarding new developments and to encourage new questions and applications that may allow the locus of control construct to outlive the brief life span that is common among personality constructs. It is assumed that the reader is already familiar with the basic literature on locus of control research.

Book Self perceived Competencies and Adjustment of Children and Adolescents with Cancer

Download or read book Self perceived Competencies and Adjustment of Children and Adolescents with Cancer written by Amy Friedman-Bender and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large variability in adjustment of children with cancer indicates the importance of identifying risk and resistance factors that predict individual differences in adaptation to this life threatening disease. The purpose of this study is to investigate the predictive effects of self-perceived competencies as resistance factors for psychological adjustment problems in children and adolescents with cancer. In this study, 270 children and adolescents with cancer between the ages of 8 and 17 were recruited as part of a larger study of quality of life of pediatric cancer patients. Subjects were administered the Children's Depression Inventory and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children to measure negative affectivity. Children's perceptions of their physical appearance, athletic competence, scholastic competence, social acceptance, and self-esteem were assessed with the Harter Self-Perception Profile. Path analysis involving simultaneous multiple regression equations was utilized to test hypothesized paths among age, gender, medical status, competencies, self-esteem, and negative affectivity. Age at diagnosis, time since diagnosis, and whether a child was newly diagnosed, relapsed, in remission, or a long-term survivor were not statistically predictive of competencies, self-esteem, or negative affectivity. The results indicated that age and gender were significantly associated with physical appearance and athletic is competence such that older age and female gender were associated with lower self-perceptions in these areas. Diagnosis was significantly associated with social acceptance and athletic competence, indicating that brain tumor patients had lower self-perceptions than other solid tumor patients. All of the competency areas except athletic competence were significantly associated with self esteem. Lastly, self-esteem, physical appearance and scholastic competence were significantly associated with negative affectivity. As expected, the effects of self-perceptions of competencies on negative affectivity were mediated by self-esteem. No significant nonlinear or interaction effects were found. The results suggest that interventions designed to enhance perceptions of physical appearance, scholastic competence, and social acceptance could help improve self-esteem and reduce symptoms of negative affectivity in children with cancer. Identifying the potentially modifiable risk and resistance factors that predict the individual differences in adaptation among pediatric cancer patients may facilitate the design of enhanced treatment interventions.

Book The Correlation of Children s Perception of Locus of Control to Originality in Selected Groups of Sixth Grade Children

Download or read book The Correlation of Children s Perception of Locus of Control to Originality in Selected Groups of Sixth Grade Children written by Opal Elaine Bates and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was developed in order to determine whether substantiation for Carl Rogers' theory of originality as related to an internal locus of control could be located among groups of elementary school children. The setting was in Portland, Oregon, in three types of city schools: suburban (upper/ upper-middle class); conventional (middle/lower middle-class); and common man (lower-middle/ lower class). Two hundred and sixty-one sixth grade students took part in the study. The sample would be considered quite indicative of North-western school children of this developmental level, with the exception that the population was predominantly Caucasian. The two major purposes of the study were to investigate relationships between the psychological construct locus of control and creative originality as affected by intelligence differences, sex differences, and social class differences. Specific hypotheses were as follows: H1: The degree of originality as measured by the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) will correlate positively to the degree of internal locus of control as measured by the Bialer Locus of Control Questionnaire (BLCQ); H2: Intelligence as measured by the SCAT will correlate positively with originality as measured by the TTCT and to an internal locus of control as measured by the BLCQ; H3: There will be a significant difference shown between boys and girls in the degree of originality as measured by the TTCT and in the degree of internal locus of control as measured by the BLCQ; and H4: There will be a significant difference in the degree of originality as measured by the TTCT and in the degree of internal locus of control as measured by the BLCQ between lower class and middle class children. The 261 students were administered the TTCT, scored for originality only; the BLCQ, ranked by raw score from low to high; the SCAT, scored by Portland norms; and the Warner Index of Occupational Rank, Revised 1960, ranked 1-4 serving for middle-class designation and 5-7 serving as lower class designation. A correlation matrix of the variables was developed using IQ categorized as 1,2, 3. A second procedure used a correlation matrix with IQ placed on a continuum. Both matrices were based on Pearsonian product-moment correlations. Multiple regressions with analysis of variance utilizing the F-test (F2 253) sought to determine whether main effects contained the meaningful relationships or if there were significant interaction effects of the variables. The first correlation matrix with IQ categorized supported all four hypotheses. The second correlation matrix with IQ on a continuum showed IQ to be the main factor in any relationship among the variables. Hypothesis 1 was not supported, although the data indicated a direction towards a significant, positive relationship between locus of control and originality. Hypothesis two was supported: IQ correlated significantly with both an internal locus of control and with originality. Hypothesis three, sex differences, was supported only in direction and was rejected. Hypothesis four, social class differences, was supported only in middle-class groupings in the suburban and the conventional types of schools. Analysis of variance with the F-test showed the main effects contained the meaningful relationships between any of the tested variables. The IQ of the student was seen as the best predictor of any relationship among variables. Prediction was most consistent among upper-middle and middle-class subjects, which could be indicative of instrument bias. Verbal originality scores related more closely to SCAT and BLCQ than figural originality, perhaps due to the dependence of all three tests on verbal rather than visual media. The need for further refinement of tests seems indicated.
