Book Assessing the Impact of Environmental Amenities on Residential Location Choice

Download or read book Assessing the Impact of Environmental Amenities on Residential Location Choice written by Mitchell R. Livy and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation investigates the influence of policies involving environmental amenities on residential location decisions. We develop and implement unique econometric models focused on controlling for differences in spatial scale when estimating non-market values. These models are applied to evaluate existing and proposed policies that impact the environment in the Chesapeake Bay region. The first chapter provides new evidence of the capitalized value of local parks by estimating the impact associated with renovations of specific local park attributes on surrounding home prices. These results shed light on an empirical puzzle in the existing literature that single-family residential homeowners have a surprisingly low valuation associated with living in close proximity to local parks. Using property fixed effects models with time-varying renovations data, we disaggregate the bundle of amenities comprising local parks and find that the capitalization of renovations is heterogeneous and depends on the specific park attributes undergoing renovation.

Book Residential Location Choice

Download or read book Residential Location Choice written by Francesca Pagliara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-12 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effective planning of residential location choices is one of the great challenges of contemporary societies and requires forecasting capabilities and the consideration of complex interdependencies which can only be handled by complex computer models. This book presents a range of approaches used to model residential locations within the context of developing land-use and transport models. These approaches illustrate the range of choices that modellers have to make in order to represent residential choice behaviour. The models presented in this book represent the state-of-the-art and are valuable both as key building blocks for general urban models, and as representative examples of complexity science.

Book The Impact of Environmental Amenities on Residential Development and Decision Making

Download or read book The Impact of Environmental Amenities on Residential Development and Decision Making written by Pitchayaporn Tantihkarnchana and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following research focuses on environmental amenities and decision making. The first two chapters relate to the impact of open spaces and neighboring houses on real estate market and residential development pattern in Kittitas County, Central Washington. Kittitas County has an abundance of environmental amenities, which offers outdoor activities and attract individuals to migrate into the area. Examining individuals' value toward open spaces through property prices and analyzing the residential development pattern help the government form the policy that prevent these rural areas with open spaces from overdevelopment. The third chapter relates to decision making on the precaution level invested by the firm to prevent environmental damages and judge's decision on punitive damages punishment following the damages. By analyzing the interaction between the firm and the judge, it helps the judge choose the appropriate level of punishment in order to encourage the firm to invest in a proper precaution level.

Book The Role of Environmental Amenities in the Urban Economy

Download or read book The Role of Environmental Amenities in the Urban Economy written by Deyu Rao and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental amenities play an important role in residential location decisions, which in turn affect the concentration of consumption and production activities. In this paper, I develop and estimate a spatial general equilibrium model to examine how environmental amenities affect the spatial distribution of urban economic activities and their welfare consequences. The model characterizes household location and consumption decisions, production decisions, as well as urban agglomeration and dispersion forces. The empirical analysis leverages a natural experiment of pollution monitoring and information disclosure program and recovers key underlying parameters using fine-scale travel data on commuting and consumption trips and environmental amenities. The analysis shows that job access, residential amenities, and consumption access account for 49%, 30% and 21% of overall attractiveness of a residential location, respectively. A one-standard-deviation change in air quality leads to a 0.24-standard-deviation change in individuals' perceived amenity level. Counterfactual simulations suggest an 8.4% welfare gain if individuals were to fully incorporate environmental amenities into their decisions, compared to the scenario of not incorporating their impacts. The welfare difference is driven by changes in residential and workplace locations, as well as consumption and production decisions.

Book U S Health in International Perspective

Download or read book U S Health in International Perspective written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is among the wealthiest nations in the world, but it is far from the healthiest. Although life expectancy and survival rates in the United States have improved dramatically over the past century, Americans live shorter lives and experience more injuries and illnesses than people in other high-income countries. The U.S. health disadvantage cannot be attributed solely to the adverse health status of racial or ethnic minorities or poor people: even highly advantaged Americans are in worse health than their counterparts in other, "peer" countries. In light of the new and growing evidence about the U.S. health disadvantage, the National Institutes of Health asked the National Research Council (NRC) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to convene a panel of experts to study the issue. The Panel on Understanding Cross-National Health Differences Among High-Income Countries examined whether the U.S. health disadvantage exists across the life span, considered potential explanations, and assessed the larger implications of the findings. U.S. Health in International Perspective presents detailed evidence on the issue, explores the possible explanations for the shorter and less healthy lives of Americans than those of people in comparable countries, and recommends actions by both government and nongovernment agencies and organizations to address the U.S. health disadvantage.

Download or read book Urban Resilience written by Yoshiki Yamagata and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-10 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is on urban resilience – how to design and operate cities that can withstand major threats such as natural disasters and economic downturns and how to recover from them. It is a collection of latest research results from two separate but collaborating research groups, namely, researchers in urban design and those on general resilience theory. The book systematically deals with the core aspects of urban resilience: systems, management issues and populations. The taxonomy can be broken down into threats, systems, resilience cycles and recovery types in the context of urban resilience. It starts with a discussion of systems resilience models, focusing on the central idea that resilience is a moving average of costs (a set of trajectories in a two-player game paradigm). The second section explores management issues, including planning, operating and emergency response in cities with specific examples such as land-use planning and carbon-neutral scenarios for urban planning. The next section focuses on urban dwellers and specific people-related issues in the context of resilience. Agent-based simulation of behaviour and perception-based resilience, as well as brand crisis management are representative examples of the topics discussed. A further section examines systems like public utilities – including managing power supplies, cyber-security issues and models for pandemics. It concludes with a discussion of the future challenges and risks facing complex systems, for example in resilient power grids, making it essential reading for a wide range of researchers and policymakers.

Download or read book Combining Facts And Values In Environmental Impact Assessment written by Eric L. Hyman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988. This book has grown from a research workshop that began at the University of North Carolina under the direction of Maynard Hufschmidt. Professor Hufschmidt's long-held interest in the incorporation of environmental and other social values into benefit-cost analysis led to a research project entitled, "The Role of Environmental Indicators in Water Resource Planning and Policy Development," funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior. That project brought together the authors of this volume for a two-year period during which the groundwork for this book was laid.
